Wind Table

‘Individualised furniture based on the visual effects of wind erosion.’

This project is the result of an investigation into mass individualisation and advanced CAD processes. Mass individualisation is the concept that mass produced products do not always need to be identical. Instead of being the same each product is an iteration of a single design.

The wind is a natural force that we are all aware of but cannot see. By recording wind information as a series of lines or paths an ‘image’ of the wind is created. These images are then transformed into 3D with each line representing a cut into the material. What results is a form that appears to have been naturally formed by erosion.

As the wind is constantly changing no two images are the same. This means that each table has its own individual appearance relative to the time and place in which it was created.

1 Muutus Limatura

Is an interchangeable, modular and contemporary piece of furniture that helps individuals to stay organised in increasingly smaller environments. The design utilises the height, which is often unused and wasted in many rooms which have limited floor storage space. A green, amber and red style system was a devised as a simple method in which like packaging, the furniture could communicate a way in which people could store their documents in. Green is the start where mail is sorted into for groups by posting, amber the processing stage and red for long term storage of documents.

Eternit fibre moulded bench

Uses concrete cement which is usually used for roof tiles, was moulded to create a durable, modular and environmentally sound public seating space. It was designed in a way which is could be easily manufactured, transported and use as little material components as possible whilst considering ergonomics. The final design was a modular seating system which was comfortable, economically viable and more environmentally friendly than that of other benches.

3D Printed mouse

The project aim was to create a fully functional computer mouse design by using 3D printing, rather than using conventional manufacturing methods such as injection moulding. The flexibility of the additive manufacture allowed for a unique, ergonomic and functional design which could be printed from just a file download.

The Mycofilter

The Mycofilter is a floating bio filter made entirely out of mushrooms. The aim of the product is to remediate a contaminated environment using a natural process. The design employs a process named Mycofiltration, this uses live mushroom filaments called mycelia to function as a cellular net, giving it the ability to catch and digest harmful contaminates such as biological threats, heavy metals and many more synthetic pollutants. The product is grown through moulds over a period of 7 days and can be tailored to target specific contaminates. The unit housing is grown though a substrate, primarily agricultural waste and can be left on site after use to decompose safely.

Mouse project

Techniques use in rapid prototyping are forever evolving, the Future Technologies module investigates the potential applications of each type by applying them to a mouse and analysing the outcome.

The integration of 3D scanning, virtual prototyping and physical testing allowed for a truly unique design to be produced that keeps in mind the ergonomic and functional requirements of the product.

Body Armour Project

With new technologies of shear thickening fluids, we can now use it to reinforce certain textiles to enhance property performance. Ballistic Kevlar® treated with shear thickening fluid has 2 great advantages against normal ballistic Kevlar®. Firstly the fluid strengthens the fibres in the Kevlar making it considerable harder to break through with projectiles, so fewer layers can be used to achieve the required protection standard. Secondly the fluid treated Kevlar® becomes stab resistant, as it fills the gaps in between fibres which become resistant to edged weapon threats making it extremely difficult to puncture through. With this we can have lighter armour with increased coverage protection over other vital parts of the body without overloading on weight and flexibility.

Linking Supermarkets and Home

This system creates a link between the food we have at home to the food that is at the supermarket to encourage wasting less food and saving money.

Families waste, on average, £50 a month on food which, during the tough economic times can cause an impact on the the families expenditure. Research has shown that the majority of food is wasted due to it going out of date. The systems features allow shopping lists to be created at home, store the households food items, notify when food is going out of date and offer recipes to cook. This can then be accessed while shopping. Other features for the in store system is to show the users offers which are currently in store and the running total of the shop. This system allows a budget to be created and all shopping trips show whether the families food shop is going over or under budget.

Assistive Dementia Product

There are currently more than 800,000 people living with dementia in the UK alone, two thirds of which live in private households within the community. The Assistive Dementia Product is designed to support these individuals, specifically those in the initial stages of dementia, enabling them to care for themselves and live more independently. This is achieved with the use of an interactive planner and prompt display screen, these inform and aid the completion of daily tasks, reinforcing a pre-set schedule. These tasks, when completed, are ‘checked in’ to produce an activity log which is made available to the carers and family members via a website and phone app. The website and mobile app additionally allow for messages and further tasks to be sent to the user throughout the day, allowing for remote care and monitoring.

When away from the home the key fob provides support, this is achieved with the use of GPS tracking technology, fall sensor and mobile calling to provide emergency assistance. The provision of which helps the user to overcome both their personal concerns and those of their and family members, in turn encouraging further independent activity.

Kraken

The Kraken is an ergonomic computer mouse designed to flow perfectly with the contours of the hand, using ergonomics in their truest form to produce a smooth flowing body.

The body was produced using 3D scan data from a physical clay model, this reference data ensured the reproduction of the ergonomic form within the final 3D model. The combination of this scanning technology with additive manufacture allowed for the production of geometries which would not be possible with any other form of manufacture. The scaled detail for example, due to complexity the surface, would not be possible with the use conventional methods of manufacture.

A product which educates parents on the importance of healthy meals, correct portions and helps parents have more control of food preparation.

