European News

Twenty two teams travelled to Belgium for the European Flyball Championships at the beginning of July. There were twelve divisions and there were British representatives in every division except divisions ten and twelve.

The Europeans run a different format from us and all our teams ran in speed trials before competing in a double elimination tournament to find the division winner.

Two of our teams were delighted to win their divisions; Marnicks (Division 6) and Euro Chuggers (Division 11). Four teams achieved second places; Cheshire Dolphins (Division 2), Alphas Abroad (Division 3), Cambridgeshire Continentals (Division 5) and Lightning Bolt (Division 7). To complete our podium successes High Flyers achieve 3rd place in Division 1.

All of our teams were excellent ambassadors for our Association, Well done to you all. Division 1 High Flyers Shooting High Star Aces

Greetings Flyballers I’ve had a ‘little bee in my bonnet’ for a while now that started off as totally unrelated to flyball. It all began while I was listening to an item on the radio about lowering the drink drive limits and rural spokespeople saying it should remain as it is for rural areas because there was less traffic on the roads! DOH! The item carried on by giving information about French laws and I felt these were good as it handed responsibility to their citizens to ‘do it right’. For the past goodness knows how many years our responsibilities have been eroded, so that now many people take the view that ‘it’s not my fault, it wasn’t specifically noted in our laws’ or I wasn’t given the right tools for the job etc., so I can’t be in the wrong even though I really know I shouldn’t have that done that. This eventually led me to wondering how many of our flyball rules have been added over the years because people hadn’t taken responsibility and how many of those rules actually punish the members who do do it right? Have a think and let’s start to take responsibility for our own actions again.

Many of our members have been to the European Championships and have enjoyed far more success than in the past as teams learn the different strategies to employ when using the European system. My thanks go to David Flood from the Cambridgeshire Canines for supplying the photos. I have gleaned all the results from the euro website, regrettably I didn’t receive any reports from any of the participants.

I’m really looking forward to our own British Championships, it’s going to be bigger than last year’s and its success was a feat of organisational prowess from Bridget. She has 42 teams to juggle with in 4 rings this year so I hope you will all be as helpful as possible and make her job easier. To my mind the Championship is all about making the racing as exciting as we can by being truly competitive. Close racing really gets the adrenalin flowing and is, I hope, the reason we all do flyball.

Finally, I’d like to thank all those members that have spoken to me personally at tournaments about various issues in a friendly and calm atmosphere. Your views are noted whatever the source and although things may not happen immediately please remember – Rome wasn’t built in a day!

What age should dogs start Open Competition?

I was recently asked what I thought about the current ruling of dogs not being allowed to run in open competition (more specifically over full height for that particular dog) until they were 18 months old. Specifically, at what age is a dog’s musculo-skeletal development considered complete and therefore safe to participate in a high impact sport such as Flyball? This obviously also raises the question about training methods and intensities for starter dogs in relation to jump heights and box work which is beyond the scope of this article.

From a skeletal point of view the bones grow from either end at sites called growth plates. These plates fuse/close at varying times during a dog’s development. Until these plates have fused, they are potential weak points and prone to injury when excessive force is applied to them. Excessive force on these areas can lead to fracture through the growth plate, premature closure of the growth plate leading to shortening of the affected bone if the whole growth plate closes or possibly abnormal angular growth of that bone if the damage is only at one point of the growth plate. The time at which the growth plates close varies with each individual bone (see table). It is also clear that there is a huge individual variation in normal growth plate closure between dogs and therefore a one age fits all rule clearly does not apply. With this in mind, I think the worst case scenario should be set as the standard for when it is safe to jump full height and take a ball from the box at speed!

