THE FERRERS CLOCKThe stable courtyard behind Staunton Hall was in a sorry statewhen my father, Alec Blunt, bought it in 1955, the roof missing inplaces and the courtyard knee-high in grass. Above the granary onthe eastern side was a large clock face, and inside a high platform, but the clock was missing. We were told that Italian prisoners, wholived in the stables during the war, had tried to repair the clock andfinished up vandalising it.
After a few years the clock face fell down in a heap of oak boards and copper sheet. We
kept it in store for some time but eventually sent the copper for scrap; these were years
of real austerity and we had found no way to use the stables. It was in 1974 that we finally
started to convert the rooms into craft workshops, and the high platform came down when
the granary became a gallery. For the next forty years the clock was forgotten.
It was the chance reading of an old account which brought the subject to mind again. The
clock, by the famous maker John Whitehurst of Derby, had been installed in 1779, the year
after his friend, the fifth Earl Ferrers, had died. The vandalised remains had been included
in the 1949 furniture sale at the hall, and bought by the curator of Leicester Museum, who
was a clock enthusiast. Wife Jacqueline and I went to see them, a sad relic stored on a shelf
in the loft above the museum. That was all that remained, but it gave us the idea of restoring
a clock to the building. We are lucky to have a wide range of skills on tap here at Staunton.
The five foot diameter dial was made in steel by our blacksmiths, and powdered coated in
traditional blue down the road at Ticknall. Multi-skilled Russell Lister made the giant
template for the Roman numerals in his Ferrers Centre workshop, and Dave, our house manager, applied the gold leaf. Finally our maintenance team
hoisted the dial up and fixed it in the original place, with the hole through the wall for the shaft to the clock hands.
It remained to fit the hands and connect to an electric mechanism mounted on the gallery wall. This clever machine automatically adjusts for British
Summer Time, and restarts twelve hours later if there is a power cut. It is made in Italy. Who knows, it could be made by the grandson of the prisoner
who wrecked the original more than seventy five years ago. John Blunt

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) ANXIETY: TALKING AND REASSURING YOUR CHILDRENBy Hollie Jordan, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist
Infectious disease outbreaks like the current
Coronavirus outbreak, can affect our mental health.
People who may respond more strongly to the stress
of a crisis include children.
Let’s put it in perspective. However serious a threat coronavirus
poses, it’s important to retain perspective. More people die of
tuberculosis each day – and of air pollution every five hours – than
have succumbed in two months of Covid-19! Still worried? Try this:
the vast majority of people who have contracted the illness have
recovered; children seem to be largely untouched; a vaccine is in
the pipeline meaning science are all over it; we know where it came
from and situations in that country are improving and clinical trials
are under way. I am not trying to minimise what has happened or
try to predict the future but there is no point in succumbing to
a fear; hoarding and panic buying pandemic before a disease
pandemic has even taken place!
News of the outbreak is everywhere from the newspapers to the
school playground. Many parents are wondering how to bring it up
to their children or answer questions without causing them to panic
or make them feel worse.
Here is some advice on how to discuss the coronavirus with your
children:
• Don’t be afraid to talk about it. Most children will have
already heard about the virus or seen people wearing face masks,
so parents shouldn’t avoid talking about it. Not talking about
something can actually make kids worry more. Help your children
feel informed and get fact-based information that is likely more
reassuring than whatever they’re hearing from their friends or on
the news.
• Be developmentally appropriate. Don’t volunteer too much
information, as this may be overwhelming. Answer your child’s
questions honestly and clearly. Don’t worry if you can’t answer
everything; being available to your child is what matters.
• Deal with your own anxiety. If you notice that you are feeling
anxious, take some time to calm down before trying to have a
conversation or answer your child’s questions.
• Be reassuring. Children are very egocentric, so hearing about the
coronavirus on the news may be enough to make them seriously
worry that they’ll catch it. It’s helpful to reassure your child about
how rare the coronavirus actually is and that kids actually seem to
be less susceptible to it.
• Focus on what you’re doing to stay safe. Kids feel empowered
when they know what to do to keep themselves safe. We know
that the coronavirus is transmitted mostly by coughing and touching
surfaces. So remind kids that they are taking care of themselves by
washing their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds (or the
length of two “Happy Birthday” songs) when they come in from
outside, before they eat, and after blowing their nose, coughing,
sneezing or going to the toilet.
• Stick to routine. Children do not like uncertainty so sticking to
their routines will be very helpful.
• Keep talking. Tell kids that you will continue to keep them
updated as you learn more so that they know that the lines of
communication are going to be open.

