Division Governors Message:by Guy Dawson, ACS/ALB

Empower Through EducationAs we begin another Toastmasters year, I feel privileged to

follow in the footsteps of the great leaders who have served as

Division D Governors. The examples you have set in yourspeech and actions inspired me to become a servant leader. I

appreciate your words of encouragement and the wisdom that

you continue to share with me.

Empower through Education is the Division D theme for 2013-

2014 because I feel that it reflects the true purpose of becoming

a Toastmaster. Every Toastmaster meeting or event ispresented to enrich its members through a multitude of

educational experiences. The Toastmaster system of personal

development encompasses the process of learning in everyaspect; from its manuals to the speaking and leadership roles

    that we fulfill.

Division D has a rich history of success and many of its clubshave been pivotal in the growth of Toastmasters in Southern

Nevada. Our seasoned members have set high standards of

excellence and we continue to nurture newer Toastmasters as

they learn Toastmaster procedures. This balance ofperspectives makes every meeting place a laboratory as each

member assumes the role of teacher and student.

One of the most valuable things I have learned as a Toastmaster

is the value of every member of our organization. As your

Division Governor, I am committed to fostering anenvironment in which each member receives the best possible

    public speaking and leadership education.

Member Feature:Toastmasters on the Radio by Guy Dawson, ACS/ALB

Division D Fosters a Wave of Radio Personalities

There has been a wave of Division D Toastmasters who have taken to

the airwaves as radio personalities. Steven Hollingsworth, ScottPritchard, Dawn Elizabeth Thompson, Al Jensen and yours truly have

all taken the communication skills we have developed in Toastmastersinto the broadcasting arena. Recently, I talked to my fellow radio

aficionados about the impact that broadcasting has had on their lives and careers.

I love to speak and being a radio host is an intensified way of speakingbecause its live and unpredictable, said Steven Hollingsworth, the host of

All in a Days Work which airs on vegasallnetradio.com. Hosting a

show also allows me to focus on my true passion- inspiring and helpingpeople find solutions to workplace dilemmas.

Dawn Elizabeth Thompson who appears as a guest

host on the Sex and Money Show on KLAV1230 AM described broadcasting as being like Table Topics onsteroids.

It has been an amazing experience, she said. I enjoy the

spontaneity of live radio and rolling with the punches.

Scott Pritchard said that he has a face for radio.

I am now cohosting a weekly show on relationships called I Hateem, but I Date em, he said. I am also doing a daily show on Fox

News Radio on sports betting called Before you BET it, make sure

    you GET it.

Thanks Toastmasters, I couldnt have done it without you, saidAl Jensen who is also a cohost of the Sex and Money Show. Being a member of

Toastmasters has really given me the confidence to go live, on the air, knowing that thereare literally thousands of people listening to my every word.

I must concur with my fellow broadcasters that speaking on the radio is an outstandingopportunity to display the skills we are learning as Toastmasters. My show

PR Connections w/Guy Dawson airs on KLAV 1230 AM everyWednesday at 1:00 pm.

Ask Dana: by Dana Wall-Oakley, DTMWhy have a club Newsletter?A club newsletter is an excellent way to share different types of information about your club with its

members. Important upcoming events, important past events, kudos, and officers reports are all

examples of information you can put in a club newsletter. There really is no limit. A newsletter can bea one-page flyer or 8+ pages depending on how much you want to share. It is a good idea to create a

newsletter at least every 3 months during the Toastmaster year. Your Vice President Public Relations is

responsible for creating and distributing a club newsletter. If that person is not good at newsletters, he

or she can create a committee and find someone in the club to help them. When I help our PR officercreate the Windjammer newsletter; we include messages from the officers, a word of the month, a

joke of the month, an inspirational quote of the month, fun facts about holidays for that particular time

period and special member feature articles. If a member or members of your club have done something

particularly noteworthy, such as publishing a book, have a child/grandchild, gotten married or events ofthat nature, we write an article about it to share with your fellow Toastmasters. If one of your members

attended a conference, they can write an article about that. Creating a club newsletter is also a great

way to involve the members with the happenings of the club. Members can contribute articles that theyhave written rather than the PR officer or his team writing all of the content. If

you have questions about how to get started with a club newsletter there are

recommended templates in the Toastmasters.org store or you can contact me [email protected], I can email a copy of the Windjammers newsletter I

created, as a sample for you. The most important thing is to have fun with it, a

newsletter can be FUN as well as informative.