The growth plate that POTENTIALLY takes the longest to close is the one involved in the formation of the ball of the hip joint. It may take up to 18 months for this plate to close in a normal population of dogs. Clearly the hip joint is exposed to massive forces during jumping and turning on the box etc and therefore excessive force on these plates early on MAY lead to damage. Interestingly, the growth plate at the bottom of the forearm (radius) also can be one of the last ones to close (17 months). This is also an area that takes a huge stress in flyball with some dogs hitting the box very hard with their wrist joints experiencing massive loading (as some videos on Facebook and a veterinary student’s dissertation have recently demonstrated!!!!). By nasty coincidence, the two areas that take the biggest bashing in the sport are potentially the areas that take longest to mature!

Growth Plate Closure - Range (days) Closure - Average (days) FORELIMB Tuber scapulae (shoulder blade) 117-210 186 Proximal humeral epiphysis (top of upper arm bone) 273-465 375

Medial and lateral humeral condyles (Bottom of upper arm bone) 138-236 187

Proximal radial epiphysis (top of forearm bone) 136-330 258

Distal radial epiphysis (Bottom of forearm bone) 136-510 318

Proximal ulnar epiphysis (Top of forearm bone) 161-450 258

Distal ulnar epiphysis (Bottom of forearm bone) 217-450 308

(Table 1 Modified after Newton. D.M in Textbook of Small Animal Orthopaedics 1985, and used with permission of the Publishers Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins)

Another factor to be considered is that several studies have been done to show that dogs that are neutered early (i.e. before they reach sexual maturity) will have delayed growth plate closures compared with dogs left entire. As many people are encouraged to neuter dogs before they reach sexual maturity this may play a significant role in the length of time dogs growth plates are open and therefore susceptible to excessive strain. It has been shown that dogs neutered early have longer bones than those that aren’t neutered highlighting the fact that these dogs are growing for longer and therefore are potentially at increased risk. Again, by nasty coincidence it seems that growth plate at the bottom of the radius is one of the plates most sensitive to the effects of sex hormones and will remain open longer if a dog is neutered early in its life.

From a muscle and soft tissue point of view it has long been known that these develop after skeletal maturity is reached. Therefore, the muscles/ligaments and tendons of dogs are probably only starting to get strong after the bones have done their growing.

I think in summary it is fair to say that the current ruling on dogs not being allowed to compete in open comps (i.e. full height jumps) until they are 18months of age is fair and reasonable. It also raises some interesting questions on the training methods used on our young dogs. I do not believe jumping full height earlier than this is a good idea. It should also be borne in mind that even at 18 months, some dogs may still have open growth plates if they were neutered early and that every dog should be considered as an individual.

First of all I would like to thank my predecessor, Steve Leek for doing such a great job in a short space of time. His resignation for personal reasons came as a great shock to all of us, however things must carry on for the benefit of the BFA and its members, and I am proud to have been elevated to the top job.

If I may introduce myself to those of our members who do not know me; I am a mature adult and together with my wife Jackie we have been involved in flyball since 1997 starting off with the now defunct Wakefield Optimists then Tykes and in August 2000 we started our own Greetland Grasshoppers Flyball Club, based in Halifax, West Yorkshire. We celebrate our 10th anniversary this year.

I am now in my Sixth Year as a Committee Member, the last three as Vice Chairman. Whilst serving on the Committee I have had dealings with various issues that have been submitted from members and as such have gained a wealth of experience. I have been a Head Judge for over 10 years and have always actively participated in forums, AGM’s and training seminars etc over the years.

In my private life I am a retired Police Officer and I currently work full time as a Council Dog Warden.

Being on the BFA Committee can be a very rewarding experience as it gives you the opportunity to put back into the sport all the enjoyment you have gained from it over the years

I look forward to this opportunity to lead the team into 2011 as Chairman with optimism and vigour. I know I have a strong and experienced committee behind me who work tirelessly on your behalf to enhance our sport in the best way they can. Remember this: the Committee are all volunteers who, like myself in most instances, hold down full time jobs. I would appeal to the membership for calm and understanding and patience with the committee when dealing with issues. All too often we see criticisms and members opinions on the discussion board which more often than not seek to destabilise our position on these issues. The most important of these are of course the ‘lights’. We have faith in our current Millstream Systems on which I know Dave Long and Martin Pollard (Manufacturer) have spent many hours trying to get them perfect, if lights can ever be perfect.