“In the UK 1 in 3 Year six pupils are obese”.The product is designed for parents and children, the main purpose being to improve communication between children and parents and to change and create new behaviours in terms of healthy meals. The product features an interactive chopping board, a scale and recipe book. The recipe book is a key feature of the design and links with the scale and interactive chopping board. The recipe book includes many healthy recipes for breakfasts, lunches, dinners and desserts which are easy to make with children but also healthy. Each recipe page can be removed and acts as a guide, with the interactive chopping board to aid parents in chopping the correct sizes of the ingredients included in each recipe.

The scale is part of a bowl which has a series of coloured rings showing cup sizes. The scale bowl is aimed at children and helps them weigh different ingredients included in the recipe. The scale has children helping in the kitchen but also keeps them occupied when parents are undertaking tasks which children are unable to do. Each recipe page is double sided, one page which includes the steps of the recipe, the ingredients needed and the equipment needed. The other side has a series of circles that are different sizes which acts as an aid to chopping correct amounts.

1-3 This product provides ideal lighting for cyclists while completing maneuvers on their bicycles during a journey. The product helps eliminate hand signals and therefore a level of risk posed to the cyclist, giving clear indications to other road users and pedestrians.

This product is aimed towards commuter cyclists who are faced with congested traffic conditions throughout daily situations. The products aim is to minimise the level of risk which is posed on cyclists whilst reducing likeliness of a collision through poor communication to other road users. Research suggested there is a lack of communication between cyclist hand signals and road users, resulting in a problem area that need addressing. Many collisions can be avoided through clearer signalling in good time to other drivers. Increased visibility and portability are some of the features that encourage cyclist to use this product without making any compromises. The visibility of the cyclist in increased to a further distance as well as increased stability. This makes cyclists more visible on the road, and allows cyclists to communicate effectively, in a way no other product facilitates.

Intu-it

Interactive sensory stimulation for children who have multi-sensory impairments

Intu-it facilitates successful stimulation sessions in a play/learning style through light, sound, texture and vibration.

Multi-Sensory impairment is a combination of sight and hearing impairment. A person with MSI typically has some residual sight and hearing but their most valuable sources of information are restricted. This largely causes an individual difficulty in communication and mobility. A child with MSI can find a new environment daunting causing them great anxiety and as a result their learning ability is limited. Frequent stimulation for a child with multi-sensory impairments in their pre-school years dramatically enhances their development. A range of environmental experiences is beneficial.

Intu-it is influenced by the behaviours of children with congenital MSI ages 0-5. It is in this age group that the child can use Intu-it to discover their own voice and how to use it, how their movements can manipulate objects and inspire them to explore. Intu-it should be introduced routinely and aims to expand pre-academic skills. Consequently the child’s coordination, perception and orientation should progress. The better start given to a child with MSI the better they will develop other areas of their lives, as well as expanding their auditory and visual skills.

Ski Safe

A product designed to reduce the likelihood of children becoming lost during ski lessons.

The popularity of skiing is increasing rapidly with around 2 million people per year travelling to alpine locations from the United Kingdom alone. The sheer volume of people participating in snow sports means that safety in resorts is a growing concern.

Initial research into snow sports was undertaken to look into the different risks and dangers which can occur whilst partaking in alpine sports. The risk of children becoming lost whilst in ski school is an issue rarely addressed and there are currently limited products on the market to cater for this problem.

Ski Safe is a product that will be bought and used solely by ski schools, to track where each of their pupils are at any time. The information collected by the product will be transferred to the ski school head office and distributed to each instructor via an App available on all smart phones. The product will primarily be used for young children when they are participating in group ski lessons. The product will be installed on the beginner slopes, at the beginning of the ski season at same time as the signposts are erected.

1Exterior Wall Mounted Pump

A simple yet intuitive early warning device for damage reduction from domestic flooding by providing notification to the homeowner and a mechanical system that aids in the removal of water from the property.

Our homes by nature are not flood resistant and adapting them to be with the current products available is a near futile and expensive task. As of 2009 approximately 70% of insurance claims are from flooding and with a government spending cut of £95 million in flood defence, this will likely increase. There are two issues that need to be addressed, (1) how to reduce insurance claims, (2) how to reduce damage to the home. Designed specifically for UK homeowners with a medium to high income. The exterior wall mounted pump provides a first response to rising flood waters. The product can adapt to the large subset of different construction methods that are practiced in the UK.

The product contains an electronic moisture detector which will be located in the underfloor cavity of the home. When this is triggered, a message is sent via SMS, warning them of the rising flood water. This in theory will allow them to react to the situation which may mean moving valuables from an area where it will become damaged. Whilst this is happening a pump in the product is activated extending the time the home owner has to remove their valuables. Ultimately damage to the property is unavoidable, this merely acts as damage reduction over prevention.

