Reader’s FeedbackWe’re always happy to hear from our you! Opinions, stories, comments, feedback and suggestions from our readers are what made DJ what it is today.

Ms. Enas and the DJ Team,Good day and Mabuhay! What a heart warming issue you have for this month. Yes its very important to honor our mom and celebrate mother’s day and do something special for them. But i believe mother’s day must not be celebrated only once a year but everyday of the year. Lets all be reminded that our mother gave us the most significant gift in this wold, and that is what we called LIFE!A Loving Son,Gary A. Ayuste

Dear DJ,I wanted to tell you that you people are doing a great job bringing out the real beauty of Jeddah. I was always in love with Jeddah, but my heart caught a new sight of it since I started reading your magazine.Sahil A.

Dear DJ,I wanted you to know that I really enjoyed reading your magazine during my brief visit to Jeddah. I used it as my city guide!! I imagine that even as a local, I would still find it useful! Great Job! Alexia

The definition of an emergency is any situation which poses an immediate risk to life or property – a situation which requires urgent action. Your best chance of surviving an emergency unscathed is to be prepared. One easy solution is to keep a first aid kit in your car…it may sit unopened for years, but the one time you need it will be the time you thank God for your foresight. Here’s a quick list of first aid essentials to stock your kit: flashlight, blanket, water bottle, whistle, reflective warning sign, bandages, gauze and medical tape, tweezers, antiseptic ointment, cotton balls, tissues, aspirin, instant ice pack, and last but not least, a first aid instruction manual. A pen and pad of paper are also handy in an emergency for taking down instructions or directions.

Useful Information

Page 7: DJ Issue 27

Clean water, clean air, clean food - we’re all concerned with cleanliness in our daily lives. But what happens when we step outside of our homes and are confronted with trash on our streets or in our children’s parks? The street cleaners hired by the municipality are underpaid and under-supervised, with the result that they are constantly searching for other sources of income, which is understandable under the circumstances. However this results in them neglecting the job for which they have been hired...trash continues to litter our streets and parks. DJ is inspired to raise this topic in the hopes that community leaders will address these ongoing concerns.

The current anti-littering campaign highlights the responsibilities of all Jeddahwis to put trash where it belongs…in the trashcan. Cleaners employed by the municipality are charged with the job of street and park maintenance, no matter which neighborhood they’re deployed in – they should not be bribed or tipped in order for them to complete the job for which they’ve been hired. Supervisors should be vigilant in ensuring that the daily assignments of their team are completed to a high standard in order to fulfill the contract which the municipality has tendered.

We look to Jeddah’s municipality to examine the current situation and do their utmost to raise the bar in this regard. Firm action is needed to implement immediate improvements in ALL of Jeddah’s streets and neighborhoods.

the presence of beggars in Jeddah

Fitaihi jewelry

Thumbs down to...

Beggars are a reality of life in cities around the world. Their existence can be a result of several factors: socio-economics, demographics, underdevelopment, corruption, poor governance, organized crime etc. or none of the above. People emigrate from poor countries to wealthy countries in order to improve their lives and lives of their children. This flow is impossible to completely prevent. So what is the solution? Jeddah, as the gateway to Islam’s two holiest cities, holds a unique status which unfortunately results in an inordinate number of underprivileged visitors who outstay their visas. Some of these people are reduced to begging on Jeddah’s streets for their survival. As sad as their situation is, as often as generous Jeddahwis open their wallets…it is ultimately up to the municipality to humanely deal with this issue. They regularly repatriate illegal residents, but more must be done to reduce both the numbers of beggars and their continued presence on Jeddah’s streets.

The Fitaihi Jewelry line is a hallmark of their dedication to excellence. From their humble origins in 1887 as silversmiths in Makkah to one of Jeddah’s leading luxury retailers today, the Fitaihi family has proven their acumen in business. However it is their progressive move in 2003 of exclusively hiring women (as managers and employees) for their retail jewelry outlet in KSA which earns a Thumbs Up. Women are entering the workforce in greater numbers than ever before – they are intelligent, hard-working, and enthusiastic – they just need the opportunity to prove themselves. Let’s hope more companies follow the Fitaihi lead…especially retailers of lingerie, beauty products, and women’s clothing/accessories!

Thumbs up to...

Page 10: DJ Issue 27

You’re settled in your job, your apartment, and your life. The money is coming in and all is well…but wait - you do remember that you have monthly bills to pay, right? All those niceties which you’re enjoying like electricity, water, satellite TV, telephone and even a car – all these services have a fee associated with them, just like in any other country of the world. Luckily, there are several options where bill-paying is concerned to make your life easier, so read on

. Pay in Person

. Online Banking

. Pay at ATM

. Use SADAD Payment System

The Basics of

Bill$ By Dilara Hafiz

Pay in Person is pretty self-explanatory. You visit each individual utility office in order to pay your bills in person. This method is obviously the most time-consuming as it requires trips to offices all over town, with the hassles of battling traffic, prayer time closings, unfamiliarity with navigating each office etc.Verdict: NOT RECOMMENDED

Online Banking is a convenient, computerized approach to bill-paying which many people will already be familiar with based upon their home country’s practices. This method allows you to deal with bills in the privacy of your own home. It may take time to set up the initial payments, but once that’s done, then you can arrange for the bills to be paid automatically each month without having to lift a finger. But of course you must ensure that there are sufficient funds in your bank account to cover your monthly expenses.Verdict: RECOMMENDED

Readers’ Settling In Adventures

Do you have a ‘Settling In’ adventure to share with our readers? Help newcomers avoid the faux-pas you may have made as they adjust to life in Jeddah. Language barriers, rules of the road, cultural missteps...they’re all funny in retrospect. Send in your tales to DJ and we’ll republish them here in an upcoming issue. E-mail: [email protected] with the Title: Settling In

.My dear Grandfather came to visit me in Jeddah recently, (he is 83 years old and has a long, white beard.) When we visited the big vegetable market, suddenly a Saudi security guard appeared and grabbed my Grandfather’s hand, touched his shoulder and started gently talking to him in Arabic! Several other people approached him and behaved exactly the same way...we were very surprised by this behavior until a Saudi friend told us that these people thought that he was an important Imam or Sheikh from abroad!!Sandy Gisler. It happened a year ago during my third day of stay here in Jeddah. I went to the nearest store from our villa to buy something to eat. When it was my turn to pay i asked the cashier how much do i have to give. He grabbed the food, looked at me and said ‘’SITA’’.Worried, confused, and blushing, I grab the vacant chair next to him and politely SIT. A young little boy approached me while laughing and said,’’ sadik, he was just asking you for six riyals sita means six’’.Still blushing, I walked back home practicing basic arabic counting from 1-10.The Blushing Shopper,Gary Ayuste