However I will be looking to set up a Working Party later this year or early next year to scour the world of flyball in various countries and come up with a set of ‘lights’ that never go wrong, if they in fact exist plus costings etc, etc. So if there is anyone out there who may have an interest in joining this proposed group I would be interested to hear from you, maybe one from North, South, East and West, led by a Chairperson. Can I also remind you that the members of this committee were all voted on by yourselves to run the Association to the best of our ability , and that I can assure you is what we intend to do.

On a lighter note I would like to congratulate all the British Teams that competed in this year’s European Champs in Belgium. We had some startling results and to the teams that gained first places in their respective divisions, The Marnick’s Div 6, and Eurochugger’s Div 11, and the rest of you that gained placings, very well done you did us proud.

Again this year the British Championships at Southam will be massive, with 42 divisions in FOUR rings, a first, so please bear with us if we have slight hiccups. This is a monumental logistical situation to sort, but I am confident we have the right people in the right places to make it all go well. Please enjoy your racing in a sporting matter and be tolerant of each other, as I know competition in all divisions will be tight.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I am approachable, and if you see me around the shows stop and have a chat or just say hello, and if members wish to contact me about issues, feel free to do so. Best Regards Howard Campbell (Greetland Grasshoppers and BFA Chairman)

HEATSTROKE - DEADLY IN DOGS! How to Recognise, Treat and Prevent it HEATSTROKE occurs when a dog gets dangerously overheated and so fails to regulate its body temperature. Dogs don't sweat all over their skin, like we do. They lower their temperature primarily through panting. If a dog cannot cool itself efficiently, it may suffer Heatstroke. A dog’s normal temperature is 100.5-102.5 F. At 106 F and above, physiological changes start to take place, resulting in irreversible damage to the kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract, heart and brain. A dog with Heatstroke will be panting heavily and may be hyperventilating. Salivation increases, gums become pale, greyish and tacky, pulse is rapid or erratic and the dog becomes weak, confused and inattentive. It may vomit and pass bloody diarrhoea. If it continues to overheat, breathing slows or stops, and finally, seizures or coma occur. The amount of damage a dog sustains will depend on the severity and duration of the Heatstroke episode. The longer and more severe, the worse the damage will be. WHAT TO DO: RECOGNISE THE SYMPTOMS AND RESPOND URGENTLY

Get the dog into the shade at once. Apply copious cool water to the inner thighs and stomach, where there are many relatively superficial, large blood vessels. Soak the pads of the feet too. The best method is to use a shower or hose. Try to keep the dog moving - encourage it to stand or walk slowly as it cools. Circulating blood can pool in certain areas if the dog is lying down, preventing cooled blood from circulating back to the dog’s core. Allow the dog to drink SMALL amounts of COOL water. Rapid drinking may cause vomiting or bloat. Cooling is the first priority, hydration is next. Don't allow the dog to gulp water.

DO NOT SUBMERGE THE DOG in a pool or tub as this cools the dog too rapidly, and could cause heart attack or Bloat. If necessary, stand the dog in a pond or pool, IN THE SHADE, up to its elbows, then cool it’s back, head and ears, by pouring water over it from a suitable container. DO NOT USE ICE or ICED WATER – it SLOWS the cooling process, causing blood vessels to constrict. Cooling too quickly can cause the dog to suffer from Hypothermia. DO NOT PUT A TOWEL OR COVER ON THE DOG – it creates a sauna effect. The water must be able to evaporate. DO NOT PUT THE DOG IN A KENNEL OR CRATE – it will restrict the airflow. DO NOT GIVE HUMAN PERFORMANCE DRINKS - If the dog won’t drink water, try offering a thin, chicken or beef broth. If you are stuck away from home, and your car has air conditioning, turn it on full and sit with the WET dog inside it, PROVIDING the car is shaded and not hot.