This flexible Ankle Support provides sufferers of Charcot Marie Tooth( a muscle wasting disease that affects the hands but predominately the feet) with support and flexibility to prolong the effects of the diseaseThe flexible ankle support provides the sufferers of Charcot Marie Tooth enough support around the ankle to stop the sufferer from rolling over on the ankle, a very common problem. It is flexible and comfortable to wear for long periods of time resulting in a support that is constantly worn. This means that the symptoms of Charcot Marie Tooth are less severe benefitting the user. Finally this support is fully customisable to the user, meaning that: 1, every person is unique, meaning that: Every user is unique, making each individual support bespoke to the user. Users are more likely to wear this support

The Easy-iron

An easier solution to ironingThe Easy-iron is a multi-directional iron that provides support to the wrist area transferring the strain up your forearm instead of just on your wrist. The iron can be used in any direction due to its unique shape. The product allows the user to iron for longer without any pain.

Groundwater flooding early detection system

In the UK 5.2 million properties are at risk from flooding; between two hundred to five hundred thousand properties are at risk from groundwater flooding.

The solution is a personal groundwater flooding early detection system for a property, which aims to give the homeowner plenty of time to prepare and to move personal belongings out of the way from any floodwater which may enter the property. The system does not prevent or stop the impact of flooding; instead it focuses on alerting the owners to forthcoming groundwater. Homeowners need as much time as possible to act and to prepare their property for any such events.

The early detection system comprises of a central hub which is situated in the home with several sensors placed in the ground and positioned precisely to create a perimeter around the property. The sensors detect rising ground water and indicate when flooding is imminent. When the onset of flooding is detected a signal/message is sent to the hub, warning messages are displayed on the unit, and if the homeowner is away a text message and email is sent to their laptop or mobile phone.

Train Kiosk

The train kiosk’s purpose is reassurance when travelling. The kiosk shows a UK train lines map and provides daily commuters with their personal plotted route and the current location of their desired train. The kiosk displays statistical information from the different train companies when the kiosk is not in use. The kiosk welcomes the commuter to use the machine, by swiping their train ticket, through the card reader.

Ankle Guard

Research shows that ankle injuries are the most common injury in football, ahead of knee, hamstring and head. Ankle injuries are mainly caused by hard impact tackles from the opponent or landing awkwardly. Most players view an ankle sprain as a nuisance, but you need to protect the ankle so that you do not injure it again.

The product I have designed is suitable for amateurs and professional footballers. The ankle guard is aimed to help prevent and protect the ankle from twisting during training sessions and football matches. It uses the spring action to prevent the ankle from twisting any further than the point of when an injury is caused. The design is inspired by the shin guard. The springs are located in the shin guard. They are connected to the ankle guard by a metal wire. When the ankle is twisting, the ankle guard triggers the spring to be stretched via the metal wire, until the point where it is stopped by the moulding of the inside of the shin guard. This prevents the ankle from twisting.

The product is manufactured in separate parts, this allows components to be replaced easily. The shin guard, ankle guard and middle part are made from polypropylene because it has excellent robust properties. The foam is added for comfort on the shin guard and ankle protection unit.

1Rear Shunt Guard

An impact absorbing tail guard with an addition of anti theft screws that replaces the current tail guard of scooters used today.

The UK deals with at least 420,000 rear end shunt accidents per year; out of these 30 people are killed each day. This product is a redesign of current tail guards on scooters used by commuters. What it does, is absorb rear end shunts afflicted on the scooter by another vehicle at low speeds. With the addition of anti theft screws, it helps improve the security that scooters face today.

The unique selling point is an aluminium housing within the guard that contains aluminium foam. This foam is highly impact absorbent and is very light, cheap to manufacture and can be recycled. It’s encased by two outer panels that serve a purpose and these are made from aluminium; the middle panel has a hazard print that visually shows when the guard is damaged to prevent scooters from being used as they become dangerous on the road. The outer panel has four angled slits running on both sides; this is to help the guard crumple upwards to prevent hitting the wheel and spinning the rider out of control.Lastly, two anti-theft screws are found at the front of the guard that are a replacement for current screws used in fixing the guard on to the scooter.

1HyDrench SystemA rewarding system that aims to decrease dehydration levels at music festivals by creating better access to free water.

Attendees of festivals often succumb to dehydration. Lack of access, high prices, contaminated/broken water lines, or long queues contribute. The two products that make up the system work in conjunction with one another to provide quick access and serve as a reminder to keep hydrated.The festival, company Drench and water tank company work together.

Each attendee is given a bottle with a QR code. This water bottle works alongside the mobile water carriers. The leak proof valve of the bottle only allows water in through the water gun of the carrier. The two valves push into one another to create a connection for the water to run through. The QR code is read by a small camera in the gun; the data saved on an SD Card.

The tracked data shows how much an individual person has drunk throughout the event. The incentive to join the system is a reward scheme based on how much water consumed.

2uDrive

Instilling safe driving awareness amongst pre-drivers, before they get behind the wheel.

This handheld device, aimed at 11+ year olds, allows an adult driver and young person to work together towards a safer mentality towards driving. A GPS chip in the device tracks the cars speed and movements. It is up to the child whether the driver is being safe or not, by using the accelerator and break handles to show how they think the car should be driven.

