editor’s report

I can’t believe that we are already half way through the Key Club Year (Terms start and end in April). I am saddened yet excited by this fact; I am sad-dened by the fact that in only half a year we will be at District Convention of-ficially ending our terms and welcoming the new officers, but I am excited that we are entering that crucial time of the year where all of our efforts will come to fruition. Through the eagerness and leadership shown during the end of the school year and the summer, I am sure there will be a surge of new members we this year and that we will see growth in service and fundraising. I know that starting this month onward every is going to shift their service into high gear, whether that be in serving the community at an awareness walk, charity walk, fundraiser, or whatever other service events your club may have. Let’s go out and SERVE! To make the rest of our time even more worthwhile, try to get as many of your friends to join Key Club! While many clubs may have a deadline, Key Club does not! You can join at any time of the year because we want to give you the opportunity to be a part of this great organization no matter when you dis-cover that Key Club is a great service organization to be in. Be wary, though, because your club might add an extra late fee, so try turning in your dues as soon as possible. As always, you are free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns at my e-mail or cell-phone (information at end of Newsletter). I hope to see ALL of you very soon, whether that be at the October Division Council Meeting, November Division Council Meeting, or Fall Rally! I know we will expe-rience tremendous growth this year and ROAR out with Lion Pride!

Regional Training Conference

YEAH! We got Spirit!

ALISO NIGUELEnthusiasm and spirit surrounded me. Energy radiated from everyone that had gathered for the Key Club Regional Training Conference at Orange Coast College. I was eager to get to know my fellow Key Clubbers and learn more about what I could do to lend a hand in our community. I wanted to represent our school and division in the best possible way.Obviously, I had a blast. Aliso Niguel’s Key Club was well represented, racking up a solid eleven people out of the twenty-nine from our division that came. They were many

workshops I could attend and feel that I was learning something more about Key Club. Everyone was so welcoming, and there was so much excitement in the atmosphere from all of the returning members. We newcomers learned the Key Club chant, which went a little something like, “I feel good! Oh, I feel so good! ... Aboooga booga boooga!” Also, I found out about all the fun activities, such as Fall Rally and DCON, that were approaching, which got me to pumped up for this upcoming year!

On October 15th, Aliso Niguel’s Key Club attended the Walk to End Alzheimer in Doheny Beach. They raised over $75,000 from donations received by the walkers. The Walk to End Alzheimer supports over 45,000 groups that are in need of help. We had only three volunteers including Andre Nguyen, Stephanie Javadi, and myself, but I have never seen a more spirited group. Our duty was to cheer on the walkers. We had purple thunder sticks (or bambams), pompoms, horn blowers, and whistles to get the spirit going.

Our chant was, “Yeah, we got spirit! Yeah, we got spirit! Yeah, we got what...what... what...Yeah, we got spirit!!!” Andre kept blowing the horn, while Stephanie and I yelled to get the walkers pumped. To see their smiling faces was rewarding, and we just had a great time volunteering. The organization took numerous photos of us and placed it on their website. We believe that one day there will be a cure for Alzheimer, and we want to help people feel the hope for that chance.

What I look forward to in Key Club this year are all the social events and activities. There are so many that we can choose from but I don’t have the time to do them all. I am looking forward to all the volunteering events that I can do so that I can be able to put all of those community service hours on my résumé. Since it is my senior year, I want to enjoy all of these activities and make them the most memorable that

they can be. Another thing I am looking forward to is meeting new people. I enjoy meeting new friends at the social events and key club meetings. All of the officers in key club are very helpful and I am looking forward to getting to know them better. The biggest thing that I am looking forward to in key club would be all the good memories that will be made from social events, activities, and meetings.

CAPO VALLEYThe bake sale was a sweet success! We raised a good amount to support our members’ funds. This success was due most of all to our wonderful bake sale organizers and volunteers. We held the bake sale at our town’s center. At the bake sale, the volunteers were sure to put on a spirited show. Their enthusiasm and eagerness were what fueled the sale. What we initially thought would be a little bake sale erupted into

a community frenzy. There was an endless line of hungry attendees, waiting to buy some of our delicious baked goods. This was what we accomplished within the 4 hours we worked together as a team. It was definitely a success and we were proud to beam with pride our love for Key Club.

