Lab for Planning and Architecture (LPA) is an international practice operating in a multi-scale way in the field of bioclimatic design and urbanism, optimizing the principles of ecological and sustainable development to the singularities of regions with warm and hot climates. The production of innovative solutions (Lab), the design of visions & processes (Planning) and the construction places and spaces (Architecture) define the singular approach to urban design and planning of LPA.

LPA was founded in 2002, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands), a city known by having the best weather in the world, and a privilege laboratory for testing the environmental and spatial potential of the geographies with “good weather”, and its connection with the advance practice of urbanism. LPA has offices in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Madrid.

The operative system of LPA is framed in the intersection of two ongoing revo-lutions: the emergence of an ecological era and the new possibilities offered by Information Technologies (IT). With the social dynamics and environmental singularities of the places with good weather—as raw material— and the po-tential of digital tools—as a processing tool—, LPA has developed its own work-ing methodology and has applied it in high sensitive environmental sectors such Leisure & Hospitality and Waterfronts & Maritime. The work of the office has been awarded in national and international competitions.

Urban and territorial development has become a complex enterprise whe-re strategic and technical aspects intermingle from the very beginning of the Project. With the idea of managing this new professional and cultural condition, LPA has set out three professional divisions: LPA Strategy, LPA Design and LPA Construction. The combination of these three divisions enables LPA to envision the whole process of development. Besides this, and thanks to the in-house presence of these three divisions along with its collaborators, LPA combines strategic, design and construction exper-tise within the work process, informing each other in a nonlinear way. By setting this three professional divisions, LPA aims to respond to this new emerging scenario where an integrative approach to planning and design will make possible to develop competitive and sustainable projects.

LPA Strategy provides consultancy in urban, landscape and territorial development, at the very initial phase - before design work. It provides the vision and the strategy that will make the project succeed. This division operates under the principles of sustainable development, and scopes strategies that engage the social, environmental and economical/market dimensions of the project. The production of a development strategy is highly trans-disciplinary. For this reason, LPA Strategy has teamed up with leading firms and experts in fields such as sustainability, energy, real estate and tourism. Some of the services delivered include feasibility studies, social participation, energy planning and sustainability certification. The project´s brief of the design phase is built upon the conclusions taken at the strategy phase.

LPA design provides full design and spatial planning services in the field of urbanism and landscape. This division is equipped with a robust design methodology based on the principles of bio-design and eco-systems thinking, which is optimized for regions with warm and hot climates. As a result, each project is designed for its integration within a natural, living dynamic, by finding optimal forms and organization that promote well-being, environmental enhancement and social innovation. This methodology is assisted with generative and parametric software, which enables the organic integration of the multiple components of the project and its context. This division engages with a broad range of collaborators and consultants. The capacities of this Division include the full design definition of projects, including a pre-calculus of all its services and structural components. As a BREEAM ES authorized firm, the project can first include a confirmed sustainable certification, once the project is approved and built.

LPA Construction provides full services in execution and construction management for urban and landscape projects. This division engages a team of architects and civil engineers that work with a broad range of collaborators and experts. The operations of this division are based on the intensive use of parametric and BIM (Building Information Modeling) software. These technologies enable the pre-building of a 5D (3D + cost + time) digital model of the project, which integrates physical information (architecture, structure, services, etc.) along with non-physical data: cost-estimation, environmental performance and construction phasing. This BIM-centric project management also makes possible the synchronic participation of the various participants (architects, engineers, construction managers, designers, etc.) that take part in the construction process. This integration is critical in order to avoid contradictions and over-cost risks. Finally, this technology enables the incorporation of sustainable construction protocols like BREEAM.