The device can be further used at home, via an SD card that records the journey – this journey can then be assessed on a computer. The GPS links with Google Maps to recreate the same route for the child to take again, like a hazard perception test.

Driving Awareness Device

One policy is shared between a group of students and paid for like a household bill. Each member to join is given the opportunity to receive the device at a cost. Each member to utilise the device brings down the insurance premium.

The device is fitted to the car dashboard and displays a graphic on the windscreen based on driving behaviour. After the drive, the device is removed and placed into a PC docking station and the details from the drive are uploaded to an online policy database. Through the database, each member of the policy can view how each member has been driving. Also available, is a monetary gain in linking the database to social network websites broadcasting the driving details good and bad.

Collapsible Cycling Helmet

Designed for the cyclist who values the use of a helmet, but has limited storage or carrying capacity. A replaceable, collapsible centre allows the helmet to reduce its size by more than half and is secured via an extension strap built onto the chin strap.

The centre protection is enhanced by the use of D3O, a shock absorbing smart material, plus the shock absorbing properties of the polypropylene collapsing structure. The outer panels of the helmet are durable ABS polymer and the impact liner is standard EPS foam. The Polypropylene centre structure will intentionally damage revealing stress marks - proving the helmet has protected its user and encourages the replacement of the cheap Polypropylene centre.

Fencing system

The portable fencing solution to enable a safe and convenient way to secure horses.

The current systems are an inconvenience and unsafe to horses and their users. From a survey conducted it was found that just over 81% of owners find the current electric fencing an inconvenience and 62% of horses are injured whilst grazing. With 73% of owners using electric fencing a new system was needed and with this fencing the setup has been made easier; the new footplate design allows easy placing into the ground. The fencing has a retractable reel component therefore the fencing placement is a lot more convenient as the fencing can remain up whilst it is altered. The footplate also allows for easier storage and transportation of the product. Once the fencing is finished with it can be assembled as one and then stored away without needing too much space.

Driving Aid

With this product the driver will be given extra tuition for the first six months after passing their driving test with the band acting as a secondary instructor!

This device is a sleek elegant but simple design wrapped around the steering wheel which will aid young drivers. The device grips neatly on the steering wheel tightly in place and bonded with grip tape. The band is a simple product which is fitted around a steering wheel and indicates poor driving through gps and accelerometers giving live feedback to the young driver, this can then be seen via an online portal, the data recorded will then be used for Insurance. The is a comercially viable product which will encourage safer driving behaviour as well as help lower insurance premiums for young drivers.

Supermarket refrigeration system

Low energy supermarket refrigeration system designed to remove separate chilling stationsThis fridge pallet reduces CO2 emissions by combining the spate chilling systems into one that is used throughout the whole delivery process. The Fridge pallet is a refrigeration system that keeps the food it contains chilled from the depot to the shop floor in the store, this means it eliminates the need for refrigerated articulated lorry’s and for large warehouse chillers. The Fridge pallet uses magnetic chilling technology which uses 20% less energy than current hydrocarbon water-cooled refrigeration systems. The fridge pallet is supplied with power produced by a charging system in the depot, store warehouse and on the shop. In transit between depot and store the fridge pallet is kept powered by a rechargeable lithium ion battery that is recharged at each charging point. The customizable size of the product means that it can be adjusted to fit various store and stocks of food.

POD Stove

Lightweight camping stove that combines cooking and lighting into a self-contained and self-sustaining system.This new stove design combines both cooking and lighting into one self-contained and self-sustaining product, therefore removing the dependency on external battery power. The system consists of a compact and light weight stove, dual functioning lighting and a cooking pod. The self-sustaining element of the product comes from thermo-electrical generating technology. The 3 torches powered by this technology, can be used either as fixed lamps or as standard torches. The torches become portable by unclipping them from their charging points located on stove body. The whole stove is transported in two pans that serves as a travel case and also as a cooking pan.

Calming Headset

Helps calm and de-stress in day to day life

Workplace stress is a huge and growing problem across all professions; with nurses and teaching professionals averaging the highest rates. High stress levels have a negative impact on all areas of a person’s life including their mental wellbeing as well as being associated with very serious physical illnesses such as cardiovascular disease. This product aims to help people relieve workplace stress by using a wireless headset and stress ball to create personal space and establish a more peaceful environment without having to leave the desk or workplace.

The product consists of temple massagers mounted on closed headphones which play a relaxing audio sequence. Padding on the inside of the temple massager administers a small amount of pressure through inflating and deflating. The stress ball is a flexible rubber mesh which allows the user to not only squeeze but push and pull the ball in all directions. A ball inside the mesh houses the electronics to allow the inner ball to pulse quickly and gradually slow down, encouraging an individual’s breathing to mimic the pulsing and gradually breathe slower and relieve stress. Luxury Camping Stove

The luxuries of your kitchen, in the great outdoors

Camping is an increasingly popular activity. As more and more people take to the great outdoors there is higher demand for aesthetically pleasing, easy to use products. With a more luxurious style of camping becoming the norm, the traditional survivalist products are no longer top of the checklist for many campers.

