DMI-SAGA OF SERVICE

“LOVING GOD IN SERVING THE POOR”

The Daughters of Mary Immaculate and

Collaborators, DMI, was founded on the

Biblical ground that, Service to the most

downtrodden among the creation is Service

to God Himself.

Very Rev.Fr.Dr.J.E.Arulraj founded the

Daughters of Mary Immaculate Mission in

1984, in a remote village in India. The main purpose of DMI was to train and prepare a

dedicated team of women towards the objective of ameliorating the sufferings of the

downtrodden. For over two decades, the DMI has undertaken several charity and

development activities doing yeoman service in villages and remote areas. In the later

years, the society focused its dynamic efforts in building non-profit educational

institutions that not only support innumerable poor rural students but also provide High

Quality Standards in Education globally.

The love of fellow human beings transcends international borders and it was this love

that made DMIextend its activities to the

continents of Africa and South America.

During thecourse of its journey, the Founder

of DMI founded another religious society for

men, Missionaries of Mary Immaculate -

MMI. Today, MMIs are working in many

missions across the world and hand in hand

with Sisters of DMI.

DMI Group of Institutions are built with

values and principles that govern the basic

well- being of the mankind, care for the

nature and Christian values that are

prescribed by the Church. Every student who is joining the DMI Group of Institutions is

expected to follow this and is moulded with same values.

DMI landed in the shores of Africa in Tanzania, in response to the invitation of His

Eminence Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, Arch Bishop of Dar-es-Salaam and Most. Rev.

Norbert Mtega, Archbishop of Songea in 2003. Today in Africa DMI serves in Tanzania,

Malawi and Zambia with Universities, Schools and Hospitals in Ethiopia and pastoral

missions in South Sudan.

DMI – Presence in Zambia

The University is named after Saint Eugene De Mazenod, who is the Founder of Oblates

of Mary Immaculate (OMI), to which the Very. Rev. Fr. J. Emmanuel Arulraj, OMI,

Founder of DMI congregation belongs.

DMI is here for not just education alone, but also for making a difference by molding

the youth with discipline too. A great deal of care is invested in bringing life in the

campus and in the lives of the students. You can witness a sea of difference among the

students of DMI-ST.EUGENE than their contemporaries elsewhere in the country in

quality and discipline.

The University is proud of a vibrant student community, which synchronizes well with

the mission of the University and moves forward.

At the DMI Institutions, laboratories are seen not merely as a part of University

curriculum, but as a center of higher learning and research. A lot of encouragement is

showered to the students to pursue the studies and use

University’s facilities for learning after the college hours.

Furthermore, the students are encouraged to use the facilities

of the library and laboratory beyond the classroom scope at

their own free will to carry on experimentation and hone

their analytical skills when required. The labs and libraries are

kept accessible to them for this purpose.

Though the University is not having its own hostel facilities and residential facilities for

members of staff, the master plan makes provisions for all the facilities in the new

campus soon. Till then, some of the facilities like residential quarters for students and

staff are provided through lease arrangements in the neighborhood.

Discipline …. Not Just Education:

DMI- St. Eugene being a Catholic Congregation owned University; the Sisters give

maximum care for DISCIPLINE and ETHICAL PRACTICES. Every student is monitored

throughout their tenure in the campus, records maintained in future too. Every 15

students have a staff advisor who takes care of their academic and emotional needs.

The University makes annual medical checkup compulsory for all the students who are

pursuing degree programmes. This is done to ensure, the students are aware of their

health conditions and to inform them of the remedial measures required to be a healthy

individual.

DMI-ST.EUGENE UNIVERSITY strongly advocates the social responsibility of all the

human beings. Hence, efforts are made to inculcate the habit in them during their course

of studies.

At DMI-ST.EUGENE, the philosophy is that, the tenure what a student spends during

HIGHER LEARNING is the time for character molding. Hence the University is

committed to develop the student community with its flexible, but in the mean time

disciplined rules and regulations. All the students are provided with by-laws, Do’s and

Don’ts, when they join the University.

LIBRARY

The library provides the necessary referential and course texts to benefit

students. DMI-SEU library boasts of, not just traditional books alone but

also digital and Internet library. Renowned journals are available to

prepare our students for successful careers.

In line with the mission, the collection in the library is not on just books,

but also on digital texts, the modern way of reading. The library also

subscribes to e-journals to expand and

update the knowledge base of its students

and also the teaching community. Today,

the University subscribes to latest digital

libraries across the world and has more

than 10,000 digital books. There is a

library in each centrewhich remains open for the convenience of the

student community. This system ensures the students visiting the library,

refer, and borrow books and journals. It is also an important fact to note

that the entire network is built on local service provider.