Pay at ATM is a quick and easy method of paying your bills when you’re at an ATM machine withdrawing money. Just click on ‘Other Services’ and then select ‘Bill Payment’. A directory of common utilities will appear and you click on the bills you want to pay. You must have your account number or bill number handy in order to complete these transactions, so clearly you need to think ahead and carry your paper bills with you at all times.Verdict: NOT REALLY RECOMMENDED

The SADAD Payment System is a relatively new, centralized system which seeks to facilitate the payment of bills using a variety of means: ATM, online banking, phone banking, and branch banking. You can set up all your payments through their website http://www.sadad.com/English/SADAD+SERVICES/PayBills/

It’s self-explanatory and nationwide, plus includes all the major banks in KSA in order to expedite transfers and payments by individuals and businesses. Electronic bill paying is here to stay and SADAD makes it easy to do so, whether you bank at the branch where you pay your bills is no longer relevant. E-bill paying saves time and money – it’s the smart way to conduct commerce.Verdict: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Social event innovators Fainak recently organized an incredible event - The Equestrian Festival at the Al-Aseel Club. The festival spanned two evenings full of stage performances, booths, family activities, and civil society initiatives; over 3000 visitors were engaged and entertained beyond their wildest dreams. Sponsored by Saudi Airlines, but the brain-child of the visionaries at Fainak, this fun festival proves what is possible when a passionate, talented, and committed team of young people decides to be the change they want to see in the world.

Jeddah’s clearly full of talented performers…including Waheed Michel, an impressive Michael Jackson impersonator with all the right moves, a 10-member, hip-hop dance group from Makkah called West Side Soldiers, a guitarist all the way from Damam, and even a magician who performed jaw-dropping magic tricks. A wrestling team gave wonderful simulations of ‘Monster’ wrestling matches. One of the highlights of the talent show was Taneen Jeddah (Jeddah’s Dragon), the fire eater, who gave a daring, fire eating performance. The enthusiastic audience spread their blankets on the ground and enjoyed the evening’s entertainment while the cool breezes off the coast ensured comfortable

temperatures for the duration of the festival. Judging by the calls of “Encore! Encore!”, Jeddah’s entertainment scene will definitely be showcasing some of these performers at future events!

There was so much to see and do at the festival, from the variety of food vendors filling the air with the tempting aromas of shawarmas, popcorn, and maneesh…to the lavish kids’ entertainment activities including jumping castles, face painting, pony rides, and arts and crafts tables. The ‘Princess Walk’ corner was popular amongst little girls – they had the chance to dress up in fancy dresses and tiaras and walk around the festival, ending up on stage for their ‘Princess Walk’. A big hit of the event was 10 year-old Dana Natto who debuted her ‘Dana Art’ arts and craft business to the public – she proves that you’re never too young to start your own business.

There was also a tattoo corner for willing audience members, as well as graffiti artists who painted a huge board in a wonderful display of live art. The Jeddah Dance Crew, a well-loved, local dance crew, and Jeddah Fam J-Fam, one of the best hip hop and R&B bands, entertained the crowds with their unique sounds. A used book corner, where proceeds went to Mawakib Alajir, and a used items corner, where proceeds went to the Cancer Society, were opportunities for people interested

in making useful purchases which would benefit those less fortunate members of society. The ever popular Bazaar section had an interesting variety of products on offer as well, from clothing, jewelry, and custom made t-shirts, edible goodies such as cupcakes and crepes.

The festival would not have been possible without the help of several volunteer groups – thanks to ‘Change Your Life’ and Lil-Meastro, and the volunteers from Jeddah Knowledge School. Naqa’a thoughfully provided recycling bins to encourage green habits naturally and easily. Events such as this are great opportunities to recognize and reward talent in all its many forms – from onstage to behind the stage. It takes dedication and hard work to pull off such a successful event. Two thumbs up to Fainak! Jeddah is looking forward to more events like this.

Jeddah hosted the first ‘Twestival’ – literally a ‘Twitter Festival’, a growing, global, social media event which combines information, entertainment, and fund-raising in one event. It took place at Bridges Café & Library on March 24, 2011 and was attended by people from all walks of life including charitable societies, educationalists, academic students, marketing figures, media representatives, and entrepreneurs . Twestival events are 100% organized by local volunteers in cities around the world and 100% of the money raised from these events goes directly to support local charities.

The four dynamic speakers were Maha Taher, head of media relations at The Society of Majid Bin Abdul-Aziz for Development and Social Services, Hani Sabbagh, a social media expert, the marketing and communication expert, Ziad Jarrar and marketing guru, Said Aghil Baaghil.

According to Maria Mahdaly, the organizing supervisor of the event, “The Jeddah Twestival was only approved by the founder Amanda Rose less than a month ago. She said that she is very proud that the volunteers in Saudi Arabia could manage to successfully organize both the Jeddah and Riyadh Twestivals in such a short time.” Maria added, “I would like to thank all who have taken part in making this global event for fund raising successful and in turn brought it to the limelight in the Kingdom.”

The speakers highlighted the various issues surrounding the use of social media in the public sphere – either for spotlighting humanitarian causes, encouraging communication, or even potentially political usage. The event ended with an open discussion where speakers fielded questions from the audience and offered their input on the future of social networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The Twestival would not have been possible without the help of generous sponsors such as Twitemail, TDA, STC, Fainak, and Destination Jeddah. In addition, video sponsors Flip Video gave away 2 Minos, plus KAI GYM gave away 5 free one-month memberships.

Have you ever sampled the many different kinds of coffee from the Middle East and Africa…all in one visit? Coffee from Saudi’s Western, Eastern and Central regions, along with coffees from Yemen, Sudan, Palestine, and Ethiopia were all available for sampling and purchase at the Coffee Week Festival held at the Westin Hotel. Organized by the JCCI, hundreds of coffee aficionados thronged the booths and enjoyed the cultural displays of folkloric shows, traditional dances, and competitions.

Coffee Week Festival

According to Salima, an Ethiopian lady who was cooking traditional Ethiopian coffee, “We boil the coffee in a big kettle for ten minutes and serve it without sugar in the mornings and afternoons.” Sudanese coffee, sometimes called ‘Al Jabana’ is prepared in a totally different manner. The ground beans are put in a special pot called a ‘Sharagrag’. Ginger is added and the mixture is slowly cooked as the hot water is added gradually. Fatimah, a Sudanese expatriate participant, said, “The coffee maker usually sings traditional songs as he cooks the coffee.”