It is essential the dog sees the vet as soon as possible, once his temperature begins to drop. The vet will check if there is any damage to the kidneys and liver, and give advice for follow-up care. The effects of Heatstroke can continue for 2-3 days or more, even if the dog appears to be back to normal. The most common cause of death following Heatstroke is from blood coagulating throughout the body. It can occur hours or even days after the episode.

PREVENTION IS THE BEST MEDICINE: Walk your dog in the early morning or late evening in Summer, not during peak temperatures of daytime. If you cannot do this, just don’t walk your dog. He DOES NOT need to be walked every day If you park in the sun, before putting your dog in a car, open all the doors to allow the car to cool. If you keep a crate in the car, make sure it isn’t hot to touch, and so prevent the dog burning its nose. Keep minimal bedding in a car crate, when it’s hot. Dogs should have access to fresh water whilst travelling.

DO NOT leave your dog in a car when it’s sunny, at all, even for a short period of time – it can become like an oven in no time and dogs simply bake to death in their owner’s car. If in doubt, leave your dog at home. IF YOU GET STUCK IN A MOTORWAY TRAFFIC JAM, and your dog is in the rear of the car, with the sun shining through the rear windscreen, pull on to the hard shoulder and get the dog into the shade of the passenger compartment, unless you have fully-functioning air conditioning. DO NOT play ball and fast games when it is hot or let children play with the dog in the heat. If you are wearing shorts and T-shirt, beware – your dog can’t take HIS coat off! Congratulations to the following members of Wilmslow Wild Dogs Flyball Teams

for achieving their recent awards: Flyball Dog – Sara Lomas & Eva Barry Cowdery & Lizzie Janice Pickup & Daisy May Intermediate – Mark Wallis & Charlie Huge Congratulations to Pam Gallaway & Simon the Patterdale Terrier on achieving their Platinum Award. Simon has been racing for 8 years and has been a fantastic height dog and Multibreed dog, first for Rapidz and then for Wilmslow. Although, he is “officially retiring”, he will still make “guest appearances” when needed! Well done to both of you from all your team mates in Wilmslow Wild Dogs.

First Competition

I shall start off with a bit written by Georgina, it says it all about our first competition, stressful? Very!! Fun definitely…..

Really proud of my boys (hmm Jed, you might have been slightly quicker if on one run you had just got the ball and come back, not got the ball, had a look around at the crowd that end then come back!! Oh yes then the other run could have been a bit quicker if maybe instead of picking up a stray ball before getting your one out of the box and bringing me two balls you had just got your own ball!)

Well - despite a catalogue of disasters and events we got THIRD!!!! Ok so only out of six and it was in the starters.

Thursday One of the dogs in one of our teams has been a bit lethargic so June put out a request for a reserve dog from another team (people who have dogs who have never competed often say if there is a spare needed could they please let their dog run in order to get the experience).

We got the offer of a spare dog, so we had enough dogs of our own plus the spare in case one of ours is still not bothered about running.

Sarah has a split in the fuel tank on her van, the garage cannot get new one until next week!!! So she can’t come and we are two dogs down (one in each of our teams)

Friday June put a request on the flyball website for a replacement dog from another team and had one offered so so we are now down to Bo, Annie, Trumps and M abel in one team and Jed, Rusty, Sweep plus two spares in the other. Rusty and Annie are June's dogs so they could not run at the same time as each other; neither could Jed and Bo due to the logistics of it!) I lose the car key but manage to find the spare. June got to the site and found that one of the spare dogs has just unexpectedly come into season... st ill; we may be able to borrow another dog. Or the lethargic dog may do ok.

Saturday I put off the poo patrol until after the dog walk, and then I found a load of blood in the garden! I checked and all bottoms were ok (no traces) all the gums were pink and healthy, everyone was as manic as normal. There was no sign of illness to narrow down who it came from ... but there was a lot of it so I rang vet then took the blood down to be checked with all four dogs in car in case they needed to be checked. I had to wait ages as the surgery was really busy but Mikki (vet) looked at it then came out to say it was vomit and looked like a carcass or something had been eaten... light bulb time! Friday I had unwrapped the 400g block of frozen mince and put it in the dish with water to defrost to cook when I came home... in fact it had been out for a few hours so was probably thawed by the time I went out. When I came home the dish had been taken off the back of the worktop and the contents eaten... so the blood and bits I found were actually from that, not one of the beasts. Eventually I got caravan hitched up and we set off.