CHAR I TY CHAMP IONSTHE PRIDE OF THE COMMUNITYThis month Ashby and Coalville Lions are delighted to have been offered a donation fromAlex Stanley, landlady at The Lamb on Market Street, Ashby. Alex has been running TheLamb for only nine months, but has already won the ‘Community Hero 2020’ Award fromthe Craft Union Pub Company who own the pub.
Customers had to nominate their pub for this award and Alex had to choose a local charity to receive the prize money. Thank you for choosing us,
Alex! She particularly wants the money to be used for children and our annual event at which we entertain hundreds of children with special needs
for a morning at Ashby Statutes, will be a very worthy recipient. Many Special Schools who love to attend each year are now finding the transport
costs prohibitive, so the money will enable them to come and enjoy the morning plus all the treats that go with the experience of the rides – goodies
such as candy floss, fruit, crisps and drinks. Thanks must go, as well, to customers at The Lamb, who
have boosted the prize money with extra donations. We are truly grateful. The Marlene Reid Centre in
Coalville runs a fleet of Community Transport vehicles and currently needs to buy a new vehicle to replace
a minibus which failed its safety checks and MOT at the end of last year. The Lions have donated £500
towards their appeal for a Peugeot Independence 7-seater adaptable vehicle, which will enable them to
take out a few passengers at the same time as a wheelchair user. The Marlene Reid Centre Social Car
Scheme can take over 60s, retired people to hospital, doctors’, opticians’ and dentists’ appointments.
Elderly, frail or disabled people (including those in wheelchairs) in NW Leicestershire can use The
Community Minibus ‘Dial A Ride’ Scheme to get to the town centre or supermarket. There are also
weekly trips out for the elderly who would not otherwise be able to go out.

We are donating £250 to Canine Partners in Osgathorpe, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary. The new kennel
block, opening on 16th April, will allow the charity to breed their own dogs. These amazing dogs dramatically change
the lives of disabled people who are lucky enough to get one, and their stories are inspirational. You may have seen
our members collecting for Marie Curie at Morrisons in March. We offer our time to collect for various worthwhile
causes such as this. Look out for our Easter Egg raffles in many pubs throughout Ashby, Coalville and surrounding
villages, and do please support us in this way!
Remember you can find us on Facebook. And as always, if you would like to help yourlocal community by giving some of your spare time, or you wish to donate, please getin touch: [email protected] • 07735 407637

New classrooms for youngest pupilsat Dixie Grammar Junior SchoolThe Dixie Grammar School is delighted to share news of its latestbuilding project and investment in the future.
From September 2020, those joining the school’s Reception Year will enjoy first-class facilities in
a brand new, modern and eco-friendly classroom block. The purpose-built development will boast
large classrooms, kitchen and wet areas and will open onto an outdoor learning space overlooking
the farms and fields surrounding the school. Head Teacher, Mrs Emma Billington, commented,
“We are so lucky with the location of our school and this new development will really help our youngest
pupils to get maximum benefit from our natural surroundings. Our teachers are raring to go and I’m
very excited that pupils will experience the best teaching in the best environment, setting them up to
enjoy and to achieve highly in the first year of their school careers. We are always looking to improve
what we offer and, following on from upgrading our sports facilities and the new Sarah Ennis Music
Room, it is wonderful to continue this programme with such an impressive project.”
The new building will be integrated into the school’s current site and the company, Green Modular,
has been selected for its commitment to strong visual appeal, high quality finish and its use of
sustainable and environmentally-responsible materials in its construction.
ASHBY CASTLE
AND ITS TUNNELSIt was pitch back and deathly quiet. Only a trickling sound ofsomething liquid could be heard. “What day is it?” I asked. Oneof the dozen or so students behind me answered: “It’s Friday,Sir.” “Oh no; I shouldn’t have brought you down here. Once a
month, on a Friday, the blood drains from the coffins in the crypt
below the Chapel and it runs across the floor of this tunnel…”
Shrieks followed (mainly from the boys), as they tried to escape. Then I switched on the torch – it was water.
Those were the days before the dreaded Health & Safety measures lit up the
passageway into its present boring state. Rediscovered in the mid-nineteenth century,
the tunnel – which connects the Hastings Tower with the Kitchen – had its original brick
walls repaired and its vaulted roof rebuilt in 1906/1907. It was probably constructed
early in the Civil War; a Parliamentary posting described the castle’s Royalist garrison
as ‘very strong and their works good, they have vaults under the ground, through which
they can go from one fort to another at their pleasure…’
Of greater interest is evidence of at least one more, much longer tunnel leading from
the same kitchen cellar to the Mount House on Leicester Road – some 250 yards away.
Nicknamed the Irish Fort, due to the many Irish quartered there who had ‘lately made
a new fort’, the stone, triangular building is now part of a private house. The tunnel,
described as ‘in some places having fallen in’ (1824), whose entrance had ‘a flight of
steps descending into the gloomy avenue’ (1852), was marked out thanks to a water
dowser and geophys (magnetic gradiometer systems) equipment in the late 1980s.
When the Grammar School Sports Hall was built soon afterwards, the line could also
be made out by the different colour of the soil as the JCB removed the turf. Probably
quite deep as it traversed the inner courtyard, it was a ‘cut and cover’ passageway
across the field to the outlying fort. The dowser also traced yet another underground
channel across the Manor House lawn to the crypt of St. Helen’s church. Another
tunnel? It makes sense, as the church tower overlooks the northern curtain wall of the castle and would need to be guarded from an enemy.
There may be yet more – to Market Street or Nottingham Road. Unlikely, one feels. Certainly not, as alleged by one student, to the United
Biscuits factory on Smisby Road.
Kenneth Hillier (Ashby Museum)