Saleha, a Saudi lady from Makkah, talked about the special ‘Makkawi’ coffee called “Almond Coffee” which is only made and known in the Makkah region. “We add the medium roast ground coffee to milk, sugar, ginger, almond and cardamom,” she said. The Saudi ‘blonde’ coffee is popular across regions; however, the coffee in the Eastern area is little different because it is boiled with saffron. Coffee connoisseurs delight in coffee celebrations such as these where the aroma of fine blends mingles with the sounds of the coffee drinker’s sips of pleasure from the delicious black drink they covet on a daily basis.

The Linjawi residence has been hosting a charity garage sale since 2007. This effort is part yard sale and part charity drive and 100% about giving back to children who suffer from cancer.

Charity Garage

Sale

“This is a brilliant way to urge people to clean their houses and see what they don’ t need anymore and donate it to people who might need it,” said Lamia Al-Yafi, coordinator of the garage sale. “Organizing a garage sale is like blending a social/fun activity and doing good at the same time,” she added. “The idea was my friend, Niveen Linjawi’s idea, she is driven by the passion to help other people in a creative way.”

The yard sale contains second hand items ranging from handbags (designer brands and non-designer brands), women’s accessories, sunglasses, toys, books and magazines, CDs and DVDs and home accessories. “We never sell shoes or clothing for hygiene reasons,” said Al-Yafi. “All proceeds from the sale are donated to Al-Eman Cancer Society.” They are the umbrella which allows those involved with the garage sale to reach children suffering from cancer, therefore raising awareness and encouraging social responsibility.

This event unites people together for a good cause. “It’s about letting people have the opportunity to actually get involved and do something productive for the community,” said Al-Yafi. “We also aim to teach people how to recycle, reduce and reuse through

this sale because obviously, people are buying things that were previously owned by others, so nothing goes to waste. This shows that it’s 100% beneficial to both the society and the cancer society.”

Doctor, Administrator, Writer, Public Speaker, Interfaith Bridge-Builder…these labels all describe Dr. Walid Fitaihi, founder of the International Medical Center (IMC) in Jeddah, but perhaps the moniker which he is most proud of is simply ‘Muslim’. He attributes his personal and professional success to God’s blessings; ultimately he is guided by the desire to please his Creator.

Jeddah’s Who’sWho

Dr. Fitaihi combines his faith with his leadership to form a powerful base from which he envisions a bright future for not only his city, but for the global community at large. An exemplary student who distinguished himself from his early days as a student in the US, he graduated first in his class (Magna Cum Laude) from George Washington University, followed by a medical degree which gave him the honor of being the first Saudi national to earn an M.D. from the US. He is board certified in Internal Medicine as well as Endocrinology and Diabetes, as well as the holder of a Master’s of Public Health in Health Policy and Management from Harvard School of Public Health, USA.

As Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of IMC, Dr. Fitaihi’s vision is “To pioneer a unique approach of healing the body, mind and soul by applying the best global healthcare standards and pursuing divine ethics.” To enhance the establishment of centers of excellence in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Fitaihi believes that IMC and future projects must set the right examples and make sure that these examples are clear and loud through perfecting them as modules of efficiency and excellence. A visitor to Jeddah’s IMC will not fail to be impressed by the attention paid to the patient, by the overall quality of care provided by

“However, I believe that one’s true achievement is actually in his relations to others: his relation to His Creator, his relations to people close to him, and to all human beings around him” says Dr. Fitaihi. “Only then we are able to be the change we want to see in the world around us.”

every member of staff, and by the ethos of excellence which proves that a paradigm shift in healthcare service is achievable in Saudi Arabia…it only requires vision and the dedication of people such as Dr. Fitaihi.

Aspiring to serve Islam while in the US, Dr. Fitaihi took great pleasure in spending time engaged in interfaith dialogue in churches, synagogues, schools and universities after 9/11. He spearheaded programs to serve the communities in which he resided, as well as served on the Board of a new Islamic Society in Boston, Massachusetts. “ISB is a unique project. It’s a cultural center in all senses of the word. It has a school, a mosque, an interfaith center, and a media center. I felt the need to build bridges between the two cultures and I was able to see the beauty of all cultures I’ve been to. In the US, I spent a good amount of time trying to practice the concept in Islam which is “So you get to know each other.”

My Trip toMadain Saleh & Yanbu with DiveXtreme

DiveXtreme, a group of local Jeddah diving instructors and natural adventurers, recently put together a weekend trip to the ancient site of Madain Saleh, followed by a day of diving off the coast at Yanbu. It was a whirlwind of excitement, visual awe, ancient sights, and magnificent diving.

Day 1: Our multi-national group left in a car caravan, destination: The Radisson Blu at Yanbu. We were all a flurry of excitement until, about an hour and a half in to the trip, one of the cars died on the side of the highway outside of Thuwal. Mild panic from some of the ladies ensued upon being seemingly stranded in the middle of the night on a dark Saudi highway...but about 10 minutes later, the solution was found. Fuse Box. Reconnected. No problem.

We reached the industrial town of Yanbu at about 9:30 pm Wednesday night, and were immediately struck by the almost eerie, futuristic glow of the gargantuan Aramco complex which accounts for not only half of the city’s size, but also for most of its economy. As we left the glow of the lights of the oil drums behind, old Yanbu greeted us with a feeling of serenity - more apropos of a small port town. Thamer Habis, our friend, driver, and leader of the group, pointed out some Yabu landmarks and gave us a mini-history of the town he grew up in.

We arrived at the posh Radisson Blu and immediately dove into the savory outdoor buffet that awaited us tired group of road-trippers. Excellent food, especially for a small town hotel. Thumbs up to the Radisson in Yanbu!

Day 2: After a 6am wake up, we loaded up to depart for another 4-hour leg to our anticipated destination: Madain Saleh, just on the outskirts of the ancient town of Al Ula. Shaking the tiredness off as the sun came over the rocky dunes, we got an up close look at some great sights: remote Bedouin society, rich palm tree gardens contrasting picturesquely against red rock mountains, and of course, the inevitable wild camels strolling across the road. But all this was just an appetizer.

Pulling up to the archaeological preserve of Madain Saleh, the guards checked our ID’s carefully as Madain Saleh has been prone

to break ins by illegal treasure hunters and archaeologists in the past. When the gates opened and we entered, my eyes immediately widened in wonder. The place was expansive! Highly reminiscent of the American SouthWest - but painted by the colors of an ancient world gone by.

Some 2600 years old, Madain Saleh was built as the last settlement of the Nabateans, after the sister town of Petra in modern day Jordan to the north. To complement the size of Madain Saleh are the 40-plus ancient homes carved into the gigantic sandstone cliffs. These were truly incredible to see. Looming grand facades stood as the doorways to each house, decorated with perfectly symmetrical design of everything from pillars, to arches, to architecturally perfect step designs - all painstakingly carved into the rock face!