I got to Aberaeron and realised I had not picked up the boys' harnesses! I had put them on one side to take but I didn’t want to get them excited by seeing the harnesses so I was going to put them in the car quietly , then I ended up rushing around after the blood affair... I rang a neighbour, who got her young daughter to climb through the dogflap and get the keys, then I got Brenda (who was having to drive up Sunday morning) to go round and pick them up.

Page 15: Division Six Winners Marnicks - British Flyball Association 2010 Aug.pdf · The Europeans run a different format from us and all our teams ran in speed trials before ... spokespeople

On the way to the venue I stopped for coffee - a takeout so it can cool while I let the dogs out. Cassie wandered under Jed while he was in mid flow and got a yellow head. I decided hot coffee on a napkin would be best way to clean her up (especially as she sleeps next to my face!!) I went to put a splash on the napkin and got about a teaspoonful of scalding coffee on my hand instead. Instant blister! Luckily it did go down by the time I got to the site leaving just a red patch.

Sunday June got a text at 8.15 from Anne (one dog in each team) to say sorry, she had only just woken up; she’d been sick during the night and wouldn't be able to come!!! (Anne lives in Lampeter, the event was near Runcorn, Cheshire). There were choice words from June and myself and we hurtled over to organiser’s office...there were no more spare dogs so we agreed to run one team only (losing the £15 entry fee for the other one) and rotate Jed/ Bo and Rusty/Annie so at least they all got a turn. Jed - spot on apart from above. Bo - normally super fast but this time not that fast but PERFECT! Brought the ball straight back to me, no attempt to mug other dogs for it, managed changeovers with Rusty (Rusty is a grumpy dog!). The spare dog had only done practice before, she’d never run in competition with the lights, gazebos, noise etc and she did really well

So all in all although it was a starter’s competition and we could actually be in the big boy league we were very pleased with the result.

Ps. I found the car key 10 min’s ago! Georgina Now to add my bit. I did on occasions wonder what on earth I was doing as team captain, not only the stress of above fiasco, which was up to me to sort out, but also I was camping for the first time alone (except for six dogs!) Actually that went quite well, I daren’t say I enjoyed it and tempt fate for next time but… I was using one of those ‘pop up tents’ (the sort that cause great hilar ity when being packed away). They ‘pop up’ literally in seconds but you have to have studied the on line video many times before taking them down! I managed very well, although the crawling into such a low tent at my advanced age (sympathy vote here please) was enough to send me scuttling to Argos for a ‘bigger and better’ tent when I got home. Plus the motorway ran right alongside the camp site so ear plugs would have helped! On the final day I made sure I packed up the tent before people were up and about to avoid embarrassment, and then I did it so well I wished I’d waited so people could see how clever I was!

Our ‘Borrowed’ dog was a German Shepherd, Skye, her owners a lovely young couple from the Wilmslow Flyball team, they did really well and running f irst meant they had the ‘learning the lights’ experience they wanted. We had a borrowed box loader from the Sheffield Speeders; it was their dog that had come into season. Craig, a lovely young man, knew exactly what to do (he runs a Pointer in the first division) and made it look easy. Prior to all the losing of dogs etc. I had been going to box load for one team, Brenda the other, but we ended up having to run our dogs in the one team instead.

The long and the short of it, yes we’ll do it again and hope that having weathered this traumatic outing, we’ll find our next outing easy peasy! M aybe not, we are in division, not starters next time. It’s a good job I’m grey already! June Conway (Merlin’s M agicians)

A few points arising from teleconferences

Chairperson’s Resignation: Steve has decided to stand down from the Committee for personal reasons. Howard will be taking over as Chairperson with Moe taking on the Vice Chairperson’s role. The Committee has decided to wait, until after the Championships plus ongoing issues have been finalized, before filling the vacancy.