Ashby Civic Society was enthralled by our Speaker Julie Ede thismonth who regaled us with little known details of Edith Piaf’sremarkable life. Edith was nick named ‘The Little Sparrow’ dueto her slight stature and distinctive singing voice.
Edith’s whole life was turbulent to say the least. Her mother was a Paris street singer and
Edith was literally born in a Paris gutter. She was nurtured on cheap wine and had to be
weaned off it at the age of four. After a few years of living with distant family, she and her
contortionist father joined the circus. Edith’s amazing voice and performance was soon
recognised and led to a life of night clubs and Shows. Throughout her life she craved the
love and attention of her devoted fans but the need for excitement and essential red wine
led to an irregular life style and a constant change of lovers. She continued to be a huge
success in Europe and America from the 1930’s to the 1960’s when she died at an early
age but her famous songs are still recognised today.
As well as an entertaining Speaker, our members heard about the latest news regarding
the Royal Hotel and the reason for the white containers in the car park. Other issues
concerning Ashby were discussed, with questions put to committee members about
Planning and infrastructure news.

oline House,
We didn't have towait 'in vain' forfunny captions to
last month's photo!Well, what can we say! Lastmonth's 'nutty' little captioncompetition certainly broughtout the best and the 'worst' ofour reader’s sense of humour!Given the elements in thephotograph (a weathervanewith a large cockerel on thetop, a feeder for dispensingnuts to birds and a furry littlesquirrel, with a quizzicalexpression on it's face!) itwasn't really surprising!
This innocent little photo, kindly supplied
by one of our readers, certainly made us
smile here in the office and we thought
up some captions ourselves; some of
which would not have been suitable for
printing! Having decided to open it up to
our readers, it seems that many of you
also share our typical British 'saucy
postcard' sense of humour too! Thank
you to everyone who took the time to
send in their suggestions.
They certainly gave us a giggle. Here are
a few that we COULD print.....
''Can you point me in the right
direction to get the Brazil Nuts,
please?''
''I must be nuts waiting around 'in vain',
because a cock doesn't lay eggs!''
''Someone told me there were
chestnuts roasting ...something about
an open fire? I may be a few months
late, but I was wondering if you had any
left...?''
As laughter is good medicine, we will
have to try this again sometime. Any
photos, anyone?

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author
and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow
a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…
As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined,
italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.
For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk
Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories
®
Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 9 letters.
The answer is on the inside back cover.
For further information about Ruffle’s story books and other
adventures visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk or watch the new series
of short films on YouTube under ‘Ruffle’s Walks’.
After an exciting day at the playgroup
the toy Ruffle had been taken home by a
different child. He was now lying under the
bed of her older sister who had decided
that she would like to play with Ruffle! The
older sister knelt down and reached Under
the bed, her fingers gripping onto Ruffle’s
fur as they touched him. She decided to
take Ruffle into the garden along with a
large white handkerchief and some string.
She took Ruffle over to the wooden bench
in the garden and started to tie a piece of
string to each corner of the Handkerchief.
Once she had checked that the string
was firmly attached, she then tied the
other end of each piece to one of Ruffle’s
legs. She concentrated hard to ensure the
string was tight around the brown fur.
‘There you go little dog,’ she told Ruffle as
she picked him up to examine her work.
‘You’re going to be able to fly into the sky
then float down with your Parachute!’
She folded the white handkerchief
carefully against Ruffle then stood in the
middle of the garden. After counting to
three she threw Ruffle and the attached
handkerchief as high as she could into the
sky. Ruffle’s legs went Round and round
as his body twisted in the air. He seemed
to hang for a brief moment before starting
his drop back down to earth. The girl
watched with delight as the wind caught
the handkerchief which billowed out to
slow Ruffle’s descent, guiding him to a
gentle landing on the grass.
The girl laughed As she skipped over
to where Ruffle and the parachute lay.
Once again she folded the parachute
handkerchief carefully against Ruffle
before throwing him as high as she could
into the sky. The parachute was securely
fastened and brought Ruffle safely down
again. The girl was very pleased with her
invention and eager to try to throw Ruffle
even higher. But her stronger throw was
Caught by a gust of wind which took the
parachute and Ruffle over the garden
fence into a wooded area behind the
garden. The parachute brought Ruffle to
rest in the overgrown grass the other side
of the fence.
Annoyed that Ruffle had flown out of
reach, the girl dragged a garden chair over
to the fence. Standing on Tiptoe upon
the chair and holding onto the top of the
fence to look over, she spotted the white
handkerchief partially covering Ruffle.
Hmm - she would have to wait until the
following day for her older brother to help
her rescue Ruffle and the parachute. She
climbed down from the chair and returned
inside having no choice but to leave him
there for the time being.
But Ruffle hadn’t been lying there for
long before a large bird spotted him and
swooped down, attracted by Ruffle’s
shiny bead Eye. The bird grabbed hold
of Ruffle in his claws and tried to carry
him. But Ruffle was still attached to the
parachute which kept opening as the wind
caught it so the bird was only Able to fly a
short distance before letting go of Ruffle.
As though well trained, the handkerchief
opened one more time and Ruffle floated
down, this time landing next to a large
lake.
What would happen next?
Ruffle: a toy’s adventuresA bumpy ride!

