Diwali signifies the return of King of Ayodhya Rama from a difficult 14 year vanvas (exile). The people lit up their homes to welcome their beloved king home after such a long time and burst fire crackers to express their joy and happiness at his return. To this date, Diwali signifies the banishing of evil and darkness and welcoming light and joy.

Happily, Diwali transcends religion and is universally celebrated by Indians in a spirit befitting a festival of light and joy
