Turkey Give-A-Way- This is the second year our partner, Coastal Cook Trucking, sponsored the DMAB Turkey Give-A-Way. A total of 21 turkeys with fixings were given to families and seniors in the Brooklyn Community.

HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS

Peninsula Condominium Toy Drive- On December 5th, board member, Nicole Dana, along with Peninsula residents, Gabija McLauchlan and Ken Brown hosted the 3rd Annual Toy Drive to benefit the DMAB families. The event was well supported by the resident with great food. The entertainment was provided by the Josh Bowlus Jazz Trio. DMAB received numerous gift cards, toys, bicycles, clothing and stuffed animals. In addition two brand new electric guitars were given to the organization so we can offer gui-tar lessons to a child that might be interested in learning how to play. In October, a piano was also donated to the center by Vallencourt Truck-ing Company. We now have a variety of musical instruments at the center for music lessons and for use during our musical performances.

Christmas Toy Project- This project is sponsored by the American Insti-tute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Jacksonville Chapter. AIGA and its Design for Good initiative will partner with Don’t Miss a Beat to introduce illustration and the art of character design to its participants. This project kick off on October 25th-December 5th.

The project goal was to expose and expand the viewpoint of students on the importance of art. This is a soft spot for me personally. By using such a fun topic as character design, we hoped to engage this young audience. Each child created their own drawing, then partnered with an artist who brought it to life in 3D.

Each child received their toy character at the Holiday Showcase pre-show. The expressions on the kid’s faces when they saw their transition from a draw-ing to a 3D character was priceless.

2012 Holiday Showcase and Toy Drive- Our 3rd Annual Holiday Showcase & Toy Drive was a success again this year! Our program host was Dawn Lopez, Anchor Action News, did an amazing job. The evening kicked off with the guests arriving to caroling by the DMAB Chorus under the direction of Greg Speiss on the stairs of the Karpeles Museum. The program began with a beautiful dance presentation of the Nutcracker Suite choreographed by Paisley Williams and Blythe Cessac. The programmed continued with monologues titled “thankful”, the DMAB Chorus singing Christmas Carols and ended with the 20 adopted families receiving their gifts.

DMAB Reading Contest- DMAB its excited to announce first reading contest for the students enrolled in the after school programs. The “Find Your Reading Rhythm” contest

kicked off on September 1st and will run through the end of the school year. The 25 students’ names are listed on an eraser board which has a map of Florida that includes several cities and landmarks. As the students achieve their reading goals, they will move to a new city.

Our goal is to increase the reading ability of the elementary and secondary students in our after school programs. This contest will help students gain more from their reading tasks, improve their motivation and engagement in the learning process, and assist struggling readers who may need intensive and individualized attention.

As of January 1, 2013, the students have read a total of 719 books.

Juilliard Alums Embrace EntrepreneurshipBy MARGARET SHAKESPEARE

After-school programs and summer camp. Shows on stilts. Arts for the underserved. Training programs for the gifted. Theatrical dolls. Basic computer skills. Social-media marketing. Affordable high-quality instru-ments. Internet hosting services.

Niche interests? Volunteer opportunities? Side gigs? The chance to put creativity to-gether with good business practices and move into new professional territory? Yes. Yes. Yes. And, for some Juilliard alumni, a very decided yes. They are the intrepid who have taken risks, explored, experimented, and tried out ideas, then, fortified with a few deep breaths and steeled nerves, embraced what it takes to cross a career threshold—the one marked entrepreneur.

Jazz Studies grad Ulysses Owens founded a nonprofit with his family that helps provide arts education in Florida. “Juilliard taught me how to multitask in an intense environment,” Owens says. (Scott Mitchell)

“When I was in high school, I heard the term entrepreneur and associated it with a renegade—independence, crafting your own path,” says drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. (B.M. ’06, jazz studies), who, with his family, founded the nonprofit Don’t Miss a Beat in 2008 to meet the need for after-school and summer arts programs in an economically challenged neighborhood in his native Jack-sonville, Fla.

DMAB in Black Enterprise Magazine- An article about DMAB, Inc and our Artis-tic Director, Ulysses Owens, is posted on the Black Enterprise Magazine’s site. It is the third item in rotation on the home page. Here is a link to the actual story.

This magazine is for black businessmen and women, professionals and administrators dealing with all aspects of black economic development. Its articles deal with money management, industry highlights, careers and high technology. It also offers a career marketplace and a classified section. The ar-ticle will also appear in the March issue.

DMAB, Inc. was honored to be invited by the magazine to share our experience on starting a non-profit.
