CRMs can be used to create, assign and manage requests made by customers, such ascall centersoftware which help direct customers to agents.[2]CRM software can also be used to identify andreward loyal customers.

    Appointments

Appointment CRMs automatically provide suitable appointment times to customers via e-mail orthe web, which are then synchronized with the representative or agent's calendar.[citation needed]

    Small business

Forsmall businessesa CRM may simply consist of a contact manager system which integratesemails, documents, jobs, faxes, and scheduling for individual accounts. [

citation needed] CRMsavailable for specific markets for professional markets (legal, finance) are frequently touted fortheir event management and relationship tracking opposed to financial return on investment(ROI).

    Social media

Some CRMs coordinate withsocial mediasites likeTwitter,LinkedIn,FacebookandGooglePlusto track and communicate with customers who share opinions and experiences about theircompany, products and services.[3]

    Non-profit and membership-based

Systems for non-profit and membership-based organizations help track constituents, fund-raising, demographics, membership levels, membership directories, volunteering and

    communications with individuals.[citation needed]

    Adoption Issues

In 2003, a Gartner report estimated that more than $1 billion had been spent on software that wasnot being used. According to CSO Insights, less than 40 percent of 1,275 participating companieshad end-user adoption rates above 90 percent.[4]Many corporations only use CRM systems on apartial or fragmented basis.[5][citation needed] In a 2007 survey from theUK, four-fifths of seniorexecutives reported that their biggest challenge is getting their staff to use the systems they hadinstalled. 43 percent of respondents said they use less than half the functionality of their existing

    system.

    [6][citation needed]

    Market Leaders

The CRM market grew by 12.5 percent in 2008, from revenue of $8.13 billion in 2007 to $9.15billion in 2008.[7]The following table lists the top vendors in 20062008 (figures in millions ofUS dollars) published inGartnerstudies.[8][9]

    Trends

Many CRM vendors offer subscription-based web tools (cloud computing) andsoftware as a

service(SaaS)). Some CRM systems are equipped with mobile capabilities, making informationaccessible to remote sales staff.[citation needed]Salesforce.comwas the first company to provideenterprise applications through a web browser, and has maintained its leadership position.[10][11]Traditional providers have recently moved into the cloud-based market via acquisitions ofsmaller providers:OraclepurchasedRightNowin October 2011[12]andSAPacquiredSuccessFactorsin December 2011.[13]

The era of the "social customer"[14]refers to the use of social media (Twitter,Facebook,LinkedIn,Yelp, customer reviews inAmazon, etc.) by customers. CRM philosophy and strategyhas shifted to encompass social networks and user communities.

Another related development isvendor relationship management, or VRM which provide toolsand services for customers to independently manage their relationship with vendors. VRMdevelopment has grown out of efforts by ProjectVRM at Harvard'sBerkman Center for Internet& SocietyandIdentity Commons' Internet Identity Workshops, as well as by a growing numberof startups and established companies. VRM was the subject of a cover story in the May 2010issue ofCRMMagazine.[15]

In 2001 Doug Laney developed the concept and coined the term 'Extended RelationshipManagement'(XRM).[16]Laney defines XRM as extending CRM disciplines to secondary alliessuch as government, press, and industry consortia.

CRM futurist Dennison DeGregor describes a shift from 'push CRM' toward a 'customertransparency' (CT) model, due to the increased proliferation of channels, devices, and socialmedia.[17]

WYSIWYG implies auser interfacethat allows the user to view something very similar to theend result while the document is being created. In general WYSIWYG implies the ability todirectly manipulate thelayoutof a document without having to type or remember names oflayout commands.[3]The actual meaning depends on the user's perspective, e.g.

Inpresentation programs, compound documentsandweb pages, WYSIWYG means the displayprecisely represents the appearance of the page displayed to the end-user, but does not

necessarily reflect how the page will be printed unless the printer is specifically matched to the

editing program, as it was with theXerox Starand early versions of theApple Macintosh.

In word processing anddesktop publishingapplications, WYSIWYG means that the displaysimulates the appearance and represents the effect of fonts and line breaks on the final

pagination using a specificprinter configuration, so that, for example, a citation on page 1 of a

500-page document can accurately refer to a reference three hundred pages later.[4]

WYSIWYG also describes ways to manipulate 3D models instereo-chemistry,computer-aideddesign, and3D computer graphics.

The program on the left uses a WYSIWYG editor to produce aLorem Ipsumdocument. The program on

the right containsLaTeXcode, which when compiled will produce a document that will look very similar

to the document on the left. Compilation of formatting code is not a WYSIWYG process.

