Founded in Yokohama in 1865 by Her-mann Siber and Caspar Brennwald, the company has overcome many challenges over the course of nearly 150 years to be-come a major contributor to culture and business in Japan. Our strong roots result in our very unique way of doing business, where the cultures of Japan and Switzer-land - of Asia and Europe - harmoniously complement one another.

We have learned to steer a clear course among these two distinctive cultures, taking the best of both worlds to serve the constantly evolving needs of our busi-ness partners. Our reputation is founded on consistency in partnerships and long term engagement. We are proud of our employees who are still driven by the same pioneering spirit that inspired our founders.

Japan is a highly sophisticated and com-plex market with high entry barriers for western companies. Regardless of whether the business partner is a multinational or a medium-sized company, and no matter whether consumer goods, specialty chem-icals and ingredients for food/cosmetics, or advanced machinery are involved, our DKSH specialists know what makes Japan tick and have a deep understanding of the needs of our Japanese business partners.

At the same time, we assist Japanese companies to sell their products in the markets they wish to enter, making full use of our brand strength and compre-hensive network across both Europe and Asia. For Japanese and European companies alike, we provide the ideal mix of sourcing, marketing, brand building, sales, distribution, and after-sales services.

We are continuously enhancing our capability across the entire value chain in order to earn the trust invested in us and actively work with our business partners to expand their business for our mutual benefit.

I was born and raised in Japan, and I am very familiar with Asian culture. I feel very strongly for this country and consider it both my duty and a privilege to serve as a bridge between east and west.

I would like to thank all our business part-ners for their continued support and trust in DKSH.

1865On May 28, the industry and trade delega-tion from the Swiss Government officially arrives in Edo aboard the Dutch steamship Medusa. Accompanying the mission is 24 year old merchant Casper Brennwold

1865In a letter from London dated November 28, the establishment of Siber & Brennwald in Yokohama is announced, with capital of GBP 10,000. Brennwald names Hermann Siber as his partner.

1866Caspar Brennwald is appointed Swiss Consul in Japan and granted the right to own land by the Emperor.

1872-1874The firm helps setting up Japan’s first gas light system for Yokohama and Ginza, in co-operation with merchant Kaemon Takashima.

1888Robert Hegner von Juwalta, nephew of firm founder Hermann Siber, joins the manage-ment of Siber & Brennwald.

1900The firm’s name is changed to Siber, Wolff & Co.

1903The firm receives an award from Baron Masanao Matsudaira, President of Dai Nihon Silk Yarn Industry, for its achievements in Japan’s silk yarn industry.

1906-1921The firm’s name changes to Siber Hegner &

1932The firm is reorganized as a stock company. The headquarter is moved to Zurich, Switzer-land.

1941-1945Asian trade comes to a standstill during World War II. SiberHegner managers in China and Japan act as representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). In Japan, the ICRC’s headquarter is located in the main SiberHegner office from 1944 to 1994.

1964SiberHegner Holding Ltd. is established in Zu-rich. The group is restructured, with branches in the Far East region becoming independent corporations over the next year.

140 years of progress in JapanSince its inception, DKSH Japan’s develop-ment has been closely connected with the history of Japan. Hermann Siber and Caspar Brennwald founded their trading company in Yokohama in 1865, when they were young men in their twenties. Their company seat, Yokohama Ko 90-ban Kan, conveniently named after its address, soon established itself as the heart of Japan’s silk trading activities. The company later went on to help set up the gas light

system for Yokohama and Ginza, and also began importing watches and machinery from leading Swiss manufacturers. It was renamed Siber Hegner & Co. in 1910. Its reputation as a trading company grew rapidly despite several setbacks: a ware-house fire, several wars, and the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. The company’s survival is indeed testimony to its resilience and adaptability. The firm entered a new era in 1932, when the company’s head-quarter was moved from Yokohama to

Zurich, Switzerland. SiberHegner Holding Ltd. continued to grow, opening branches throughout the world and becoming an important player in key markets. On the occasion of the company’s 100th anniver-sary in 1965, it was formally incorporated in Japan as Nihon SiberHegner K.K. After becoming part of DKSH Group in 2002, the company changed its name to DKSH Japan K.K. in April 2009.

at the time, which was conducted mainly in German but also in French, English, Italian, and Dutch. Historical records of Yokohama in early Meiji are rare as most of the related documents written by foreigners were destroyed by war or fire. The Brennwald diaries are precious piece of the historic record, describing first-hand the change of society witnessed in the Edo and Meiji era.

Disaster restoration support and volunteer activityDKSH believes that supporting community recovery from natural disaster and com-munity volunteerism are important ways to be a responsible company. When the earthquake and tsunami occurred in December 2004, DKSH helped rebuild an elementary school which was seriously damaged by the tsunami. We also donat-ed educational materials and equipment such as electric fans and sport gear to affected elementary schools in Thailand. In Myanmar, DKSH Group has been spon-soring humanitarian projects to support the area devastated by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008. DKSH employees from Japan and around the world voluntary donated toward this project. In Japan, after the East Japan Great Earthquake of March

2011, employees volunteered their time to help the restoration of their community. Some of the employees cleaned debris, while others helped rebuild the damaged fishery facility in Tohoku area. DKSH Japan supported this work by granting compas-sionate leave to employees who wanted to volunteer.

DKSH Fantree ScholarshipDKSH Japan K.K. has established the DKSH Fantree Scholarship Foundation to help students who lost their parents con-tinue their academic pursuits. The fund was established through generous dona-tions contributed by DKSH employees in 35 countries, with matching donations from the DKSH Group and from Diethelm Keller Holdings.

With support from the prefectural governmental office and high school principals committee, DKSH Japan started the scholarship in the summer of 2011. This scholarship covers monthly payments for sponsored students’ high school and university attendance, for a maximum period of seven years. In addition to the monetary support, we maintain a close relationship and dialogue with our spon-sored students.

Corporate responsibility

DKSH Japan contributes to Japanese society in a variety of ways, ranging from contributing to the historical studies of Japan to supporting the restoration activities following the Great East Japan Earthquake. Our mission is to give back to society as part of the local community.

The Brennwald diariestranslation projectCaspar Brennwald was a co-founder of DKSH Japan. The Brennwald diaries con-sist of 548 pages in five volumes, and cov-er the day-to-day events of a 16 year peri-od of his stay in Japan - from October 10, 1862, to February 2, 1878. The original manuscript and related materials are held by the families of the company founders in Switzerland and in the Swiss Federal Ar-chives.

Close collaboration with the Yokohama Archives of HistoryWorking with the cooperation of the Yokohama Archives of History (located in Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Pref.),

the Yokohama Archives of History DKSH Japan have been engaged in a project to translate the Brennwald diaries in their entirety into Japanese. As the birthplace of the company, Yokohama has always been special to DKSH, and by doing this we hope to return something to the city.

With its completion, the Japanese translation of Brennwald diaries will not only be a record of DKSH’s history, but also reveal significant historical facts about early modern Japan, including details regarding Yokohama’s time of first contact to the western world.

The project was launched on Janu-ary, 2008. The translation project team includes eleven historians.

Japanese history highlighted in diariesCaspar Brennwald arrived in Japan at the young age of 24, as Secretary of Com-merce with the first official Swiss industry and trade delegation. Yokohama had just opened its port to foreign trade and was becoming a hub of commerce. The diaries cover the construction of modern factories

for the silk industry and the setting up of a gas company for the gas light system.

The diary also offers insights into the cosmopolitan nature of correspondence