And as you step through the immaculately carved doorways into the dimly lit houses of old, one can truly feel the history. Some people even say the place is haunted, and I can believe it. I half expected Indiana Jones to come strolling out at any minute…such was the ancient atmosphere of the place. Madain Saleh: it is as grand as it is mythical.

Day 3: We took off the next day from Al-Ahlam Marina just as the morning sun started to heat up, heading out in two boats for the hour’s ride to the Iona wreck. I was stoked, as this was my first wreck dive! The wreck was massive, some 20 meters in length, and just as deep. Some of the more advanced divers descended to the dark depths while I - still the resident newbie - had to content myself with tooling around the upper deck. But just seeing the mass and size of the thing, in addition to spotting a few beautiful Parrot and Clown fish, was thrill enough for me.

PS: The first time I met Thamer was outside of the Red Sea Divers shop on King Abdulaziz St. He was smiling, smoking a cigarette, and wearing a shirt that read: “I’ve been single, married, and divorced. Now I just dive.” I immediately thought, “This is my kind of guy!” As he showed me into the shop to begin training, I was immediately impressed with his demeanour of warm professionalism - a characteristic that I’ve seen him continue to display as we have embarked on several great group dive trips over the past few weeks. Thanks Thamer!

Shellatna: Our Group…Our Voice

By Rima Al-Mukhtar

Launched in 2009, Shellatna is a show made especially for young Saudis between 15 and 25 currently airing on Al-Aan Channel. Shellatna in means “Our Group” – this youth-focused-show is presented by a group of ten Saudi young men and women who aim to broadcast their voices to the local Saudi community and then to the whole world.

Each of the young TV presenters discusses a specific topic according to his/her knowledge. Terad, one of Shellatna’s presenters says, “Our team is trained for the purpose of speaking without fear or hesitation, expressing our opinions, and different point of views, as well as, the opinion of the public, especially the youth generation.” Shellatna’s main topics are the issues and obstacles that Saudis face growing up. The hosts try to encourage honest and bold opinions with possible solutions. “The show’s diversity juggles between fashion, design, make-up, music, movies, and culture, to an opposite extreme, such as, cars, race, sport, video games and travel,” says Haneen, another Shellatna host. So far, Shellatna have aired 83 episodes, plus some special episodes aired in response to events like Jeddah’s floods, Saudi National Day and other events held in Jeddah, Riyadh and Saudi’s Eastern region.

All ten presenters are Saudis, which makes them emotionally and mentally closer to their target audience. “As part of Saudi society, we know exactly what the youth are looking for. This way we talk about everything they want to hear, say, and discuss, and give the youth a free space to express their feelings, interests and deliver their voice to the community,” said Amal, Shellatna’s presenter. Social media plays an important role in Shellatna’s show as it connects the show’s presenters to the public. “The facebook fan page reached over 17,000 members. The majority of them are active and are constant supportors of the show,” said Salma, Shellatna’s presenter. “We have opened a window for them to share their feelings, opinions, and thoughts without fear of objection or rejection.”

A non-profit-based organization started by Sonja Svensek; PIN is on a mission to spread the message of ethical treatment towards animals and to help re-home them in better shelters. Sonja tired of hearing pet abuse stories, so she decided to do something to make a difference. “In 2008, it became clear to me that people needed to be informed about the responsibilities involved in treating an animal, taking care of a pet and their options if they could no longer care for their pet, ‘’ says Sonja. She contacted veterinary clinics in Jeddah and went on photography missions to take pictures of the animals that were left there, homeless and abused. PIN’s facebook group started posting their own pictures along with information of petsthey had or knew that needed help.

PIN is not only targeted at those who own animals, on the contrary, many people who don’t own a pet are still concerned about the way animals are treated. Members of PIN frequently check pet stores to visit the animals and ensure water is available at all times,

that food is given and to encourage that animals must be taken out of their cages and played with. These animals cannot speak for themselves. They cannot tell you the excruciating conditions they were put through or how they were unable to swallow food because their owner kept their collar so tight or beat them into submission where they suffered a life full of pain, or were tied to a tree in their back garden where scraps were thrown to them.

Sonja believes that PIN is the change the community will benefit from by raising awareness to ensure that people know that abusing an animal is not correct – from any perspective. According to the spirit and overall teachings of Islam, causing unavoidable pain and suffering to the defenseless and innocent creatures of God is not justifiable under any circumstances. Islam wants us to think and act in the positive terms of accepting all species as important members of communities… just like ours.

Physician & Artist ExtraordinaireAhmed Mater Al-Ziad Aseeri was born in 1979 in Tabuk, a city in the north west of KSA. Married to fellow artist Arwa Yahya Al Neimy, he now lives and works in Abha in southern KSA. He combines his two talents apparently effortlessly and has achieved international recognition for his work as one of KSA’s pre-eminent artists. But it is his passion for his fellow man which inspires his greatest work…his work as a doctor. He spent the first part of 2010 working with the World Health Organization (WHO) on the militarized border between Yemen and Saudi Arabia, treating injured soldiers from both sides of the conflict.

Evolution of Man

His work is in the collection of the British Museum and Los Angeles County Museum of Art and is inspired by his education and life as a medical doctor, as well as by his traditional upbringing in Saudi culture. His journey from a rural community to becoming a successful practicing doctor and contemporary artist brings a compelling originality to his impressive body of work. Ahmed’s ‘Yellow Cow’ and ‘Evolution of Man’ series showcases his originality as well as his desire to return to the roots of an idea in order to fully explore the implications of modern culture on traditional imagery and concepts.

After graduating from King Khalid University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S), he achieved overnight fame when his X-Ray painting was purchased by the British Museum. The following year, Ahmed was invited by the US State Department to take part in the International Visitor Leadership Program in Washington, D.C. He was instrumental in co-curating the ‘Edge of Arabia: Contemporary Art from Saudi Arabia’ exhibit which is currently touring the world.

Swipe your finger across the screen to slash and splatter fruit like a Ninja slashes with a katana. But beware of bombs — hit one and your juicy quest ends. That is the way of the true, juicy “Fruit Ninja.”

Yanbu’s natural harbour is protected on both sides by wide coral reefs. These reefs remain mostly untouched, making them excellent areas for diving in the clear waters of the Red Sea. As the main port for Medinah, the harbor bustles with life for post-dive adventures as well. Yanbu is considered to be one of the best untapped diving sites in the Kingdom; Marsa

Al-Ahlam will be organizing weekly trips and excursions both for families and singles to this spectacular new destination. Their marina can accommodate over 120 yachts/boats, so consider hiring a boat from Jeddah to enhance your time on the water. For a unique way to discover the bounties of the Red Sea, Marsa Al-Ahlam invites you to Yanbu.