Harry Potter to OC Book Fest! Pick your house, grab your broomstick. It’s time for Quidditch! This year for the OC Book Festival at Orange Coast College, Capo decided to bring the magic of Harry Potter to the young kids by having them test their skills in the sport we all read about and learned to love. Players of all ages gathered to show off their abilities and represent their houses. Each took his or her stance before the ring-goals and had three tries to score with the quaffle (tennis ball) against another opponent, with three points giving them double the tickets. No matter what house each person represented – Gryffindor or Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw – everyone had fun reenacting one of the greatest magical sports of our time! Although we had some technical difficulties at the beginning with the spelling of our sign (Quittich), Capo had a fantastic

number of volunteers and participants. The booth also did well, drawing much attention from the crowd because of our club’s enthusiasm and the book’s overall popularity. The other schools in 41South had amazing booths as well--especially San Juan Hills and Tesoro, who seemed to have popped out from nowhere (no offense). The entire Book Festival ran relatively smoothly; however, the weather made standing out in the sun almost unbearable. Dang…it was HOT!! Next year, I expect Key Club 41 South to come back with more members and more entertainment. To anyone who hasn’t been to the OC Book Festival yet, I highly recommend you check it out in the future. The festival is a perfect opportunity to make new friends and enjoy many attractions based on the books we all love.

During the months of September and October, El Toro Key Club was been preparing for the upcoming school year with an insurgence of new members! Club Rush was on October 7, and we had multiple ways to increase the number of sign-ups for our club, including posters, walking sign-ups, flags, bam bams, pom poms, clothespin tagging, and a member walking around in a Trick-or-Treat UNICEF box. By the end of the 10 minute snack period, we managed to

get over 230 people signed up for Key Club. On October 12, we had our first meeting of the school year, with a promising 200 people--it was a full house. We presented a slide show giving information about Key Club, some benefits of joining, examples of fun events, and we also played awesome music. El Toro Key Club was also contacted by the school board and was recognized at a meeting. Our club was also featured in the school newspaper.

This past month, El Toro High School Key Club has represented their club in many different ways. To start things off, we hosted The First DCM (Division Council Meeting) of the school year which was held at Cousteau Park, and we also had a “Key Club 101” workshop, hosted by ETHS Key Club President: Kimberly Lee and Sophomore Representative: Joseph Olmo. A very important “Key Member” that helps everyone in each and every Key Club is the Advisors. Towards the end of September, Kimberly Lee and Denise Bui attended the installation dinner of Lake Forest Kiwanis officers of 2011-2012 at Outback Steakhouse. One of the many events we have volunteered at for this month is

Relay for Life; an event dedicated to members of society that have fought, died, or survived in the battle against Cancer. Another event that we volunteered at was The OC Book Fair. At the OC Book Fair, many different clubs from Key Club and Kiwins made little game booths. The many game booths were based on a children’s book. The book El Toro chose was “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. The game consisted of 3 tennis balls and a huge pyramid of cans with very colorful designs. The object of the game was to knock down the Pyramid tower with the 3 tennis balls given. The following week, RTC (Regional Training Conference) was held at the same place as The OC Book

Festival, Orange Coast College. The RTC contained many spirited divisions from region 3 and had co-ed workshops with Kiwins. Sadly I was the only one from my club at the RTC, and things were pretty awkward, until I met the District Treasurer: CJ Van. Along with Anmol Bal (LHHS President), Cj and I made an epic team name and pretty much owned everyone else. Towards the end of Oct. Kimberly and I represented El Toro at CHOC WALK. At CHOC WALK everyone in Key Club represented Team Kiwanis. The walk was really long and very fun! Throughout the walk I probably met lots of new people, and left pretty weird or interesting impressions…. ☺

TESOROTitan CLUB RUSH!After a long summer, Tesoro Key Club was thrilled to get the 2011-2012 year started with our annual Club Rush! This year, our Key Club got over 200 members to sign up with our traditional lock and key activity. This is a THS tradition where new members pick up a key at Club Rush and bring it to the first meeting to see if their key opens the Titan Lock! The winning key gets a prize bag that starts their journey of service as part of the THS Key Club. President Alexandra Ivanov comments, “Club Rush was super exciting and action packed! All the screaming and rallying had me lose my voice the next day!” Although the school year has only begun, THS Key Club has events already planned for our members. In order to reach and hopefully surpass our Lieutenant Governor’s hundred-dollar goal before Fall Rally, we plan on holding a bake sale, where we will accept donations only, in front of pavilions in Rancho Santa Margarita. It will also be the first event that our members can attend.

In addition to all of this fun excitement, THS Key Club will be hosting this month’s District Council Meeting on Sunday October 30th , from 3:00-4:30 at Olympiad Park in Rancho Santa Margarita. Be sure to bring all of your club members and your Halloween spirit! This year is off to a great start, and it’s going to be the best in Titan history!