The classroom is an online and virtual lecture mode from the University’s

hub at the Great North Road campus. The advantage of the virtual mode is

that it allows participants to

communicate with one another, view

presentations or videos, interact with

other participants, and engage with

resources in groups.

Just like in a real-world classroom, the

teacher in a virtual classroom and

students are logged into the virtual

learning environment at the same time.

There is interactive learning that takes place when the classes are in session.

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICT)

ICT/Digital Literacy is necessary today. Everyoneneeds to possess a basic

understanding of ICT and to use it productively as students, workers and

citizens.

Teaching people to be competent basic users of ICT technologies is an

important role of the courses we offer in all our programmes. The purpose

is to encourage teachers to be

successful with modern day

technology in their academic and

work careers to enhance student

learning, and so they can

efficiently keep up with the trends

of today’s professional

requirements.

Beyond a basic user competency,

our society also needs more

knowledgeable and capable to

deploy, manage and maintain ICT equipment, software and systems, to

enable them to utilize it for users.

It is in the laboratory that students learn to practice the activities of a true

scientist – by asking questions, performing procedures, collecting and

analysing data, answering queries that explode in the minds, and to think

of new and progressive dimensions to explore.

The Computer Lab has modern computers and a substantial collection of

software backed by un-interrupted power supply. This makes it convenient

for students to enjoy uninterrupted learning.

The labs offer one computer to a student. Computer studies form a part of

all the studies in DMI – St. Eugene, irrespective of the subject – Education,

Literature, Social Work or Business Administration efficient use and

proficiency in computers will enhance learning.

The curriculum is designed to facilitate learning in students who enroll in

the Fast Track Programme, graduate with sufficient level of understanding

in computer technology. The programming knowledge they learn is specific

to the field of their study. All the students are encouraged to do projects

based on or using ICT as a tool.

Students will not just learn, but also practice and simulate real life situations

that will reinforce their learning. Well-qualified professors and lecturers in

ICT support this infrastructure. The well-equipped and networked labs

ensure the prompt delivery of knowledge and training to the students.

Physical Sciences

The basis of a scientist’s belief is not the result of mere thinking or reading

from textbooks. The basis for their belief is the result of the careful

collection and analysis of laboratory evidence they compile during the

course of their study.

The laboratory is central to scientific learning. It is more than an

indifferently locatedplace at the back of the classroom. Thelaboratory is the

place where science students learn by doing.

Home Economics laboratory

Home Economics is an all-encompassing course that teaches everything

from homemaking skills and first aid, to getting a job and managing a

home.Dewey’s view was that cooking and eating together is not only a

didactic tool, but also instrumental in teaching people how to cooperate

with and engage in our natural world and communities, and in effect create

thriving democracies. The DMI-SEU has a well equipped nutrition

It is a known fact that many teachers were not able to pursue higher studies

due to distance and non-presence of the Universities in their provinces,

among other factors. Most of the Universities are located along the line of

rail. To answer this need, the answer is to move close to the provincesor

places close to where the students reside.

The University launched the Institute of Virtual and Distance Learning

programmethrough virtual classrooms to meet the emerging needs of the

country. The institute has centres at all the provincial capitals, libraries and

labs for Computer Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Home

Economics. The resident lecturers at the centres assist the students in their

practicals, offer lectures and tutorials sessions.

COURSE DESIGN

All the programmes cited are designed so that teachers can teach minimum

of two subjects. The courses are rich in Computer science content.

At the under graduate level, there are several courses designed to meet the

emerging need of the teachers. These courses are discipline specific. These

courses are designed keeping in mind the various challenges facing the

country today from the employment sector.

After careful research, DMI-SEU has designed the courses to meet the future

needs of the country. The University strongly believes that information

technology plays a vital role in the progress of the nation.

Zambia’s Millennium Development Goals stipulate ICT as a major driver

for the development of the nation and ICT education at the school levels is

necessary for the success of these goals. Hence, there is emphasis on

imparting ICT skills to all teachers at all levels.

It is a known fact that our teachers are well trained in teaching and teaching

methodologies. They are proven in the field. Therefore, repetition of

pedagogical methods is not an expected learning for the teacher students.

The teachers require in-depth subject matter to ensure efficient teaching at

higher classes in schools. Hence the focus on the course content has been to

incorporate more of subject knowledge along with ICT knowledge.

The Fast Track Programme for upgrading the teachers will be offered on

three (3) different modes of delivery –viz., daily, week-endsand term

holidays.

Teachers form the backbone of every nation. Teachers through delivery,

needs to produce good students for the Universities and for the employers.

Hence, due attention is given here to develop the programmes to meet the

demand.

The teacher with a diploma qualification can upgrade him or herself to

bachelor degree and there by qualifies to teach higher grades.