Modern software does a good job of optimizing the screen display for a particular type of output.

For example, aword processoris optimized for output to a typical printer. The software oftenemulates the resolution of the printer in order to get as close as possible to WYSIWYG.However, that is not the main attraction of WYSIWYG, which is the ability of the user to be ableto visualize what he or she is producing.

In many situations, the subtle differences between what the user sees and what the user gets areunimportant. In fact, applications may offer multiple WYSIWYG modes with different levels of"realism", including

A composition mode, in which the user sees something somewhat similar to the end result, butwith additional information useful while composing, such as section breaks and non-printing

characters, and uses a layout that is more conducive to composing than to layout. A layout mode, in which the user sees something very similar to the end result, but with some

additional information useful in ensuring that elements are properly aligned and spaced, such as

    margin lines.

A preview mode, in which the application attempts to present a representation that is as closeto the final result as possible.

    Historical notes

Compound document displayed onXerox 8010 Starsystem

Before the adoption of WYSIWYG techniques, text appeared in editors using the systemstandardtypefaceand style with little indication of layout (margins, spacing etc.). Users wererequired to enter special non-printing control codes (now referred to as markup code tags) toindicate that some text should be inboldface, italics, or a differenttypefaceor size.

These applications typically used an arbitrarymarkup languageto define the codes/tags. Eachprogram had its own special way to format a document, and it was a difficult and timeconsuming process to change from one word processor to another.

The use of markup tags and codes remains popular today in some applications due to their ability

to store complex formatting information. When the tags are made visible in the editor, however, they occupy space in the unformatted text and so disrupt the desired layout and flow.

Bravo, a document preparation program for theAltoproduced atXerox PARCbyButlerLampson,Charles Simonyiand colleagues in 1974, is generally considered the first program toincorporate WYSIWYG technology, displaying text with formatting (e.g. with justification, fonts, and proportional spacing of characters). The Alto monitor (72pixels per inch) wasdesigned so that one full page of text could be seen and then printed on the firstlaser printers. When the text was laid out on the screen 72 PPI font metric files were used, but when printed300 PPI files were usedthus one would occasionally find characters and words slightly off, aproblem that continues to this day. (72 PPI came from a new measure of 72 "PostScript points"

per inch. Prior to this, the standard measure of 72.27 points per inch was used in typeface design, graphic design, typesetting and printing.)

Bravo was never released commercially, but the software eventually included in theXerox Starcan be seen as a direct descendant of it.[5]

In parallel with but independent of the work at Xerox PARC,Hewlett Packarddeveloped andreleased in late 1978 the first commercial WYSIWYG software application for producingoverhead slides or what today are called presentation graphics. The first release, namedBRUNO(after an HP sales training puppet), ran on theHP 1000minicomputer taking advantage of HP'sfirst bitmapped computer terminal theHP 2640.BRUNOwas then ported to the HP-3000 and re-

    released as "HP Draw".

In the 1970s and early 1980s, most popularhome computerslacked the sophisticated graphicscapabilities necessary to display WYSIWYG documents, meaning that such applications wereusually confined to limited-purpose, high-end workstations (such as theIBM DisplaywriterSystem) that were too expensive for the general public to afford. Towards the mid 1980s,however, things began to change. Improving technology allowed the production of cheaperbitmapped displays, and WYSIWYG software started to appear for more popular computers, including LisaWritefor theApple Lisa, released in 1983, andMacWritefor theAppleMacintosh, released in 1984.

TheApple Macintoshsystem was originally designed so that thescreen resolutionand theresolution of theImageWriterdot-matrix printerssold by Apple were easily scaled: 72PPIforthe screen and 144DPIfor the printers. Thus, the scale and dimensions of the on-screen displayin programs such asMacWriteandMacPaintwere easily translated to the printed outputif thepaper were held up to the screen, the printed image would be the same size as the on screenimage, but at a higher resolution. As the ImageWriter was the only model of printer physicallycompatible with the Macintosh printer port, this created an effective, closed system. to achieve 72dpi. These resolutions often differed from the VGA-standard resolutions commonin the PC world at the time. Thus, while a Macintosh 14" monitor had the same 640x480resolution as a PC, a 16" screen would be fixed at 832x624 rather than the 800x600 resolutionused by PCs. With the introduction of third-party dot-matrix printers as well aslaser printersandmultisyncmonitors, resolutions deviated from even multiples of the screen resolution, making

    true WYSIWYG harder to achieve.