The Luxury Camping Stove allows the user to bring all the amenities of their homely kitchen whilst camping. The stove includes facilities to prepare food comfortably and safely, store food to keep it warm whilst cooking, and of course do the washing up. It packs down neatly into a carry case that doubles as washing up bowl to allow easy transportation of everything at once. The stove includes colour coded chopping boards for safe food preparation, pots and pans in various sizes, and even a steamer leaving the recipe ideas for camping food virtually endless.

All the pots, pans and of course cooker in one place - cooking outdoors has never been easier or safer. Forget the old saying ‘everything except the kitchen sink’ now campers can pack everything into the camping sink.

Equipment work station for medical professionals within the third sector organisation at outdoor events

The mobile multi-equipment work station is an ideal design solution that caters to third sector organisations that provide medical and first aid services at outdoor events such as festivals.

The product solution aims to provide a convenient and efficient way of managing resources and equipment on site within medical tents at outdoor events, which as a result will help to facilitate treatment for medical staff on site. The product solution will improve set up times at outdoor events, storage and organisation.

The product solution makes use of a stretcher which can be adjusted manually to suit the user which temporarily fastens to the central storage unit and can easily be taken off by the user as at when needed. The central storage unit can then be left within the medical tent whilst the stretcher can be used to obtain a casualty on site. The storage units within the central storage unit have been designed with custom configuration in mind where the user can change the arrangement of the storage unit to suit their needs. The modular feature on the storage units also means that the user is able to stack the units away whilst a casualty is able to sit on the central storage unit.

Younger Persons Safety Helmet

A safety helmet designed to remove the discomfort and irritation that at some point everyone has had with cycling helmets.

There are many reasons why children do not like wearing helmets; the biggest reason is the discomfort associated with the chinstrap, pinching and friction burns can be commonplace.

Removing the chinstrap and replacing it with a headband does a number of things; it removes the pinching of the skin under the chin and friction burns caused by the chinstrap. It also ensures the helmet can only be put on one way, the correct way. The headband tightens around the head snuggly keeping the helmet on the head.

The removal of the nylon straps also means the aesthetics are dramatically changed. This unique change in aesthetics coupled with the irritation free design aims to get children wearing helmets.

Teenage Reinforcement Insurance

A more intuitive system of insurance based on rewarding young teens that are safer drivers with reduced premiums.

A system based on rewards rather than punishments, the safer the young person drives the more money they can save. By logging in and out of the device the driver becomes aware that their driving is being monitored through a black box, this promotes a safe driving mentality; this becomes a behavior over time.

This less intrusive system that keeps quiet and sits in the background allows the driver to see the information that is being gathered to show them what they are doing right and wrong, so they can become better safe drivers, as well as showing the money they are saving by driving safely.

O-Case

The circular suitcase solution that targets security while travelling.

Travelling abroad or commuting within your country can be a stressful experience. The security of belongings is one concern that many travellers may have. There is a gap in the market for a suitcase solution that will make luggage seem secure, without drawing any attention to the security of it, which many current products do.

The O-Case allows users to fit all of their clothes and necessities in one place, while the hidden zip protects it in an unnoticeable way so that people cannot figure out how to open the case easily. As well as this, the suitcase is surrounded by a pair of circular rubber tyres. These tyres are propelled by four bearings which are hidden inside both sides of the case. This system gives the luggage an added innovative feature of being more stable than other wheeled luggage, especially when pulling it up curbs or stairs.

Commuting with this suitcase is more secure and leaves your mind at ease. This is an all round enjoyable and aesthetically pleasing way of taking your belongings away with you.

Erode

The Erode chair is a blank canvas for erosion. The chair’s carefully picked materials are hidden from view at the beginning of its life by a black surface layer. As the chair follows the user through their life, the layer is worn away by the day-to-day use of the object.

This wear creates a visible record of its constant use. The chair is now personal to the user; it is unique through the way its owner has interacted with it. This ‘emotional’ attachment will translate into a desire to keep the chair rather than replace it.

MycoLight

MycoLight is a table or floor lamp that tackles the problem of wasted packaging in modern consumer products.

It reduces its impact on the environment by using its existing packaging that protects it during transport to then create its own structure. This protection is made out of MycoBond ©; a new packaging material composed of agricultural waste bonded together with mycelium (a form of mushroom) and is completely biodegradable.

Why couldn’t the packaging be a visible part of the final product? This decision is left to the user; the lamp can stand on its own as a simple floor lamp or be positioned on its “protective structure”.

A wall mounted training device for mixed martial art fighters that enables people to train without a partner. This was a response to gym trainers and fighter’s needs and current restrictions when training alone.

The product allows fighters to improve their fighting techniques and keep motivated whilst training at the Gym or at home.

The product has a unique spring feature which allows you to practise clinching techniques and move the dummy around the head freely. It can be used for punches, elbows, knees and kicks. It is adjustable in height and the spring tension can be adjusted for different sized trainers and weight divisions.

This is a coffee table designed in response to a brief highlighting a furniture that will need to be comfortable and user friendly.

