DO NOW

•Pick up 2 handouts

• In your Journal, create a heading in Table of Contents for our first official TOPIC: MOVEMENT

•Under the movement heading, create a title for the unit: SKELETAL SYSTEM

•Under the title, create an assignment title for: Skeletal System Intro & Axial Notes

Bone Forming and Bone Destroying Cells

• Cells that make up bones are called Osteocytes. When they are forming the bone, they are called osteoblasts. When they are breaking apart part of a bone, they are called osteoclasts.

Types of Bones and Bone Growth

• Intramembranous bones: Start out as layers of connective tissue. Start ossifying from many locations and eventually form spongy bone. They later form a layer of compact bone on top and a Periosteum is formed. This is how the skull in formed.

• Endochondral bones: Start out as cartilage. Start ossifying from one location (in the Diaphysis).

Page 12: DO NOWhighlandsanatomy.weebly.com/uploads/5/8/4/2/... · •Small pink and white handouts (where we labeled axial bones) should be taped/glued in •TOC should have assignment title

Steps 1-3 Bone Formation

• 1) The cartilage starts to break down around the Diaphysis and the Periosteum starts to form there. The epiphysis continue to grow as cartilage.

• 2) Blood vessels and osteoblasts come in and make spongy bone (primary ossification center) at the diaphysis.

• 3) The ossification extends towards the ends of the bone. The osteoblasts lay down compact bone where the spongy bone was in the Diaphysis after the osteoclasts have dissolved the spongy bone. Ends of the bones cartilage starts to break down.

Steps 4-6 Bone Formation

• 4) Secondary ossification sites start on the ends of the bone and head towards the center (spongy bone)

• 5) Epiphyseal disk is formed between the primary and secondary ossification sites. A layer of cartilage that allows the bone to continue to grow. The bone will continue to grow until the disk hardens.

• 6) The Epiphyseal disk hardens and the bone stops growing and is completely ossified.

• Bones are continuously destroyed and rebuilt through our lives (3-5% of our bones are replaces each year).
