Location Nerang, Gold Coast Qld.
Client – Residential.
Type of wall constructed – Vertica concrete blocks. Geogrid reinforcing.
Brief description of work completed.
Australian Retaining Walls received the call to help the owner of this Nerang, Gold Coast
Qld property transform this largely unusable sloping back yard into somewhere that is not
only practical but enjoyable too. The sheer size of the wall required and the strength it would
have to have led Australian Retaining Walls to recommend a Vertica concrete block wall
with Geogrid reinforcing. Weighing in at almost 40kg each these blocks were just what was
needed here.
See picture below.
One of the many challenges faced by Australian Retaining Walls on this Nerang, Gold Coast
Qld project was moving the large quantities of materials needed from the front of the
property to the back. Limited access meant a bobcat was needed to move all the Vertica
concrete blocks and concrete blend to the rear of the property. Later in the job our bobcat had
to return to move gravel and topsoil round to the back as well.
After heights and levels were determined with the laser A large footing (1m wide x 600mm
deep) was poured for the top wall and construction got under way. Both walls required
geogrids for extra strength but at 2.3m tall they are crucial for the top wall in particular.

Two sets of stairs were required to get down from the house to the garden shed. These would
also be built using the Vertica concrete blocks as risers and a 400mm x 400mm charcoal
paver for the treads. A 100mm pipe would be installed behind each wall for drainage along
with 20mm gravel. Australian Retaining Walls were also charged with extending and
redirecting down pipes from the house out through both walls to the bottom of the garden
were they were connected into the existing pit.