It is multi-functional with a storage system on either side where you can put your magazines and books. It comes with a portable tray that slides down the ply table edges. It has a hidden compartment that enables you to store items that you may use on a regular basis. It has an elegant look with plywood frame and legs. The surfaces of the two part extendable tables have a sleek Corian finish to it.

1-3Bespoke exhibition display systems are design to be one offs and made to a custom design and specification. Bespoke systems are primarily used by larger organisations with a large marketing budget.

This system bridges the gap between the two systems. It is a series of parts that are rented and returned ready to be reused and reconfigured like the aluminium systems. However they have the shape and feel of the bespoke systems. This is done by having a range of different parts that can be configured in multiple ways. The parts are made to a high quality and rented as parts before being put together to make a stand. These parts are rented at set price for a time and the returned ready to be rented out again. All graphics are temporary and can be removed. The system is designed to fit in the centre of the market.

1Social Cycle

A device and website to ease and encourage less participating groups into cycling.Social Cycle is a device that clips onto your bike handle bars and runs alongside a social network for new cyclists.Three times more men cycle than women, and women in particular have a reluctancy to cycle due to lacking confidence in both their own cycling ability and other road users. Many cycling schemes have targeted the participation of women to cycle and Social Cycle aims to take this one stage further.

The Social Cycle website makes friend matches of users with similar abilities and location and encourages group cycling - to build confidence and initiate friendships within cycling groups.

The device is clipped onto handlebars with buttons placed near both grips. An e-ink screen (a low energy consuming screen technology) will give warnings and direct the rider through up coming hazards and to safer routes. As the knowledge base on local routes increases as more users contribute to the website; local councils will be able to use the data to identify problem areas and respond appropriately.

1Incentive based recycling system

The aim of this product is to create a group of sustainably minded people, through rewarding those who create less waste and recycle more. The product weighs the amount of waste created by each individual user and logs it on a database, and throughout the course of the year, the user is rewarded accordingly.

Through this logging, the product is also able to inform local authorities/collection agencies when it needs emptying. This feature could potentially reduce the amount of money spent by the council on unnecessary waste collection services and increase environmental awareness at the end users level.

The method in which the waste and recycling is stored also could shorten the overall process of recycling, as similar materials are sorted prior to collection.

Lean2 is a modern and simplistic take on the age-old writing desk.

Its main stand out feature is that it is ‘hung’ on the wall and only requires two supporting legs rather than four that most people come to expect with desks. Combined with a shelving system that offers a versatile range of storage and optional under lighting.

Alongside these features, is ample desk space to use a laptop, read or make quick notes on. This feature slides out from the wall, revealing a desk and cable tidy compartment, suitable for hiding any laptop chargers, desk lamp wires and stationery.

Conceal/Display Storage

The problem of lack of space in current homes is no secret. This furniture piece is a solution for the lack of storage space in particular, by encouraging people to use all available space to its full capacity.In the ‘Space in new homes’ survey 2009 ‘57% said there was not enough storage for their possessions also 48% didn’t have enough space to entertain visitors at all.’

The storage is designed to be mounted on the wall, making use of the vertical space. Taking the items that would normally be stored on ground level, onto the wall, makes more room for other furniture to take its place.

The unit is a 2 tiered rectangular unit with vertical divisions to organise different items into the compartments. A significant feature of this unit is the sliding doors. The sliding doors allow the unit to be completely concealed for purposes of privacy. The user can decide what they would like to have on display depending on the environment and occasion.

This is a contemporary piece, which has a function that would be desirable in many compact living spaces. This is ideal for anyone needing storage that will possibly increase their available floor space which can be used for other activities.

The design idea stems from evidence that suggests there is an obvious need for more storage space in today’s UK homes.

1Flexible Workspace Furniture System

A system of furniture for collaborative working environments that provides flexibility for the user’s privacy needs.Due to technological advances and the increased ability to work from a variety of locations, the way of working is changing. The requirement of offices now is to facilitate the interaction between workers, something that is not gained when working from home or in an isolated environment. This is demonstrated in the rise of shared office and coworking environments, where workers can purchase a temporary workspace for as long as they require.

The furniture system addresses the balance of interaction and privacy within the workplace by providing for both needs within a simple movement. Formed of several elements, the system accommodates individual and group work styles which include moveable screens that can be easily raised and lowered. This allows workers to have the open interaction with each other, sharing ideas and gaining inspiration but when required, have the privacy for a phone call or concentrated work.

The system lends itself to the temporary workspace environments, however can easily be applied to a typical workplace to create an interesting, more productive atmosphere.

The Identifier

This device allows blind individuals to be able to independently identify contents of tins and other packages.One of the biggest problems blind people struggle with in the kitchen is identifying food. Although there are products that tackle this they all involve the need of a sighted person to help identify the contents beforehand. The Identifier scans the bar code and prints a braille label as well as audibly saying the products name. This allows the user to know what the item is and then place it in the correct cupboard. When preparing food the label will allow the user to know the contents of a tin without having to rescan the barcode.

Sheet Steel Shelf

A modular shelving system which can be uniquely personalised for each user.