BFA Championships: Steve and Bridget will continue their work in the organization of the Championships. There will be four rings this year in order to accommodate the 41 divisions consisting of teams that have entered.

Lights: The Committee and in particular Dave Long are working hard to resolve the problems posed by the lights. All team captains and head judges have been advised of the ongoing work and a message was posted on the Webboard. [See also Howard’s comments in his Chairperson’s Slot. Ed.]

Rules and Policies: A working party of the Committee, having taken note of members’ comments, are to give the Rules a thorough overhaul before new ones are published in January. It is hoped that members finding anomalies will contact any member of the Committee with that information.

New Members and Teams: With the large increase in new team registrations it is becoming more difficult for teams to find suitable names. Some primary team names are becoming overused as secondary team names and will not be allowed in future. The team registration secretary will advise.

New Membership Secretary: Pat Wadby (Greetland Grasshoppers) has been appointed as our new Membership Secretary. We welcome her as an officer of the Association. Moe Hendry will continue as Team Registration Secretary.

Correspondence: The Committee has had several items that are currently still being investigated.

Teleconferences: These are being held monthly alternating days to accommodate members’ availability. Additional conferences are called for when needs arise.

Recognising a stroke

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps,

STR. Read and Learn! Doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

(i.e. It is sunny out today.)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue... If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

When It all comes right ~Gotta race

I had Roxanne from a puppy, her mum was a collie and her dad was a champion Sheltie. (That is why Roxanne is so very cute and pretty).

[Roxanne says:

One day my new mum came to see me. She gave me lots of kisses and cuddles and told me that very soon I would be going to live with her and her daughter. In my new home I would have some nice doggies to play with.

On the 8th September 2007 my new “Forever Mum” came to fetch me. She was really lovely and gave me lots of cuddles. Then we went for a long drive in her car and then we were at my new home.

I met my new sisters, Buffy and Megan. Megan was really nice to me and gave me lots of kisses. I think I upset Buffy though ‘cos she knocked out one of my teeth.]

I started training her for flyball as soon as possible. Having had problems with M egan I thought this time with more experience and a better idea of what I was supposed to be doing it should be easy.

However, Roxanne had other thoughts. Being small she had problems holding the ball, so to solve this we got her really small balls – her “bring its”. For weeks we worked on getting her up and down the lane wit h the ball. Finally she seemed to get the message – bring the ball back.

[Roxanne says:

Soon my Mum took me to flyball with Megan. I really couldn’t see the point in running down and getting the ball. My Mum was quite capable of getting it herself. After a while though I thought it might be nice to help her out (she is getting on a bit).]

If only this had been the only problem with her it would have been good. But, Roxanne may be small but she has a huge personality and is very stubborn when she wants.

For a long time Roxanne had to be lead dog because she was such a little madam. When I sent her she had to do a little spin before going down the lane. This is after she had bitten me – I had to wear protection on my arm for ages. Then when she started going down the lane she would suddenly stop and look back to see if we REALLY meant her to go down. Sometimes she would bring the ball straight back, sometimes she would stop somewhere along the way to think about it.

In the end when Roxanne was running we had people on the line shouting “Go, Go, Go”. I was unable t o call her or use my arms in any way or she would drop the ball. Eventually we progressed to Roxanne going last with me standing a few feet from the line calling her and clapping my hands to keep her concentration.

[Roxanne says:

Then it started getting really exciting and I started racing other dogs. I used to run at the front and when my mum put me down I would do a nice little twirl for her to let her know how clever I was. When I had finished I would go and get the ball. For some reason Mummy didn’t think this was quite the thing to do; so she started shouting “GO, GO, GO” when she put me down and everyone else copied her! I got s o excited that I forgot about my little twirl and just went and fetched the ball. (Mum said this took quite a long time to happen – but I’m not so sure!).]