Join the Dots And Have a Whaleshark of a Time

Text & Photography by Hans Sjoeholm

Some of the best diving and snorkeling experiences are the sightings of large marine animals. Whale sharks are amongst the most charismatic of the Red Sea’s megafauna. Whalesharks favor our encounters with curiosity and much tolerance, and it is important that we return the favor.

So, are whalesharks whales or sharks? They could be mistaken for whales since they are so big and docile. Like whales, they filter-feed on plankton by taking large mouthfuls of water near the surface. The biggest confirmed whaleshark was 13 metres long and weighed 36 tons, but there are unconfirmed reports of them growing to 18 metres long. Unlike whales, however, they are fish not mammals. Despite the size of the whaleshark, little is actually known about them. They are difficult to monitor as they migrate across great distances and dive to great depths. There is no recorded information on their worldwide population - a low estimate is between 5,000- 25,000. In fact, the whaleshark species Rhincodon typus is listed as vulnerable to extinction according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Truncation of the upper caudal fin. Photographs showing the distinctive patterning and scarring on whalesharks are used to uniquely identify individuals for long-term monitoring.

Little is known about their reproductive behavior, how they breed, where they give birth or where their babies grow up. Age estimates for whale sharks are as high as 60 years, but no one really knows how long this species lives. It is shocking that we know so little about these magnificent animals, but bridging the knowledge gap is a dedicated team of scientists at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal. Professor Michael Berumen of the KAUST Red Sea Research Center has established the world’s largest whaleshark tagging project.

The KAUST team employs a wide variety of whaleshark tagging and tracking techniques, including the use of satellite geo-location technology. The critical task is to able to identify whalesharks by their unique features so as not to count the same ones over and over again. Most of the tracking techniques involve installing a device or marker on the shark in a harmless way, but there are non-invasive techniques that even you can use to help these scientists.

How to shoot a Whaleshark with a camera:

First, know the correct landmarks that you must capture, from the base of the dorsal fin

and the top and the bottom of the last gill slit. The photos need to be taken perpendicular to the shark and on the right side as the spot pattern is different from the left to the right side. Specialized computers will analyze the landmarks and measure the relative distance between the spots, which are like a unique fingerprint. Because the spot patterns are specific to each animal, they can be used as a tool to identify each whaleshark. Ecotourists can photo-tag whale sharks and help track individual whale sharks worldwide by submitting pictures to www.whalesharkproject.org and http://www.sharktrust.org/sd/

Whalesharks gather during spring in the Al Lith area 270 KM south of Jeddah. Scientists don’t yet understand why this occurs, but they are working on it. This is the only place in the world where the gender ratio is an unusual 50/50! Whalesharks are important creatures for Ecotourism. It is important to remember that big fish such as Whalesharks ,Humphead Parrotfish and Napoleon Wrasses are a boon for the travel industry as they are worth much more alive than dead. On your next whaleshark adventure…be ready to join the dots and help to solve the remaining mysteries of these amazing creatures with Photo Id. Your efforts will be rewarded.

Over the years, sushi in all its forms has been an increasingly popular choice among Jeddah foodies. If you remain one of the uninitiated, start off slow with an avocado or crab maki...for the more adventurous, unagi sashimi (eel) will definitely hit the spot. For every occasion and for every budget, DJ brings to you the best of Jeddah’s sushi! As always, don’t forget to check out our Dining Directory for a comprehensive list of all your favorite restaurants.

The Best of Jeddah’s Sushi: Sashimi and Maki and Toro, Oh My!

Best for... TO GO

WAKAME Sushi House is the number one choice for delicious, expertly prepared sushi that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home through their convenient pickup service! The extensive menu and knowledgeable wait staff are only part of the appeal at Wakame; the rest lies in enjoying a fresh selection of temaki or tempura while in your pajamas on the couch! The standouts on the menu include the Hot & Spicy Tuna Salad, a salad that pairs tuna cubes with an unforgettable crunchy tempura dip, and the Crazy Crispy California, a maki roll made up of crab and tobiko (roe).

Best for... EATING OUT

Roshana Mall’s ZN SUSHI LOUNGE is the perfect sushi destination for those looking to enjoy a pre or post-shopping elegant dining experience. ZN Lounge, a relative newcomer to Jeddah’s sushi scene, is already proving to be stiff competition for other more established restaurants. If the immense menu options seem lost in translation to you, be sure to ask one of the staff for recommendations - you will not be disappointed. Must try dishes include the always popular edamame (soybeans), some of the most delicious unagi available in Jeddah, and the extremely hard to find toro (fatty tuna). Another great option to enjoy a night on the town is OHAYO. A beautiful setting combined with live cooking and some of the most delicious nigiri sushi in Jeddah come together to make any dinner out a generally extraordinary experience.

Best for... CASUAL DINING

Sushi Yoshi has managed to create a middle ground for sushi spots in Jeddah by offering a more casual option that’s perfect for an impromptu lunch with friends or co-workers. Although not as traditional as the other options listed in this article, SUSHI YOSHI combines a more a playful approach to Japanese cuisine with some really unique dishes that you would be hard pressed to find in other similar restaurants. Similarly, BE ONE is a great option when you’re looking for a quick meal during your lunch break. With a dedicated business buffet concept, a mix of contemporary Asian cuisines, Be One is the perfect place to indulge in some delicious sushi as a quick break from the daily work grind.

Best for... INTIMATE DINING

For enjoying a more personalized dinner experience, pay a visit to old favorite, Benihana, for a reassuringly familiar menu, enjoyable live cooking, and intimate separate dining rooms. Although Benihana focuses on Japanese cuisine as whole rather than just specifically on sushi, there are some fantastic options on the menu, particularly for those new to this delicacy. Indulge in a crash course on sushi by starting with the avocado maki and work your way up to the more exotic varieties. One of the more appealing aspects of BENIHANA is the wide range of Japanese dishes available: in addition to sushi are the tamer (but just as delicious) options of teppenyaki and mixed grill plates.

Best for... UPSCALE DINING

GINZA I Chome is one of the newer additions to sushi offerings in Jeddah and is a truly beautiful overall dining experience. Located in the luxurious Rosewood Corniche, Ginza i Chome offers Japanese cuisine in addition to a standalone sushi bar. What sets Ginza apart is its beautiful decor and a unique approach to dining based on the concept of Omakase, where both diners and staff are involved in certain aspects of the meal through recommendation and relaxation. Another indulgent option is the recently opened MABU, which is still enjoying rave reviews from diners. A chic lounge-like ambiance and dedicated sushi bar give Mabu a unique atmosphere and the playful names of the sushi dishes will appeal to even the most jaded Jeddah diner/sushi enthusiast.