This is a modular shelving system that uses sheet steel shelves. The shelves are made up of three spot welded parts. The shelves attach to a twin slot bracket and are designed to be placed upside down if required. The shelves come in different sizes to cater for books, DVDs or other objects. The system comes with back boards that slot between the brackets to create a smooth wall behind the shelves.

Nomad

A transportable Retail Merchandising Unit, for start-up businesses up to Multi-National CorporationsRetail Merchandising Units are a relatively new yet successful product range, they are an integral part of shopping centre’s revenue. Designed in response to the popular marketing trend of Pop-Up stores. A point of sale product, with no restrictions on location. Which intern allows business owners to make the most of social media, to create a ‘Guerilla Retail’ presence.

Nomad uses Alluminium extrusion corner supports, and a central bracket to create the frame. Combined with parametric manufacturing to create different unit heights. These modular components can be used to create seven different units. Which cater to retail, promotion, food & produce and product display business needs. Current units offer a lack of branding options, which combined with exclusion zones around more permanent stores. Make it hard for businesses to establish a visible presence. Nomad provides personal branding options which attach to the existing unit. Current unit owners complain of a trade-off between display space and storage space. Nomad units carry no dead-space, and can be tailored for the user’s needs.

A flexible daybed, with an inclusive mechanism which transforms Lounge into a Chaise-LongueThe project was undertaken with the aim of creating a product for the modern home. Existing products do not accommodate for anthropometric needs. Lounge’s central mechanism allows for the thigh support to be altered, for the 5% to the 95% of anthropometric values. Designed using the same principles as automotive seating, the realisation is a unique product for all body sizes. Lounge not only provides a level support for the user’s legs, it can also be angled to provide a more natural and comfortable seating position.

Modular Outdoor Seating

A conformable range of outdoor furniture that tackles the behaviour of people to outdoor spaces;

The project was aimed at creating ‘intelligent spaces’ that actively encourage areas for social cohesion in a range of different environments. The research found that public spaces were not being used to their full extent due to the social aspect, cleanliness and environment in which it is situated within. This modular seating was designed to improve all of the above, providing a modern solution that will render a unique layout creating an individual space by implementing a configurable set of seating products a range of users.

Health benefits within businesses were also outlined, employees leaving the working environment on their lunch break would be more productive in the afternoon, this intelligent space would help encourage workers but also the public to take a break and once more enjoy the environment around them.

A playful and lightweight indoor/outdoor lounge chair.

The ‘eXagoni’ (Latin for hexagon) was a strong visual project that intends to combine a bold regimental feature with an innovative material and a simple manufacturing process, whilst keeping the function of a chair.

‘eXagoni’ is manufactured out of expanded polypropylene (EPP) giving it strong and resilient properties yet keeping the chair lightweight and easily transportable. The indented hexagon feature running down both sides of the chair are not only aesthetical, but also provide the draining of rainwater when used outdoors. Composed of five components, assembly and disassembly is simple, rewarding the user with an easy storage opportunity.

Video Games Controller for Children Living With Cerebral Palsy

A video games input for PlayStation 3 and PC gaming, designed for young people living with motor function disabilities, in particular cerebral palsy, to encourage both competitive and cooperative play with their peers.Game immersion is vital to this enjoyment and the controller is the interface through which the user interacts with virtual world, it is the relay between man and machine, and therefore a good controller means good immersion. However, what if you are unable to use the standard inputs without comfort or ease? This question was applied to the most common motor disability in UK children today, cerebral palsy, in order to design an input which would allow a more relaxed gaming experience for those children as well as resonating with other users.

This controller is ambidextrous and modular, allowing the user to set it up around their abilities, playing competitively or splitting the controller with a friend. Influenced by arcade machines, the oversized “action” button makes playing simple games easy, and the additional buttons allow for the user to engage with more complex scenarios. Additionally the large, low-profile joystick allows better control of the directional input and optional suction feet also allow the product to be firmly attached to a surface. The product is compatible with the PS3 and PC through a USB port, but could be connected to other consoles using ready bought adaptor.

Go Power

Go Power allows users to tap kinetic energy from natural body movement, giving users electrical heat in emergency situations. Electricity is produced and then stored in batteries. It can then be used for powering devices, generating heat or sustaining other vital body functions.

The product is designed for winter sport enthusiasts, hikers, alpinists and mountaineers. These users are at risk of frostbite due to the cold temperatures that they are exposed to. The main benefit of using Go Power is the ability to recycle the energy used to keep the body in motion and transform it into low voltage electricity. Go Power can be easily fitted onto shoes or boots. Small size makes the product unobtrusive. The advantage of the system is its affordability and use of durable materials.Go Power will significantly improve the chances of survival when in emergency situations.

A Foldable Bicycle Designed For Ease Of Transportation When Collapsed

This project aims to solve the problems associated with transporting a foldable bicycle when it is collapsed by securely fastening together and folding in a way that positions the wheels side by side on the floor, allowing the user to pull the bike behind them via the seat. The bike is made with reliability as a priority; all components are standard, off the shelf parts so the bike can easily be repaired in the event of failure.