Full S.T.E.A.M. ahead for Ivanhoe College studentsOn Wednesday 4th March, Ivanhoe College hosted their fourth annual S.T.E.A.M. Show event. This year’sevent was even bigger and more successful than before with the school having secured significant sponsorshipfrom a number of local businesses, allowing them to recognise the huge achievements of all of the participantsas well as giving generous prizes to the award winners.
The S.T.E.A.M. Show gives the students, aged 11-14, the opportunity to showcase their ingenuity, creativity and technical skills in Science, Technology,
Engineering (including computing), Design(Art)s and Maths. Working in teams, or individually, students are in complete control of their projects: from
the choice of topic, through to how they tackle the workload. Some students undertake research to further their knowledge, others conduct exper-
iments to prove a hypothesis, many students will produce prototype products; there really is no limit to what they can do. We are proud to be able
to say that the event is also completely inclusive, offering additional support where needed to help disadvantaged students and students with special
educational needs meet their full potential. On the day of the show 49 students presented their project to a panel of judges.
Ivanhoe College were delighted to welcome business representatives from Rolls Royce, 3M,
Marstons Brewery, Schneider Electrics, B.S.I., Leicestershire Police and Stephenson College. In ad-
dition representatives from Ashby Town Council; Chairman Councillor John Bridges and Mayor Gra-
ham Allman. It is such a pleasure to be able to showcase our students in this way and offer a unique
opportunity for the visitors to speak first hand with the students and be inspired by our young people.
This year, thanks to the sponsorship of Ashfield Cares, B.S.I., and the North West Leicestershire
Safety Partnership, we were able to give Amazon vouchers and trophies to the prize winners and in
addition all the students were presented with an Ivanhoe S.T.E.A.M. branded lapel pin to wear on
their school blazers. In addition Marstons Brewery, Tesco, Stephensons College and 3M provided
vouchers and merchandise as additional prizes. The 'Best in Show' Award was sponsored by Rolls
Royce for the third year running and was presented by Christian and Amy from Rolls Royce. The
Rolls Royce Award for Best in Show went to Jack Kent and Jack Wheeler who created an astonishing prototype of a domestic generator that could
harness the water power of showers, taps and guttering to create electricity in the home. Councillor John Bridges was very impressed by the winning
team. He said,“I have spoken to the lads and their families and I have passed my contact details on to them. I want to make some introductions to some
companies as this is exactly the sort of technology we are wanting to introduce to new homes in the area. I’m excited to see where this can go.” Congratulations
to all of the winners. Ivanhoe would like to again thank all the businesses who have supported us and to the families and teachers of our students who
have encouraged them to follow their interests.
If any other local businesses would like to visit our show next year, please email:[email protected]

Restoration Piece!
MGA Roadster manufactured from 1955 -1962also in coupe form as well.
Early ones had a 1500cc engine with drum brakes, later increased
to 1600cc with front disk brakes. Also a twin cam version was made.
Two thirds where exported mainly to America. Mine is a 1956
1500cc imported back from America in 2012 and underwent a full
nut and bolt restoration by myself taking 3½ years including
converting to right-hand drive. Well worth it on hot sunny days with
the top down.
If you look closely at the car you will see there are no external door handles or door locks. Gone are the days when you didn’t need to have
car security. P.S. Food for thought, when this car was made there were NO motorways in the UK.
