Matter

Everything is made up of matter! Matter is anything that has volume and

mass Even air is matter – even though you

can’t see it That’s why the paper towel stayed in the

cup the first time The “empty” space in the cup was filled

with air When the hole was added, it allowed the air

to escape and water took its place

BrainPop

Tim and Moby are going to tell us about the different states of matter.

Candle Observations

Miss Kerschen will walk around the room with a lit candle

Make as many observations as you can – about what you see, what is happening, etc.

Make sure long hair is tied back and long sleeves are pushed back

Any inappropriate behavior will not be allowed Your classmates deserve a safe

environment

Candle Observations

What types of things did you observe? Specifically, what was happening to the

candle?

Candle Observations

The wax in the candle was changing states – from solid to liquid and back to solid

The temperature that causes matter to change from solid to liquid is called the melting point

If we got the candle really hot, it would turn from liquid to a gas This temperature is called the boiling point Water isn’t the only thing that boils! This process is called vaporization

When the liquid wax cooled, it turned back into a solid This is called freezing

Class Matter

We will show how adding heat speeds up particles in a substance

As the particles speed up, the substance changes from solid to liquid to gas

Class Matter

Everyone stand up and move to the side of the room Stand as close as you can to each other and

move very slowly You’re a solid!

Now, start moving around half of the room a little faster – You’re melting! You’re a liquid!

Next, walk around the entire room quickly – You’re vaporizing! You’re a gas!

Class Matter

Now the class will start cooling off Walk slower and move toward the side of

the room – you’re condensing back into a liquid!

Walk very slowly to the side of the room and stand very close together – you’re freezing back into a solid!

Adding heat speeds up particles Cooling slows down particles

states of matter and how the particles move.