    Etymology

The phrase was coined in 1982[6]by Larry Sinclair, an engineer at Triple I (InformationInternational, Inc.), to express the idea that what the user sees on the screen is what the user getson the printer while using the "page layout system", a pre-press typesetting system first shown atANPS in Las Vegas.[

    when?]

The phrase was popularised by a newsletter published by Arlene and Jose Ramos, calledWYSIWYG. It was created for the emerging Pre-Press industry going electronic in the late

1970s. After three years of publishing, the newsletter was sold to employees at the StanfordResearch Institute in California.

The phrase "What you see is what you get", from which the acronym derives, was acatchphrasepopularized byFlip Wilson's drag persona "Geraldine" (fromRowan & Martin's Laugh-Inin thelate 1960s and then onThe Flip Wilson Showuntil 1974). Geraldine would often say it to excuseher quirky behavior. Jon Seybold and researchers atPARCwere simply reappropriating thepopular cultural reference.[7][8]

    Problems of implementation

Because designers of WYSIWYG applications typically have to account for a variety of differentoutput devices, each of which has different capabilities, there are a number of problems that mustbe solved in each implementation. These can be seen as tradeoffs between multiple design goals, and hence applications that use different solutions may be suitable for different purposes.

Typically, the design goals of a WYSIWYG application may include the following:

Provide high-quality printed output on a particular printer Provide high-quality printed output on a variety of printers Provide high-quality on-screen output Allow the user to visualize what the document will look like when printed

It is not usually possible to achieve all of these goals at once.

The major problem to be overcome is that of varying output resolution. As of 2007, monitorstypically have a resolution of between 92 and 125 pixels per inch. Printers generally haveresolutions between 240 and 1440 pixels per inch; in some printers the horizontal resolution isdifferent from the vertical. This becomes a problem when trying to lay out text; because olderoutput technologies require the spacing between characters to be a whole number of pixels,

rounding errors will cause the same text to require different amounts of space in differentresolutions.

Solutions to this include the following:

Always laying out the text using a resolution higher than the user is likely to use in practice. Thiscan result in poor quality output for lower resolution devices (although techniques such as

spatial anti-aliasingmay help mitigate this), but provides a fixed layout, allowing easy user

visualisation. This is the method used byAdobe Acrobat.

Laying out the text at the resolution of the printer on which the document will be printed. Thiscan result in low quality on-screen output, and the layout may sometimes change if the

document is printed on a different printer (although this problem occurs less frequently with

higher resolution printers, as rounding errors are smaller). This is the method used byMicrosoft

    Word.

Laying out the text at the resolution of a specific printer (in most cases the default one) onwhich the document will be printed using the same font information and kerning. The character

positions and number of characters in a line are exactly similar to the printed document.

Laying out the text at the resolution for the output device to which it will be sent. This oftenresults in changes in layout between the on-screen display and printed output, so is rarely used.

It is common in web page designing tools that claim to be WYSIWYG, however.

Other problems that have been faced in the past include differences in the fonts used by theprinter and the on-screen display (largely solved by the use of downloadable font technologies

likeTrueType) and differences in color profiles between devices (mostly solved by printerdrivers with good color model conversion software).

Many variations are used only to illustrate a point or make a joke, and have very limited real use. Some that have been proposed include the following:

WYGIWYS, what you get is what you see, used in computing to describe an interaction paradigmin results-oriented user interface. The term was used byJakob Nielsento describeMicrosoft

    Office 2007's "Ribbon" interface[11]

WYSIWYN, what you see is what you needrelates to Software, which is not composed throughthe interconnection of modules, but work with such a detailed user and rights management,

that users can see only what they really need.

WYSYHYG, what you see you hope you get(/wzih/), a term ridiculingtext modewordprocessingsoftware; used in theMicrosoft Windowsvideo collection, a video distributed around

1991 on twoVHScassettes at promotional events.

WYSIWYS,what you see is what you sign, an important requirement for digital signaturesoftware. It means that the software has to be able to show the user the content without any

hidden content before the user signs it.

WYSIWYD, what you see is what you deserve refers to the ability of the user and - of course - hiseffort to create something worthwhile.

WYSIWYW, what you see is what you want, used to describeGNU TeXmacsediting platform.[12]The abbreviation clarifies that unlike in WYSIWYG editors, the user is able to customize

WYSIWYW platforms to partly act as manual typesetting programs such asTeXortroff.