TRABUCO HILLSJust two days after our first post-club rush meeting, Tesoro Key Club spent Sunday holding an open donation bake sale to raise money for Choc Hospital and Pediatric Trauma Program in hopes of achieving the one hundred dollar goal. From the early morning, members (new and old) screamed for their cause, attracting the attention of the 11 AM Pavilions crowd. As the day pressed on the donations filled up the key club vase, as even shoppers lacking a sweet tooth dropped by to give money. Many members acted as human signs, sporting large posters on their fronts and backs. Of course, the bright posters and

happy members were not the only sources of attention. Plates of chocolate chip cookies, snicker doodles, Nutella brownies, pumpkin muffins, mummy cupcakes, and a rum cake (all home-made) drew shoppers (and their kids) in. Members of the Mission Viejo Kiwanis Club were also a strong beacon of support, stopping by to help maintain the worthy cause. By the end of the day, the Tesoro Titans had raised 385 dollars! Now fully prepared for Fall Rally, Tesoro is excited to carry on its spirit at Six Flags and keep district LTG Byran Yang from being “bought” by other divisions.

October and candy go hand in hand. Our Key Club meetings and events are no different. In the month of October, candy is the reward we all crave for. In an event sponsored by the Kiwanis of Lake Forest, Harvest Festival was a Halloween themed event with a maze, Harry Potter house, games, and candy. Little kids would dress up in costumes and receive candy from different candy stations. Those cute and inventive costumes definitely made our night better. With twenty seven people from Trabuco Hills volunteering, it was a busy event. Our volunteers divided up into different jobs to help with event become a success. I was stationed at the Harry Potter house with two new members, Becca Malkin and Michelle

Hafen. Michelle and I collected tickets and checked for wristbands while Becca opened the magic curtain to the Harry Potter world. The time passed quickly and all of us received the opportunity to meet Harry Potter! He was really into his character and took pictures with us as if he was a real wizard. I had numerous memories from the experience, but my favorite was running across the park to steal candy from another booth so that Harry Potter would have more candy to pass out. After three years of volunteering at this event, I was extremely pleased that my expectations met reality. Harvest Festival was another successful event and after talking to many members, they enjoyed it as well.

From September 26th to September 30th, Laguna Hills High School had its annual club rush! Of course, the LHHS Key Club board was on top of it. We made many signs and posters in order to advertise our club as much as possible. We had our entire board, and a few returning members, help out with the event. On the first day of Club Rush, we arrived at our designated table, armed with our weapons of spirit and advertisement. We had signs and posters ready to be seen; our colors

of blue and yellow painted the school. While we shouted our cheers and waved our signs, multitudes of students of all ages came to sign up. They couldn’t help but be attracted to our wild and spirited attitudes. We continued this for five days, and with every day that passed, more and more people signed up! In the end LHHS Key Club accumulated nearly 200 sign ups! It was quite a successful week! I look forward to this year, and I feel it’ll be a great and productive one!

October is here and you know what that means--Club Rush! Mission Viejo High School just had their Club Rush, which is the day where we attempt to pull in new members. We had been planning in advance what we were going to be doing at the rush, and at our first meeting. We even made a flag! Luckily we had a great turnout. At our first meeting everyone was interested and pumped; we had ice breakers, people bought shirts, and many showed interest in future events. This

month we plan to have a bake sale taking place at Mission Viejo Library, on the afternoon of October 29th. Here we’ll be selling baked goods to raise money for PTP. The goods will be sold based on donations, and will come from the members. This month we also plan to collect money for trick-or-treat UNICEF. Getting people interested to go to Fall Rally and buy shirts is also what we’ve been doing, and will continue to do.

On October 29th MVHS Key Club held a bake sale at the Mission Viejo Library where we sold baked goods provided by members. The point of this was to raise money to cover dues, since we were unable to collect any. If the member helped out in any way for example selling or baking, we covered the 11 dollars for them. We successfully raised over 400 dollars. Every two months we decided to recognize a

member who has don’t ore than all the others by giving them the title “Member of The Month” including a certificate and gift. This Month it was Isabelle Shumski. Isabelle has attended all the events we held along with our meetings, I was very happy to present it to her. This month our club plans on helping out at Turkey Trot in Dana Point and a holiday boutique a Del Lago Elementary School in early December.

I would like to apologize for the late newsletter. A series of events just happened to occur around the 20th and didn’t allow me the time I would have liked to create the newsletter.

However, there is something that I did want to address. The first newsletter had a great response, almost overwhelming. Fast forward about 5 months, and the amount of submissions has dwindled to an amount that almost scares me.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed, but I do understand that many of you are busy. A simple submission of photos would help me greatly! As you may notice, the front cover does not have a picture, and this was done purposefully. The newsletter loses its vibrance and vitality when there are no solutions.

Every newsletter is basically a living branch of our division. Without nurture, it loses it’s vigor and soon