When you think of comfort food, you want something that makes you feel warm and indulgent. Something that brings back memories from the past and the joys of childhood meals reawakened. That’s where Foul w Dugga comes in.

Foul & Dugga

Location: Malik Rd. Al-Murjan Dist.Tel: +966-504814385

Foul is a local traditional bean dish, and dugga is the spices you pepper it with to enhance the flavor. Together, they make the perfect dip for the local “tamees” bread. The interior of this restaurant reflects the warmth and comfort associated with this traditional dish, only modernised and “cleaned up”, in comparison with your local foul shop. The concept makes tradition young, hip, and edgy, while the intro and names on the Arabic menu reflect a charming sense of local humor.

Other items on the menu include variations of the foul, kibda (liver), maasoub (banana-flour-honey dish), and mutabag (the local ancestor of the crepe, with its various fillings). All confirmed traditional “comfort foods”. Keeping up with the tradition of opening right after dawn, and staying open till noon, it suggests the best time to eat such energy-packed meals. At great, wallet-friendly prices, this place may not be for the calorie conscious, but it’s definitely the answer for the delicious-conscious.

Jeddah’s Own TrattoriaThe secret to great Italian cuisine has been debated over for centuries. What food-lovers can agree on, however, is that for an Italian dish to truly shine, it must emerge as more than the sum of its parts. Il Porto, Jeddah’s first and very own trattoria, accomplishes this lofty goal and then some.

How can a dish become more than the sum of its parts? Take a pizza for example. Any layman will tell you the components of this dish - dough, cheese, tomato sauce, and a few toppings if you’re feeling adventurous. Il Porto’s take on an Italian classic, the margherita pizza, somehow becomes a symphony of airy dough, flavorful tomato sauce and delicious mozzarella cheese - definitely a departure from your average, greasy pizza.

This locally developed concept was first opened in January of 2011 and has transformed itself since then into a charmingly sophisticated pizzeria located on the picturesque marina of the Park Hyatt. Echoing the tradition of seaside trattorias worldwide, Il Porto lives up to its name by offering beautiful terrace dining that complements the appealingly fresh menu options.

The signature dishes of Italian cuisine are all standouts at Il Porto - including the Penne Arrabiata, the Pasta Alfredo, and the Pasta di Mari (seafood) in addition to a mouthwatering selection of pizzas (that includes all the traditional favorites as well as a few interesting spins such as the Chicken Caesar Pizza). Upon entering Il Porto, diners are greeted by a tempting salad bar that is invitingly difficult to resist. Few people will be able to say ‘No’ to these lovely fresh salads and vegetables.

One of the most appealing aspects of Il Porto is also one of the most difficult to put into words. The restaurant offers a warm rustic atmosphere oozes hospitality and elegance. The walls play host to an eclectic assortment of paintings, most of which come from the owner’s own private collection, the staff are effusive and friendly and will gladly offer their recommendations on the menu. The food could have come straight out of any corner trattoria in Sicily, but the service is truly at a global standard; quality is not spared in the name of authenticity and vice versa.

Out of the many staff recommendations came a Lychee Bellini, one of the most unique and refreshing spins on a mocktail you’ll find in Jeddah, and the Duca del Dulche, a sweet spin that turns pizza into a decadent dessert. Between this and the Mini Flirts, a selection of three mini desserts that includes tiramisu, dark chocolate mousse, and caramel pannacotta, dessert is one of the more stressful choices to make at Il Porto, (but this is a delicious kind of stress!)

For the discerning diner who’s become just a little tired of overly complicated menus with too much description and not enough personality, Il Porto will satisfy those cravings and maybe even transport you to the marinas of Italy with just a few delicious bites.

The Leylati Group has done it yet again! Although the high expectations were not completely met, Bharat still delivered an exciting and entertaining evening of Indian fusion cuisine. From the first step into the restaurant, the Leylati signature is evident everywhere i.e. the décor, the ambiance, the chic staff uniforms, and of course, the warm welcome at the entrance.

Bharat largely offers contemporary Indian cuisine with a nod to the tastes of the Arab or foreign customers – dishes unheard of in a traditional Indian menu appear on their tables. Truffle Naan with Wild Mushrooms and Truffle Oil, Blue Cheese Naan, Lobster Roll, Raw Mango and Coconut Sauce, and Iced Chocolate Finger with Ginger and Masala Pine-apple are among their unique creations. Even their samosas were exceptionally different, with fillings ranging from wild mushroom, goat cheese with smoked ca-shew nuts and the standard potatoes and green peas. The Seafood platter included

some succulent, herb marinated ‘Najel’ fish – a lovely presentation of delicate flavor and consistency, The desserts were definitely one of the major highlights of the evening specially the Pudding and the Cardamom Crème Brulee with Coco-nut Pancakes - simply exceptional. The remaining items included traditional des-serts with a twist, which also stimulated our taste buds intriguingly.

The décor, although beautiful, was somewhat confusing. It included a mix of high-end items with very ordinary looking additions - the cups and certain cutlery were more on the simple / casual end and did not fit the luxurious surround-ings. Was this intended to give a slightly more casual feel to the restaurant? If so, it definitely worked. Overall, the experience was excellent; however please remem-ber this is an Indian Fusion restaurant. Hardcore Indian food lovers expecting a pure Indian cuisine experience might not be fully satisfied.

Summer is around the corner…are you all set with your holiday plans in place? If you think it’s too early to begin thinking about summer vacation, then think again. Some of the best hotel and airfare deals are snapped up by savvy travel agents and their customers, so get a jump on the crowds by considering the following issues:

-Decide on the destination: romantic European holiday for two or Disneyland with the kids? Relaxing by the beach or enjoying a mediterranean cruise? What you want to do on your holiday will dictate where you go, so make sure all the travelers agree on some common themes such as sight-seeing, shopping, aventures, family fun etc. in order to keep everyone happy.

-Decide on the timing: keep in mind that Ramadan will fall between August 1-29, 2011, while school holidays start June 23, and end Sept. 9th, 2011. Timing can affect where you go as the weather conditions differ from place to place – pack accordingly.

Where Are YOU Spending the Summer?Start Planning Now

-Decide on a budget: change currency before you travel. Take credit cards, travelers checks, and cash!

-Start searching now: the best airline, hotel, and car rental offers are available the earlier you book and buy your ticket. Check out popular travel sites.

-Make sure you know your airline’s baggage allowance. Some airlines are extremely strict and will charge you exorbitant fees for overweight luggage...even for 1 or 2kg.

