Do Now 11/8 – It’s Friday!
1)What is a mutation?2)What is a trait?3)What does inherited mean?
Fun-Fact Friday!Palm trees are technically not trees, they're grass.By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already
dehydrated. Drink more water! There has not been a bearded President of the
United States since 1893.Millions of people have armpits that never smell
due to a gene mutation that stops them from producing sweat.
The division sign "÷" is actually called an obelus.
Think for a second about the most crazy thing you have ever seen…
when something like THIS could be possible…
Imagine in the future…
The future is now…
How did the scientists do it?
GENETICS
Today’s ObjectiveStudent will be able to analyze
various inherited traits and compare prevalence in the classroom to the world.
Inherited TraitsSpend the next ~5-7 minutes answering the
questions given with your partnerWhen finished, come up to the board and place a
tally in the correct slot for each trait
Statistical analysisWhat are Statistics?
the practice or science of collecting and analyzing numerical data in large quantities, esp. for the purpose of inferring proportions in a whole from those in a representative sample.
In our own words? The use of data to learn something about a
population
Let’s do some statisticsFind the percentage of the class that has each trait
and write that percent next to each on your paper.
How to find percent: Count up the number of tallies for a particular trait Divide that number by the total number of students in
the class Ex. There are 5 people with freckles and 25 in the
class, so 5/25 = 0.2 Multiply that number by 100
Ex. 0.2*100 = 20%That is the percentage of people in the class with
that trait
How does it compare to the population?
Earlobes- ~16% have attached earlobesTongue rolling – ~70% can roll their tongueDimples – 25% have themHitchhiker’s Thumb – 25% have itSecond toe – 20% of with a longer second toeHand clasping – 60% Left Thumb DominantWidow’s Peak ~25% have it
Now… What if you could use this information to design your own child?