The IVDL programme offers the various courses to suit the need of the

country. They are designed with the focus to make the teachers competent

and strong in the discipline of their choice. The course enables the employer

to deploy the teacher at appropriate teaching level relevant courses.

Our Second Year

In 2015, the success of the first fast track programme was evident when

about 1,200 self-financing in-service teachers registered for the IVDL

programme to upgrade their qualifications through the virtual mode.

The IVDL has also launched the pre-service programme for those students

who have successfully passed the Grade 12 and wish to become teachers.

The programme commenced on February 24, 2016.

The classes are conducted in the virtual and face to face mode in all the

centres in Zambia. The classes run through the year with mid course

Continuous Assessment Tests and End Semester examinations.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures act as a starting point for your own research and typically last

around 90 minutes.

The lectures are compiled by faculty who have considerable teaching

experience.

Practical classesare sometimes called ‘labs’ or laboratory classes. Practical

work on some courses may be assessed.

Independent research provides thechance to carry out your own research

for dissertations and project work. It is an opportunity to test out theories

and put forward your own ideas.

LEARNING AIDS

Tablets are small PCs or personal computers given to students after

registration and payment of the first installment of fees. The tablets can be

used to access the lessons of the fast track programme relevant for you.

Access to internet through Wi Fi is the benefit that comes with the optic

fibre networking that forms a part of virtual teaching.

Access to recording of virtual classes already conducted is possible through

the tablet – PC should you have missed a session for a reason.

Lab Manuals are documented texts for the experiments in various subjects

that are presented during practical sessions.

Text Books are the traditional study material given to each student when

you register for the course. Text books are issued each semester.

Hard and soft copy format of handoutsare extra notes given to students.

The soft copies can be accessed on the tablet PC while the hard copies can

be obtained from the respective centres.

V CAMPUS

V Campusis really the virtual blueprint of the university. It is web-based

cloud computing software. It consists of several portals that inform you

about the various aspects needed for the student from the university, such

as attendance, marks, notes for lectures,timetables and texts. This

information is uploaded regularly in e-format for easy working and

referential purposes of the students who attend the virtual mode of

learning through the fast track programme at DMI – St. Eugene University.

The advantage of V campus is that material can be accessed from any part

of world after you have registered. The uploaded information can be

accessed by students on individual tablets given to each student who

attends the programme.

ASSESSMENTS

There are two kinds of assessment. They are

Continuous Assessment Tests (CAT):

Regular class tests will be conducted during the course of programme. The

tests will be taken into account for the calculation of internal marks.

Absence in any continuous assessment test will carry ‘zero’ (0) marks for

that particular test.

Assignments:

Assignments form a component of the internal assessment of the students.

Assignments will be given for students regularly and they are expected to

submit the assignments according to the deadlines given.

Assignments will be duly evaluated and added to the internal marks. In

case of absence or non-submission of assignments, the marks will be taken

as ‘zero’ (0) for the assignment of the particular student for the particular

subject.

End-Semester Examination

This forms the second part of the assessment. There will be a final

examination after the completion of each Module. The student has to

write examination for a three hour duration covering the whole module.

GRADING &EVALUATION

The evaluation in each module of each semester comprises two

components.

(i) Continuous assessment: The candidate is assessed continuously

throughout the semester by continuous assessment tests (CAT I & II) and

assignments. This constitutes 40% of the evaluation.

(ii) End semester examination: The evaluation for the examination

constitutes 60% of the marks.

Grades A+, A, B+, B, C& F are awarded corresponding to the assessment.

Grade points of 5.0, 4.0, 3.0, 2.0 and 1.0 are awarded respectively in each

module according to the grade and the Grade Point Average (GPA) for

each semester is awarded according to the grade secured.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1. Application forms can be collected from the university or through our

website

2. The applications should be accompanied by copies of relevant

certificates.

3. Once the application has been approved, the student will be asked to

proceed for registration with a prescribed registration fee.

4. At the registration counter, present the original certificates for

verification.

5. After the registration process, the student will be asked to pay the

required semester fee.

6. Instructions will be given on the commencement of the course.

7. The registered students will have an orientation programme on the first

day of the course.

8. This is followed by the formal commencement of classes.

You should be a Grade 12 with 5 ‘O’ level credit for the degree

programmes.

Do I need work experience to take the course?

No. No prior work experience is required to undertake any course.

Do I have to be a teacher currently to take the course?

No, this is not a requirement. You could have been a teacher earlier in your

career, or you may be employed in any other profession, or you may not

be employed at all.

What is the schedule for the course?

The schedule and duration is given in this prospectus. Kindly go through it

in detail.

What are the timings of the classes?

The classes for the present course are scheduled from 8.00 hours to 17.30

hours three times a year, when the schools are closed for vacation. You can

check with the IVDL office for further details. Information for the classes

will be announced on the last day of each session.