-Check visa requirements: sometimes they take longer than anticipated. Make sure everyone’s passports are valid for travel.

US Visa Fraud Alert! The latest internet scam is about the US Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, so be on guard for fraudulent emails asking for money or bank details in order to process your winning visa. The Department of State’s Kentucky Consular Center (KCC) does not send e-mail notifications regarding status – they will only direct applicants to their official website www.dvlottery.state.gov. KCC NEVER requests money for lottery participation! Images of U.S. emblems such as flags, eagles, monuments, or official seals do not necessarily indicate an official US Government website, so if in doubt, check with the US embassy or consulate.

-First time visiting? Get to know the place before you go. Search online or visit the consulate in Jeddah - they all carry current guidebooks and travel information.

-Start a packing list: add essential travel items to it as you remember them (medicines, adapters, toiletries etc.) You’ll be less stressed as your departure date approaches.

-Organize your electronics: make sure you have spare batteries, memory cards, cords, adapters etc.

-Look after the home front: set up auto-bill payments, leave a spare set of keys for emergencies, arrange for someone to check up on your house while you’re gone.

Last but not least, consider travel insurance: unforeseen emergencies can drain your wallet, so plan ahead with comprehensive travel insurance which covers cancellation, theft, illness, and natural disasters.

Global travelers are increasingly relying on private health insurance to cover all their medical needs when they leave their home country. Rates are in the SR80/month range for comprehensive care. You only pay for the duration of your travel, so it’s a smart move which caps your maximum payments to an amount which you can factor into your budget. With health care prices on the rise worldwide, especially in Europe and the US, it makes sense to insure the whole family before you board a plane. Most local and international insurance companies offer a variety of medical plans – check out some of the local and international agencies.

Blessed Waters:Zamzam Project Launched

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah, inaugurated the SR 700 million Zamzam purification project in October of last year. Located in Makkah, the center was established in order to maintain the cleanliness and distribution of the holy water. The state of the art purification process system monitors the water from start to finish to ensure quality standards.

The Ministry of Water and Electricity coordinated the mega project as a means to solve distribution issues within the Haram as well as to the other 42 distribution stations around Makkah; pilgrims can obtain containers of the water from specially designed machines. For those within the Haram itself, another plan has

The blessed waters of the Well of Zamzam hold strong spiritual significance among Muslims as a divine source of water and a true miracle of modern times. It is a much coveted commodity both both inside and outside the Kingdom and a recent purification project has facilitated both access and quality standards for pilgrims in Makkah.

been undertaken to facilitate access to the Zamzam distribution points located in the Grand Mosque. Zamzam water is an important aspect to the millions of Muslims who perform the yearly umrah (pilgrimage). It is considered a blessed water with healing properties and spiritual prominence.

The Zamzam well plays a significant role in Islamic history. It is stated that the wife of the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), Hagar, was searching for water for her son in the dry valleys of Makkah. After running back and forth between the Safa and Marwah hills seven times, the water miraculously rose out of the arid ground after Ismail scraped the land and the site became the well of Zamzam.

This ladies-only center located in Khaldia provides services for newly converted Muslim women in a welcoming atmosphere. Founded in 2002, this non-profit association established the women’s center in 2003 to “assist new Muslims worldwide and to provide them with on-going support.” The objectives of the International Association for New Muslims include setting up initiatives to help new Muslims enrich their knowledge of Islam and information on how to adjust to the routines of Islamic daily life. By supporting social educational events, both locally and internationally, the center also invites volunteers to participate in introducing new converts to Islam and various events.

Ongoing projects include the establishment of a library aimed at providing relevant information to Muslims; the distribution of gift packages to new Muslims (a Quran, books on Islam, prayer set, and an Adhan clock); Arabic lessons; facilitating Hajj and Umrah trips and various other activities aimed at enriching and easing the adjustment into a new way of life. The Association also hosts lectures from Islamic scholars from all over the world which are open to women in Jeddah.

The International Association For New Muslims

Although the initiatives that the center endorses are impressive, what really makes this a special place is the extraordinary team of women from all over the world who are behind the helm. Their sincerity, warmth, and knowledge are the driving force behind this inspiring center.

Once upon a time it was the duty of the family and extended family to teach and support a woman through pregnancy and birth. Mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, and friends would encourage and share information to allow a woman to birth well. Today it is all about sharing horror stories and advice of “just leave it up to the obstetrician” or “there is nothing you can do anyway.”

“It has been an extraordinary experience and I will do it again for my 2nd baby Insha’Allah” Jeddah 2011

Parents choose prenatal education for a variety of reasons- Understand what will happen in labour-Initiate bonding with their baby- Allow their birth partner to know what to do- To know when labour actually starts-Meet other mothers- Learn how to communicate with OB or midwives- Stop feeling anxious or scared

- Avoid intervention or understand how caesarean works.

Prenatal Education is almost a prerequisite for childbirth in many countries. Education about labour and delivery provides a better understanding of how the body works in labour so parents have confidence leading up to and during the birth.

Fortunately these days we have access to superior medical assistance should we

require it for our baby and have the comfort of hospitals equipped with wonderful delivery suites. We also have highly trained and experienced childbirth educators to transfer up to date information about birth. It is essential we take responsibility for the way we approach our baby’s birth and leave the obstetricians and midwives to do their jobs effectively.

In most things in life we spend many hours researching, understanding, learning and preparing especially for events that change our lives, enhance our lives and are supposed to be so special and memorable. Consider how many hours you have spent on “google”, Why? Because we crave information. How much preparation and research went into planning your wedding, your last holiday or choosing furniture for your home even?

Knowledge and preparation are fundamental to making choices in pregnancy, labour and delivery. In the Kingdom professional prenatal preparation is very difficult to find unless you know people. Saudi women and fellow pregnant expatriates are highly educated and seek information for a relaxed pregnancy and safe comfortable birth.

There are options for birth prenatal education that will clarify the birth process for expectant parents so you can look forward to that special day you meet your baby..Jeddah has many women who offer support and information for you and will help you prepare.

PepsiCo

PepsiCo has developed the world’s first plastic bottle made entirely from plant-based, fully renewable resources. PepsiCo’s “green” bottle is 100% recyclable and is made from bio-based raw materials like switch grass, pine bark and corn husks. Orange peels, potato peels, oat hulls and other agricultural byproducts may be used in future. Environmentally-friendly bottles which are created of the byproducts of their own food business – good for their bottom line AND good for the planet. Arriving in 2012 to stores everywhere, you won’t be able to tell the difference. A big ‘Thumbs Up’ to PepsiCo in the hopes that more companies will follow their visionary green initiative!

