2. School teaches us a lot. Obviously. But when it comes to writing for business, the rules were taught can often hinder rather than help. 3. In many ways, academic writing doesnt prepare us for writing content for business in any way at all. With that in mind, here are 5 things that we couldve done with knowing earlier 4. 1. The world is changing. 5. Our attention spans are shorter than ever. At school were encouraged to write as much as possible. In business, you need to keep your copy as short as possible. 6. 2. Less is more. 7. On a similar note, less is more when it comes to the type of words you use too. When youre writing for business, youre not gunning for literacy awards or trying to impress anyone. 8. Use normal, everyday language. Why take the chance of a prospective customer not understanding what youve got to say? 9. 3. Write with design in mind. 10. Make sure that whatever youre writing fits well within the design. So regardless of whether youre writing words for a website, poster or business card, make sure the content looks as good as it reads. 11. 4. Know your audience. 12. Know who youre writing for and tailor your copy accordingly. Dont use stuffy words if youre audience is mainly pub-goers. Likewise, dont be too pally if you need to be professional. 13. 5. Be flexible. 14. At school were told never to start sentences with and or but. Were told that all articles need a beginning, a middle and an end. And so on 15. Sticking to the rules wont get you noticed. Besides, theres nothing wrong with doing things differently. Sometimes, effective copywriting is about breaking the rules. 16. Just make sure theres a strategy behind what you do. 17. Splash Copywriters are experienced, creative copywriters who have written for some of the UKs biggest brands. 18.
