Change is apparently the essence of life and we must learn to accept it or perish from within. The car club is now facing that challenge. We will need to fi ll board positions with new members to help it grow into the future. In this issue you will see a list of board spots available and a description of duties attached. Now of the time for folk who are interested in growing the club to step up and fi ll a very important role for the club. Interested? Just please indicate your interest to the Nominating Committee. Their address is in the article entitled “Chapter Board Nominations Now Open”on page 6.

We are starting to see new faces at club events. That is a good thing. The task for any new leadership will be to create new ways for people to participate in club activities. Perhaps we should open a prize

pool to be distributed to the members who attend the most events.

As most of you know we have not put on a driving school this season. The main impediment is the lack of a suitable location. We are now trying to nail down dates now for next year. As I have discuss before we need people to help us work on some of these issues, so if you have time please give us a call.

We are putting on a Street Survival program on September 22nd for young and new (regardless of age) drivers. The event details appear in this newsletter. Consider this our call for volunteer instuctors, registrars and cone shaggers. If you have a new driver in your household this is a great program.

The ongoing success of a Chapter depends on the desire and willingness of the Offi cers to contribute their time and effort. It is absolutely necessary that the Club offi cers be as capable and as dedicated as can be found. The criteria must be capability to perform and willingness to serve.

President

• Presides over all meetings, prepares the agenda, and directs the discussion.

• Acts as an ex-offi cio member of all standing committees and temporary committees except the nominating committee;

• Executes all documents and correspondence in the name of the Chapter as authorized by the membership or the chapter Board.

• Signs or co-signs Chapter checks. • Responsible to ensure that all required

reports be submitted to the National Offi ce within the require time frames.

• Maintains the chapter’s copy of the BMW CCA Operations Manual.

• Responsible to ensure that corporation reports are fi led on time.

Vice President

• Acts in the place of the President during his or her absence or when so required by the President.

• Assists the President and/or the chapter Board in any manner that they may directs.

Secretary

• Records and preserves the minutes of Chapter business and board meetings; presents and reads such minutes at the request of the President.

• Prepares necessary correspondence for the Chapter when required.

Activities Director/Event Coordinator

The most common chapter activities include tours and rallies, driving schools, autocrosses, picnics, parties, tech sessions, trips, go-karting, and charity fundraisers, but BMW CCA chapters are known for inventing new and different ways to enjoy their vehicles, their club, and their friends.

• Primary responsibility is for planning, organizing, and supervising the staging chapter events and activities.

• Appoints members or recruits volunteers to take care of portions of each event. Keeps records of these events and how well they succeed.

• Responsible for fi nancially structuring the entry fees for events in such a way that the Chapter costs (including insurance and any plaques or trophies) are covered with a small profi t. (Growth of the chapter rather than profi t is the goal)

• All costs for an activity must be included in computing the fi nal entry fees. These include insurance, postage, telephone calls, publicity, supplies, and any rental of equipment.

• Arranges to receive merchandise, trophies or awards as donations from local merchants or car shops, the cost of the event should still be structured as though they were paid for. This will provide continuity from one event to another as well as reward the Chapter fi nancially for the efforts.

• Advertising can also be sold during the event in the form of sponsorships or the placing of manufacturer’s decals or posters.

11 das Kummet - September • October 2007 www.tidewaterbmwcca.org

I just recently had the pleasure of purchasing a 2004 330Ci from Rob Collins at Casey BMW. Sadly, I traded my beloved 1991 318is, a car I’ve owned since 1995. Before that, I had a 1972 2002Tii which I bought new. Obviously I keep my Bimmers or a long time! Dealing with Rob was a very pleasant experience; he is a true enthusiast and immediately recognized the same in me. Anyone considering buying a new or used BMW would do themselves a favor to allow Rob to work with them; I recommend him highly.

I’ve been a member of this club since 1971 and can remember when we celebrated having more than 30 members. We struggled to build membership in those early years and for the longest time were stagnated at around 130 members. Then something happened and our membership started a growth spurt that has not abated to this day. That “something” was a decision by the management at Casey BMW to include a one year membership in BMW CCA with every BMW they sell, new or used.

This has resulted in a chapter that seems to keep growing and growing; all you have to do is look at the long list of new members in each issue of “das Kummet” to see the impact of this policy. Sure, some of the growth is due to the efforts of you and me to recruit members, but in reality it’s mostly new Casey BMW customers that fuel the growth.

I would like to personally thank Casey BMW for this very generous policy of providing membership in BMW CCA to all of their customers. I’m no longer an offi cer in the club, but having held literally every elected and appointed offi ce in the past, including many years as President, I feel I can speak for the entire chapter in offering Casey BMW a hearty THANK YOU for supporting us for many years.

das Kummet - September • October 2007 www.tidewaterbmwcca.org 13

Recently, while working on one of my client’s homes, one of the other contractors said to me out of the blue, “Have you ever heard of a BMW Isetta?” “Excuse me...did you say ‘BMW Isetta’?” I replied. The funny thing is that out of all the people in the Tidewater area he could talk to about the Isetta, he asked me; the classics chairman for the BMW CCA Tidewater Chapter. And amazingly, I wasn’t even wearing a car shirt that day. “I know where one is. Would you like to see it?” he asked. What fortune!

