Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
- Romans 12:21
Aside from the fact I cannot stand the taste of them, oysters are interesting crea-tures. For one thing, they make no sound, at least none that we can hear. They live solitary lives and bother nobody. They do not complain, even when being eaten. And yet, despite their silence, they have a message for us.
This message concerns the pearls that come from oysters. Even with all the ad-vances modern science has made in the last couple hundreds years, we still cannot adequately imitate the lowly oyster in the production of pearls.
So, how do oysters make pearls anyway? Pearls are made when a small piece of sand, grit, or some other foreign matter gets inside the body of the oyster. Unable to get rid of the source of the irritation, the poor oyster does the next best thing…it builds a layer of hard mineral around whatever is bothing it. Then, it continues to add layers, just like the first. If left alone long enough, it continues to build and build until a large, lustrous, round pearly is created.
Each of us has something in our lives that is painful, harmful, and even destructive if left alone long enough. We all have some weakness or harmful tendency. And what we do with our troubles…our “irritations”…is quite important.

From the Pastor: Making Pearls
2
F r o m t h e p a s t o r ( c o n t . )
Many of us allow these painful parts of our lives to ruin us. We can’t get rid of them, so we let them control us. Yet other people take their weaknesses, their pains, their inner hurts, and use them as cen-ters of beauty…just like the pearl.
Jim Abbott was a major league baseball player who pitched for the California Angels, the New York Yan-kees, the Chicago White Sox, and the Milwalkee Brewers over a ten-year career…despite the fact he was born without a right hand.
Franklin D. Roosevelt served as president of the United States for over thirteen years, even though he was crippled by polio.
We have all seen greeting cards drawn by people who have lost the use of their hands, yet continue to draw by holding pencils or paint brushes in their teeth or between their toes.
The Apostle Paul often stated that he suffered from some physical affliction that troubled him, but he didn’t let that prevent him from spreading the Word of God.
In addition, having troubles of our own can help us to understand those around us who have troubles of their own. There once was a young man (whose name I have unfortunately forgotten) who stuttered as a child and young man. When he overcame his stuttering, he went to college and then became a teacher of children with speech impediments.
Perhaps God lets us have troubles so that our lives will be better and stronger in the long run. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Remember, beautiful pearls are made when the silent oyster covers up the painful irritant that hurts it.
Do you have something in your life you can’t get rid of, but wish you could? Maybe you should try building a pearl around it…
Peace be with you!

Chair Sale- St. Peter’s is blessed to receive new chairs for use in Luther Hall from proceeds from Apple Fest. We now need to sell the “old” chairs. The sale price is only $2.00 per chair and proceeds will benefit our priority project fund here at St. Pe-ter’s. Take the chairs home with you today! Donations can be made to St. Peter’s for the chairs and put in the offering plate or turned into the church office.
Sunday School - Pastor Henry will be of-fering several “mini-courses” for ages high school through adult during the Church School hour. Our first offering is a study on the liturgy entitled “Lutherans at Worship.” This six-week course will explore why we worship, how we worship, the Church Year, worship space, the celebration of Holy Bap-tism and Holy Communion, vestments, li-turgical music, hymnody, etc. We will meet from 9:00-10:00 AM in the church sanctu-ary. All are invited and encouraged to come learn the “hows” and “whys” of our Lutheran liturgy.

The Apple Dumpling Gang
Prep work to make over 1,000 apple dumplings began in August. There was an
assembly line that began in the kitchen with making dough, cutting butter, and
the right mix of cinnamon and sugar to add to the dumplings. After the dough
was made it was delivered to a team that rolled it and cut it in a circle . After the
dough was ready for the apples it moves to a team that assembled the apples and
dough who preps them to be frozen or baked. Below (left) you will see the team
that peals and cores each apple to be taken to the assembly team….
As you can see it is quite a production!