What NOT to Recycle

Green Tips for

Cool Days

DESTINATION JEDDAH 83

The recycling process is not as simple as it may seem. It’s not about throwing all recyclable materials in a bag and expecting a company to categorize it for you. Most people may think they know all they need to know about recycling…but here are some surprising things you can’t recycle.

Turn it off! Living in a hot country has us turn on the AC for long hours of the day and night. But these days the weather is perfect for spending time outdoors and keeping windows open all day.

*Mawakib Al-ajr accepts all recyclable items. For further info, call: 02-2560834Or visit the facebook group: Mawakeb Alajer

Pizza Boxes: Yes they’re made of cardboard, but they’re also tainted with sticky cheese, tomato sauce and grease.

Wet Paper: It’s less valuable to paper recyclers because the paper fibers that have been soaked are shorter.

Plastic Bags full of random trash or more plastic bags: Workers cannot open plastic bags to check what’s inside, so they get trashed. Instead, reuse these plastic bags at home for your wastebaskets.

Wire Hangers: Jeddah doesn’t have any recycling centers that handle wires, so just reuse them in your closet or better yet, take them back to the dry cleaners for reuse!

Paper Napkins or Towels: Like used pizza boxes, food contamination often puts this material off the recycle list. Try to use wash clothes instead of generating mountains of paper waste.

Styrofoam: It’s highly flammable and a danger to most recycling centers. Avoid throwing this in any recycling bin.

· NO heaters here…but if you want to warm up, then a good hot cup of cocoa or tea should do the trick rather than turning on any type of electric heater Or curl up with a loved one with a Snuggie. · Let the sun shine in! Maximize Jeddah’s sunlight into your room and house while you can. · No matter how cold or chilly it gets, the sun is always shining. Since there’s less dust at this time of year, try hanging your clothes outside on a rack, instead of using a dryer. · Grab a blanket, picnic basket and head to the park for some fun in Jeddah’s fantastic weather!

Jeddah - On the Cutting Edge of Aeroponics TechnologyHarnessing Humidity to Grow Crops

Aeroponics is a process that grows plants in mist. First, the seeds are sown into a porous support and are sprayed with mist and nutrients. This method, where even run-off mist is reused, uses significantly less water compared to soil-based methods and re-circulates nutrients. Plants are grown in a reusable and durable cloth medium, which results in an efficient harvest of a dry and clean product. Aeroponic grown plants are also pesticide-free. Unlike hydroponics, which uses water as a growing medium, aeroponics literally uses mist-laden air in which to grow plants.

AeroFarms, the company behind this technology, has paired aeroponic technology with a water vapor harvestor, called Air-to-Water Technology. This water vapor harvester takes water found in the air and condenses it to liquid form in order to grow plants, which is a good idea, since our hot weather and coastal location act as a dynamic duo for such a project. AeroFarms systems use less than 20% of the water used in traditional soil-based agriculture.

Not only does AeroFarms capitalize on humid weather, it also plays along to the bustling city scene, where vast farms are not an option, yet a constant food supply

Jeddah is a humid city with scarce water sources. But it is this very humidity that has made possible an exciting new farming technology: Aeroponics.

is necessary. By using an indoor, vertically stackable design, aeroponically grown plants can be grown anywhere, even inside buildings! This method is extremely land-efficient, since it uses less than approximately 3% of the land required to grow plants conventionally.

This green initiative can be visited at a farm near Jeddah sponsored by Sheikh Saleh Bugshan in cooperation with Adawat International. The installed units have been functioning since January 2011. Aeroponic technology is a promising new technology, especially with water resources dwindling and farming land relatively insufficient for growing populations. In the world of agriculture, Jeddah’s farming initiative could be the start of something new.

While most people understand the benefits of breastfeeding infants, the practice is not always supported in all cultures. A Fading Art by Dr. Modia Batterjee is a personal and highly researched exploration of breastfeeding in Saudi Arabia. A lactation consultant, Batterjee saw firsthand how the Arab culture encourages breastfeeding, yet does not support it, making it difficult for Saudi women to feed their children the way they should. Interlaced with chapters on breastfeeding during Ramadan and birthing practices are Batterjee›s own fascinating experiences with prenatal education and breastfeeding counseling.Warmly written and informative, A Fading Art explores how and why breastfeeding is so beneficial, from its rich supply of antibodies and nutrients to the way it bonds mothers and infants together. Batterjee also examines communities and how they work, or don›t work, to help families. Batterjee and her family opened the Al-Bidayah Center, the first breastfeeding resource and women’s awareness center in Saudi Arabia, providing counseling for mothers and training for nurses and health care workers. By giving breastfeeding a hip and cool image, Batterjee hopes to encourage future generations to consider the ultimate feeding practice for infants. A fascinating foray into a different culture and an exploration of the best, most natural nutrition for newborns, A Fading Art is both a thought-provoking study of a practice that is not as easily accepted as it should be and a personal story of an extraordinary woman and her efforts. About the Author:Dr. Modia Batterjee holds a Doctorate degree in Health Administration; she is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and a member of La Leche League International, WABA, ILCA, and IBFAN.

Useful Arabic Words& Pronunciations

Arabic is the world’s 5th most commonly spoken language with almost 300 million native speakers. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and belongs to the Semitic group of languages. The three main classifications are: Classical Arabic, also known as the language of the Qur’an, Modern Standard Arabic, used in books, newspapers, and media, and Local dialects, which vary by country and region.

Arabic words are constructed from three-letter “roots” which convey a basic idea. For example, k-t-b conveys the idea of writing. Addition of other letters before, between and after the root letters produces many associated words: not only “write” but also “book”, “office”, “library”, and “author”. The Arabic alphabet consists of 28 consonants and three vowels – a, i, u; it is written from right to left. Some of the glottal sounds are unique to Arabic. The Arabic words presented opposite reflect the Hijazi dialect.

Where did this word come from?Did you know that many English words have Arabic origins? Algebra, alchemy, and algorithm are easily identifiable by the ‘al’ which means ‘the’ in Arabic, but how about these words…

‘guitar’ qītāra, a kind of guitar. “The name قيتارةreached English several times, including 14th century giterne from Old French. The modern word is directly from Spanish guitarra, from Arabic qitar.” (Etymonline.com). The Arabic is descended from ancient Greek kithara (which might be connected to ancient Persian Tar meaning string, and string instrument).

Hijazi Proverb

Want to spice up your Arabic with a proverb? Wrap your mind around this:

“Mud rjoolak ‘ala gad lehafak”

Meaning: Extend your legs as far as your blanket will go.

Use: When you want to advise a person not to live beyond their means or spend beyond what their budget will allow. So it’s like saying: don’t pursue a lifestyle that you cannot maintain.
