Leadership during an economic slowdown:During slowdown Bharti group though had tough times, Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal displayed his unique leadership style:

•Empathetic leadership :

He was very compassionate, caring and understanding. He was conscious about his employees. He displayed employee-centered leadership qualities. Cost cutting was major target rather than layoffs, retrenchment, and salary cuts.

•Innovation and creation.

Continues improvement and creativity are among the secrets of highly successful organizations.Eg: At present Airtel is coming up with new mobile phone applications daily to provide something new and extra to the cell phone subscribers. This has seen a sudden spurt in demand and also improved its bottom line margins.

•Penetrating Strategies:

During economic slowdown, leaders of this type generally adopt market penetrative strategies. He redesigned the structure of the organization accordingly to gain competitive advantage. All external stakeholders are given utmost importance in decisions. Product design, production processes, quality, procurement strategies, distribution strategies, positioning and promotion strategies- the cost involved in all this areas are fine-tuned according to the requirement in economic slowdown.

Case studySunil Bharti Mittal ,who has built his empire in

telecom industry with 140 million subscibers. Sunil Mittal set to build 550 schools to

educate 100000 poor children ,inside India’s villages.

Bharti foundation set up in 2000 with corpus fund of 200 crore.

Sunil Mittal has made improvement in schools provided number of sufficient teachers etc.

All the schools are built according to a blue print drawn up by Delhi-based architect.

Schools is located in half an acres of land and five classrooms (1 to 5) and a staff room facilities.

Other facilities like toilets ,a vegetable garden,and a playground and each school has internet connection.

Skill building initiative are undertaken for all the students in their final years in the secondary school.

Each and every students can pursue their studies or if they want to take job based on the skills they have acquired.

For doing all this he studied the US model where individuals and corporate had made commitment towards social responsibility.

IBM is installing a computer in every school with games and other features that are meant for education.

PWC and E&Y are auditing the foundation books of accounts free.

Deutsche Bank has adopted 4 school and Wal-Mart has accepted 1.