YAFIYGI, you asked for it you got it, used to describe a text-command oriented document editingsystem that does not include WYSIWYG, in reference to the fact that users of such systems often

ask for something they did not really want. It is considered to be the opposite of WYSIWYG.[13]

The phrase was first used in this context in 1983 in the essayReal Programmers Don't Use Pascal

to describe theTECOtext editor system, and began to be abbreviated circa 1993.[14][15][16]

WISIWIT, what I see is what I type, also used to describe text-oriented editing systems in theopposite sense of WYSIWYG.

For years now, Ive done freelance writing for newspapers and magazines as a way to make sideincome, supplementing my full-time job. But this year, Ive made the conscious move tofreelancing for blogs instead of print publications, to the point where I now make about $2,000 amonth as a blog writer (not including my own blogs income or my full-time salary).

Becoming a freelance blog writer isnt always easy in the beginning, but Ive found that its

vastly more fun and rewarding. Its worth the effort.

First, lets talk about what its like to be a freelance blog writer. To write a good post, youve got

to do some research first, and add to that the writing time, and it can take between 90 minutes to3 hours to write your best stuff. I can generally research and write a good post in 90 minutes ifIve given it a little thought first (I do my thinking while exercising, driving, showering, etc.). Soif you plan to do some freelancing, be sure youve got the extra time. I write between 6-7 free-lance posts a week (in addition to the 7-10 I do for my own blog), so thats about 9-10 hours ofwork on top of your regular job.

But the cool thing about freelance blog writing is that you can do it from any place, any

time of day. So you can write late at night, during your lunch hour, or in the early morninghours. You can do it while traveling, or while s itting through a boring conference. Theres afreedom to it thats very appealing.

So how do you go about becoming a freelance blog writer? Here are some of my best tips:

Dont quit your day job.Even if youd like to become a full-time free-lance writer andeventually quit your job, dont do it just yet. Test the waters and sharpen your skills before you

do anything drastic. I suggest free-lance blogging on the side for at least a few months (if yourealready an experienced writer) and for 6 months or more if youre completely new to the game.Get good at what you do, develop a relationship with blogs that pay, and get a feel for the

    workflow necessary.

Create a blog. The first step to freelance blog writing is to create a blog of your own. This willserve as a showcase of your writing, and a way for you to practice your skills. Blog writing isntthe same as writing for printnot exactly anyway. Many of the same rules apply, but you needto get a good feel for the medium before you ask people to pay you for it. Dont just write anyold thing on your blogwrite high-quality articles that would serve as excellent samples to anypotential employers.

Get noticed. No one will read your blog at first. Dont expect the traffic to come immediately. But write great articles with great headlines, submit some of them tosocial mediasuch as Digg

and Netscape, and you might get a few hits. If you get some popular articles, you could get someregular readers. Once youve got some subscribers (a couple hundred would be awesome), dontsubmit your stuff to the social medialet your readers do it for you. And they will, if the articleis worthy. If its not worthy, you dont want to submit it anyway. The effect of a popular articleor more accurately, a few popular articlesis big, in terms of becoming a freelancer. It getsyou noticed by other blogs, and theyre your real market.

Guest blog. Another great way to get noticed. Write to a bigger blogger and offer to do a guestpost. Suggest a great idea for a guest post, one that will do well for the blogger. Include links tosome of your best posts as a writing sample. If you write to 10 good blogs (start with themedium-sized blogs at first, not the ones in the Technorati Top 100), you might get 1-2 say yes.

If so, rejoice! Now write an awesome post for them, with a link back to your blog at the end. Doa few of these, and youll get a wider audience for your own blog, and even better, youll beginto get noticed more. And thats how you begin to brand yourself as a good writer.

Write to good blogs.Once youve developed a brand for yourself, and gotten yourself noticed, and developed a good sample of writing on your own blog and elsewhere, take the plunge andwrite to some of the bigger blogs. The ones with some money, because the smaller ones (writtenby one person) cant pay you. Send a polite email, asking if they have any openings for freelancewriters. Tell them a little about yourself (be very brief), include a link to your blog and a coupleof your best articles. Offer to write just one article as a trial run. Write to 10 good blogs and seeif you get any response.

Look on freelance job boards. FreelanceSwitch.com has a job board, and a number of otherblogs have good job boards too. Keep your eye open for blogs looking for writers, especially in aniche that youre knowledgeable about. Feel free to post yourself as a writer looking for work, with a link back to your blog. Apply for a bunch of jobs, just to see what they have to offer.