Gradually all the little problems with Roxanne were solved, mine are still being worked on. And the defining moment of knowing she is a real Flyball dog was at Princes Risborough on 20th June 2010.

We were two legs to two against the other team and it was the last leg, Roxanne was last dog. She got to the box but the ball (as small balls sometimes like doing) came out of the box at the wrong angle, f lew over the top of the box, between the bars at the back of the box landing in the middle of the box. The

Page 21: Division Six Winners Marnicks - British Flyball Association 2010 Aug.pdf · The Europeans run a different format from us and all our teams ran in speed trials before ... spokespeople

opposite team got a light with their last dog so our only hope was that Roxanne would f ind her ball. Little Pocket Rocket that she is, she went round the back of the box, inside the box, got the ball, came back round, lined herself up with the jumps and came back over all four.

I was so proud of her and the fact that she was a pain in the rear when I started training her made it all the more sweet.

So if you have a dog that takes longer than the clever ones to pick it up, remember, the feeling of satisfaction when they do it right justifies all the sideways looks and sighs from other people. Patience is its own reward, not every dog is a natural but hard work and commitment will pay in the end.

I am so proud of my little Pocket Rocket.

[Roxanne says:

Now we go racing against other dogs lots and I am really good and I like to race the other dogs. Just because they have big legs doesn’t mean they can overtake me – I am Roxanne.

My name is Roxanne and I am cute and cuddly and pretty and adorable and everyone has to love me. So if you see me in the ring and want to help me you can always shout “Go, Go, Go” and I will run my fastest just for you. Because I am Roxanne and I “Gotta Race”.] Andrea James (M olten M agnets)

Warning: Can Children’s Soft Toys be lethal to Dogs?

This item was posted on our discussion board but originally came from another forum. Further investigation has revealed that the story’s origin is the USA. [I have put together the following account, gleaned from the posting on our discussion board and from my further research. Ed]

The vet’s account

Several years ago the vet had a young Lab come in that was very sick. The dog had eaten a toy made for a baby. When she opened the dog up to remove what she thought was an intestinal obstruction she found a huge gelatin type mess inside and the dog’s intestines were black and the tissue dead. The dog did not survive, there was no living intestine left from stomach to colon. This was not an obstruction ...

So she called the manufacturer of the toy on a quest to find out what the gel was and what killed the dog. It turns out that the stuffing in children's toys contains chemical treatment that renders fabrics less hospitable environments for the growth of bacteria, fungi and the like)! This chemical, while harmless to babies chewing on the outside of the toy, if ingested, is extremely toxic to the intestines.

Since then she has seen one other case with similar symptoms, the only known ingestion being the insides of the owner’s comforter. While this was not confirmed, it stands to reason that a comforter would be treated with the same type of chemical.

The email account: the most recent case was a young dog that had eaten a teddy bear, again it was not confirmed the stuffing was the same but the same symptoms and same appearance presented on exploratory surgery. The email seems to point the finger at the fire retardant used in the stuffing whereas the vet’s account seems to indicate the chemicals [which would include fire retardants? Ed] were responsible.

Before this claim about deadly stuffed toys is asserted as ‘true’ we need to consider that correlation is not the same as causation. It’s possible each of the dogs had something wrong with them that antedated their making meals of bedding or toys, with the connection to bedding and toys being made only after the vet asked the owner what their dogs had been up to prior to becoming ill. If treated fabric used in bedding and kids’ toys are the danger to pets they’re being represented as, other veterinarians are soon sure to weigh in with their own similar tales.

Now you would think a child's toy would be safe because it is for children, but they don't expect a child to eat the stuffing of the toys... huummmm that seems a bit scary too. But we all know dogs have powerful jaws and stuffed toys vended as children’s playthings aren’t generally manufactured to stand up to the chewing that many dogs would give them.

So please be cautious remove such items from your animals’ use and substitute play items specifically made for pets. Maybe some children's toys do not have this ingredient, but better to be safe than sorry. So meanwhile, make sure all your dog toys are for dogs.