After a couple weeks of trying to negotiate a day to visit the car and take some pictures, we fi nally had an opportunity to go during a lunch break. Driving through front entrance gates and meandering through tall trees down a storybook drive, we came to a 1930’s cottage overlooking the water. (My wife and I love cottages, so for a second I actually forgot about the Isetta. Ack!) The property has several outbuildings and as we walked past them, I couldn’t help sneaking a peek at the contents of some – license plates, old signs and all kinds of stuff a patina-lover likes to see.

And then – we rounded a corner and there was the Isetta - all covered up like a little Halloween ghost. When we pulled off the cover, it was like 1956 all over again – a new BMW model being unveiled. Except for the missing hubcaps (they were in the barn), the little cutie was all original and in remarkable condition. Complete with

vintage travel stickers inside the front door, this little guy was right out of the 60s. The only really non-original items were the red-painted wheels. Even the blue-and-white repaint on the body didn’t look bad, and kept the car looking original. It was a thrill to see, and after taking lots of pictures we completed our mission by moving the car safely back into its barn. As we parted ways with the Isetta, I couldn’t help but think about the little car and the day when the sun would shine on

him again. Hidden treasure.

Changing gears a little (a bit of mechanical humor there), equally exciting is unexpectedly fi nding someone who shares your love of old cars. Our family was recently at a reunion of my wife’s high school friends when we discovered, completely by accident, that one of her old friends has a 2002 (!) in addition to just about every other BMW I’ve always wanted (Hi, Dave). It’s probably a good thing we didn’t realize this until the party was almost over or we would have been talking cars for four hours straight. Finding people that share my passion for old BMWs is as exciting to me as fi nding an heretofore undiscovered vehicle. Hidden treasure.

Keeping your eyes and ears open for opportunities to discover forgotten cars or bond with fellow BMW passionistas is a part of the grand adventure.

Enjoy the ride.

Our Annual Oyster and Pig Roast will once again be held at John and Dana’s house where for the past years we have had some very memorable feasts. The fare this year will include Eastern Shore Seaside oysters and John’s famous barbequed pork shoulders. Ummm, I can’t wait! Lunch will also include side dishes, deserts and non-alcoholic beverages (you may of course bring your own). The change this year will be that the side dishes will be provided by the Chapter.

The cost to attend this event is $5.00 or 5 lbs of canned goods to benefi t the Foodbank

of Southeastern Virginia. Our goal this year is 300 lbs of

food of which we have already collected 180 lbs. So let’s give our designated charity donation a big boost and see how close we

can get to that goal.

Please RSVP Bob Parsons at 587-7423. or activities@

Attendance is limited.

What do you do on a really nice day in July? You get into your BMW and head out for Williamsburg, Virginia to participate in a car rally. The meeting point for this venture was at the Marriot Hotel at Kings Mill. While the number of people participating in this year’s event was fewer than last year, those attending were eager to head out and meet the challenge. Last year’s champions, Rick and Bev George, were all smiles as they left the starting point knowing that if all went well in a couple of hours they would again capture the fi rst place trophy.

The route took the group through some of the most scenic areas throughout the Peninsula ending up at the rustic Hog Wild

Smokehouse in Toano. Once again Rick and Bev George

(photo: top center) fi nished in fi rst place. Once everyone got to the Smokehouse, we were greeted by Jim Waldeck

and Anita Britt, who had made all the

arrangements for this year’s adventure.

The Tidewater Chapter in conjunction with the BMW Car Club of America Foundation will host another Street SurvivalTM Teen Driving School on Saturday September 22nd at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious base. The school will start at 8 am and will run to around 4 pm.

The school is open to licensed or learner permitted teen drivers, at least 16 years old, and will teach them fundamentals of emergency driving techniques in their own cars, such as: skid control, brake and avoid, and car control in a panic stop situation. Training is done in a controlled environment with both in-class and in-car instruction.

Street Survival was started by the BMW Car Club of America Foundation as a way to offer affordable driving instruction to young drivers. The aim is to give these new drivers the opportunity to understand how their actions govern a car’s response. The program allows them to make mistakes and learn from them in a controlled environment. This learning plan helps them become safer drivers.

Lunch will be provided for you. The Navy MWR group will have burgers, hot dogs, and chips for us. The Chapter will provide the drinks. If you have special dietary needs, you may want to bring your own food/snacks.

Little Creek is an active military base and security procedures will be in effect. Everyone; drivers, parents, and workers, will need to be on the access list. The access list will close at 8 p.m. Wednesday before the event (19 September) and will be transmitted to Base Security on Thursday. We must

remember at all times that we are guests of the US Navy and MUST be on our best behavior.

Please pass the word around for this very benefi cial program to help our young drivers learn good skills and safety techniques.

And with that said, we can always use instructors and volunteers for the event. If you are a Chapter instructor please contact me to help out. Volunteers contact me also, you guys make it happen.

The last Street Survival event was in 2005 and a big success. A number of testimonials came back to me within a few weeks! I’d say it was a timely event.