Know your worth. Have a target per-hour rate that youd like to charge. And charge a littlebelow that when you first start, just to get your foot in the door. Once youve been writing a little

while (a few weeks) at the lower rate, only take jobs at your higher rate after that.

Give your best. If you do get a freelance writing gig with a blog, or a trial post or two, be sure to

submit y our very, very best stuff. Only submit a post that has a chance of doing extremely wellon Digg or Delicious. A mediocre post doesnt help the blog youre writing for, and certainlydoesnt help you.

Meet your deadlines. This is an obvious one, but if you constantly miss deadlines, you willappear unprofessional. If Im an editor with the choice of hiring one good writer who meetsdeadlines and another good writer who misses them, guess who Im going with. And yourreputation is all you have to go on.

Know your topic. Its best to write about stuff you know. If you know nothing about a topic, you will probably look dumb. If you only know a little about a topic, research it like crazy until

you know a ton. Writing about topics youre already very familiar with will save you a lot oftime, and will probably be a much better read.

Professional details. As a professional blog writer, be sure to insist on a contract, and know theother details of a job before you start: the payment rate, when and how theyll pay you, thedesired length of the post, what format it should be submitted in, whether images or other mediaare required, the exact deadline, how to submit it, etc.

Note: A few times a month we revisit some of our readers favorite posts from throughout the

How are you at taking initiative on tasks?

Take Initiative at Work, Take Success Home

What does it mean to take initiative? Why does initiative matter in the workplace?

Simply put, to take initiative is to do what needs to be done without having to be told. Yet,on the job, there is more to it.

    Individuals with initiative:

Are MotivatedThese people, like you, want to make something out of themselves. They wantmore than a job, they want a career. As a result, they are willing and ready to work. Smart orhard, depending on what is needed.

Act without being told. This is part of the simple definition of initiative above. Let's expand onit a little bit.

If you are at work and see trash on the floor, do you stop to pick it up and throw it away? If not,you should. While small tasks like this may not be in your job description, taking the time tonotice and do them makes a difference. Employers notice small things, whether theyacknowledge them or not.

The next time you are at work and see a job that needs doing, if you can, step up and do it. It maybe helping the next customer in line or updating your boss's calendar with new information. Thepoint is to act without having to be told to do the work.

Doing a job right vs. Doing it perfectly

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that doing a job right means getting it perfect. No one isperfect. If you do the best you are capable of, that is what matters. Trying to be perfect puts youunder a tremendous amount of stress. Unnecessary stress.

So, remember, right does not mean perfect. It means right.

If you are going to step up and take initiative, make sure you do each job well. Even picking uptrash. If you pick it up, but toss it toward the trashcan and miss, that doesn't count. It is up to youto make sure the trash ends up where it belongs.

This applies to every other aspect of your job. Even the tasks you are told to perform.

    Ask necessary questions.

Whether you are new to the job or have been working for a while, it's likely you will have to dotasks you've never done before. Now what?

Don't assume that you have to do it all by yourself. Instead, take initiative and ask questions. Theright questions.

You can do this by taking a good look at the task you have been assigned and figure out whatyou need to know more about. Then, write down your questions and present them to yoursupervisor. Make sure you get adequate answers to allow you to do a good, even a great, job.

Finish a task, then ask for more. I know, you think I'm crazy. But I'm not. Think about it, whatwould impress your employer more than to ask for more work to do. Not only do you lookresponsible, but you also show that you care about the job and don't intend to play on company

    time.

    This brings us to...

Not idle or wasting time on the job. here is nothing wrong with taking five minutes at thebeginning of the day or part of your lunch break to socialize with your co-workers.

However, when you get down to work, you should work, not play online or socialize. Simplytend to the task at hand and finish it, then move on to the next task. By doing this, you will showyour employer that you value company time. As an additional bonus, you will get moreaccomplished, leaving you free to enjoy your time away from work.

Do not become workaholics. Some of the above may sound like workaholism, but it isn't. Aworkaholic uses work to fill a void in his or her life, giving more of their time and and energy tothe job than to family or community. If you find yourself using work to avoid spending time withloved ones or to not have to deal with a personal issue, please seek professional help. That is notinitiative. It's a destructive pattern that is best broken.

Taking initiative is a surefire way to excel in your job, get a raise or be promoted. It takes timeand is a habit you have to build one block at a time, but the payoff is worth it when you:

Make plenty of money Get the corner office Can afford nice vacations Send your children to the best schools Achieve your dreams

Where can you take initiative right now?