When collapsed, foldable bikes become an extremely difficult shape to hold, carry and manoeuvre. Also the lack of locking mechanism means that they are free to open out on their own accord, risking entrapment of fingers. This design tackles these problems by ensuring the collapsed bike is securely fastened together, it also folds in a way that positions the wheels side by side, allowing the bike to be pulled via the seat, similar to a suitcase. This will make navigating crowded bus/train stations effortless and adds the benefit of being able to pull/lead the bike up and down stairs. There are a few of designs tackling this problem currently, although in order to work they use newly designed, non-standard components. In the likely event of failure these new, non-standard parts cannot usually be sourced, rendering the bike useless. All the components used with this design are standard, off the shelf parts, making repairs simple and greatly increasing the product lifetime.

Motorised Rescue Board

A rescue board designed to aid Beach Lifeguards when rescuing casualties from the sea.

The rescue board is the most frequently used piece of equipment by the lifeguards. During the 2011 summer season, the rescue board was used for 37.7% of all recorded incidents. Studies have shown that a casualty’s chance of survival deteriorates by 10% for every minute delay in delivering a defibrillation shock. With these statistics in mind I addressed the issue of speeding up the rescue act but keeping the usability of the rescue board.

Another issue with the current rescue board is that it is relatively difficult to rescue a heavy casualty. The Motorised Rescue Board can be used as a replacement of the rescue board, the motorisation speeds up the rescue and in doing so increases the casualty’s chance of survival. The shape of the board is relatively similar to the original rescue board, this preserves usability.

The rear of the rescue board has a mechanism that expands the rear of the board and allows a heavy casualty to be securely attached so that “rescue breaths” can be applied and the casualty can be brought in shore with ease.

Chainsaw Safety Device

A guard system that reduces the risk of injury as a result of chainsaw kickback

Research has shown that over the last 10 years in the UK, over 3,000 people have suffered serious injury through chainsaw use, 72 of which have been fatal. In response to these statistics, research for the chainsaw safety device began by enquiring into where the main dangers of the device lie, leading to it being discovered that “chainsaw kickback” was the largest danger surrounding the use of a chainsaw. The recoil action sends the saw towards the head and neck of the user, which is obviously a huge danger.

The chainsaw safety device is a simple and convenient solution to a complicated problem. A guard attachment to the saw will vastly reduce any injuries that may have otherwise occurred to the user, whilst not impeding the usability of the chainsaw. It was essential that the guard did not affect the saws use, as this could have increased the danger, if the arborist was working outside their comfort zone. This was ultimately the primary objective of the design; to increase the safety of the day to day work of a tree surgeon without hampering their ability to the do their job.

Shower Gel Washer

A product designed to lower the usage of shower gel and to reduce the total waste material.Around 80% of people use shower gels resulting in many thousands of tonnes of waste a year in waste material.

The product allows the user to make a one off payment, only having to then replace the capsule when needed. The capsule is a thin plastic pocket holding the shower gel. Once pierced the gel slowly seeps from the capsule and into a sponge. Exfoliating balls collect the gel from the sponge and as the product is rubbed over the skin the balls help fully cleanse the pores.

To refill the sponge with shower gel, the user presses the top section down. Each time a limited amount is passed through meaning the user cannot use the capsule quickly.

Adjustable Wheelchair

A wheelchair with a longer life at an affordable price.There are around 1.2 million wheelchair users within the UK, many of these users do not have a fitted wheelchair, which can cause injury or pain in the long run. They are not purchased mainly due to cost. The product is designed to change in size as the user does; this is to save the user money in the long term.

The adjustability of the seat and backrest also helps to increase comfort. The backrest can be reclined so that a more comfortable experience is provided for the user. The footrests also offer support to the user when they are getting out of the wheelchair by supporting the calves. The handles for pushing the wheelchair can be tucked away according to the user’s discretion, signalling to other if the user requires help. The handles are designed to fit comfortably in the hand.

Helping to reduce the risk of contamination within a health care environment, specifically for the sterilising of surgical instruments.This packaging is designed so that the exact instruments needed for a procedure can be sterilised, ideally so that the pack can be taken straight to the medical procedure without further inspection. MediPak uses a translucent polyethylene membrane to encase the instruments within an external casing made entirely of one sheet. The thin ribbing feature means that, if an instrument is not needed for surgery, rather than risking contamination the segment can be broken off from the pack.The hook can be attached to single instrument packs if desired yet can also double up as a stand for the pack. Indicator clips are slid in to the top from the side and are removable so that the main packaging can be re-used. These indicator come preloaded with stickers which change colour signifying if the correct heat and steam penetration has been reached.

Information Kiosk

Helping travellers to access vital information about their journey quickly and efficiently using the growing technology of QR coded information.This information kiosk is designed for commuters, especially irregular. By scanning the QR code on the ticket, the basic information for the next available journey is displayed. .i.e. Departure Time, Platform Number, Places Calling at and Number of Changes. Further information within the kiosk includes: Station Map showing how to access the desired platform for both disabled and regular commuters / Transport Links (Buses, Taxi’s, Metro etc) / Hotels / Bars and RestaurantsDue to the dual screens, different aesthetic combinations can be set with multiple kiosks.
