    SEGAL FAMiLy ENDOWS BBA SCHOLARSHiP FUNDUniversity o Michigan alumnus Merton Segal, AB 50and his wie, Beerl Segal, recently established the Merton and Beverly Segal Family Scholarship Fund with a$1 million endowment to support southeast Michigan BBA students who demonstrate nancial need.     Innovation in the BBA Program is a top

    priority or Deana Dv-bk, supported

    by a recent Carnegie Foundation report citing

    business as one o the most popular under-graduate majors, at 21 percent nationally.

    Potential curriculum changes include an

    introductory course to open the core, with

    an intensive capstone at the conclusion. The

    BBA Faculty Committee also is considering

    ways to allow students to study abroad

    or a semester. In addition, the committee

    designed a minor or non-Michigan Ross

    students that could begin in 2013.

    Our goal is to ensure a transormational

    experience or our BBA students, says ly

    Prry Wt, associate dean o under-graduate programs and clinical associate

    proessor o strategy and management and

    organizations. Her team includes Pu Krh

    managing director o the BBA Program, and

    Wm Pr, director o BBA admissions.

    Admission to the three-year program is

    extremely competitive. This all, the incoming

    class will grow by an additional 80 students,

    or a total class o 500. Preerred admission,

    where students apply directly rom high

    school and begin the program as sophomores

    remains highly selective. The 2010 preerred

    admission process saw 1,283 applicants or 110

    spots, with an average high school GPA o

    3.9. Ninety-nine o those students entered the

    BBA Program the ollowing all, and their

    U-M GPA was 3.6. Last year, regular admission

    applicants totaled 1,053 or 322 spots. Their

    average reshman GPA at U-M was 3.6.

    Were confdent we can increase the

    size o the BBA Program and maintain our

    current level o quality, says Wooten.

    As an entrepreneur and venture capitalist,

    Michigan Gov. Rk sydr, bGs 77/Mba 79/

    JD 82, knows frsthand the value created byconnecting the U.S and India. Hes anxious to

    strengthen ties between the worlds two largest

    democracies but worries that artifcial, not national,

    boundaries are getting in the way.

    I you look at the uture o human and business

    relationships across the globe, youre seeing those

    boundaries grow, Snyder said in his keynote

    address at the 2011 India Business Conerence.

    Thats backward.

    Theres too much or each nation to gain

    economically, culturally, and educationally to let

    that happen, he said. The success o this world is

    about making those boundaries dissolve.

    U.S. and India share many common concerns,

    rom political issues like security and terrorism to

    socioeconomic imperatives like jobs and human

    development.

    When we talk about partnership and coopera-

    tion, its about energy, health, education, science,

    technology, and business, noted the Indian envoy

    to the U.S. This partnership is about making

    a dierence in peoples lives.

    Rao encouraged business students to look

    East, reminding them that Indias GDP has grownsteadily at about eight to 10 percent per year.

    as the country looks to grow inrastructure and

    spark innovation in clean energy, agriculture,

    communication, and health.

    In 2009, with the U.S. auto industry

    reeling amid a severe recession, some

    questioned whether an ailing Chrysler

    Group was worth saving. CEO srgMrh, whod previously

    engineered Fiats comeback, wasnt

    cowed by public opinion. He saw

    value in Chrysler just as he had in

    Fiat years beore.

    The people o Fiat and Chrysler

    come rom dierent paths and

    dierent parts o the world, but they

    have one thing in common, Marchionne

    recently told a packed audience in Blau

    Auditorium. Both have been to hell

    and back.

    My colleagues and I are survivors,

    he continued. The tough decisions

    we make at Fiat and Chrysler today

    are inormed by the experience o

    near-extinction.

    Chrysler emerged rom an orderly

    Chapter 11 in 2009 thanks to govern-

    ment loans; Fiats ownership stake;

    and sacrifces made by employees,

    creditors, and lenders.

    But the speed and depth o Chrysler

    turnaround surprised nearly everyone.

    Thats partly due to the tools Fiatprovided Chrysler via the merger, such

    as technology and quality small-car

    architectures. Its also due, in part, to

    Chryslers new senior leadership.

    crisis, the private equity world is shaking out by

    way o natural selection, according to industry

    leaders at the Michigan Private Equity

    Conerence in October.

    The industry is in the refective phase

    ater the heart attack, said Stewart Kohl,

    co-CEO o New York-based the Riverside Co.

    He keynoted the co nerence, presented by

    the Samuel Zell and Robert H. Lurie Institute

    or Entrepreneurial Studies and the Center or

    Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance.

    to those who have done an outstanding job

    we do not have a social consensus. Why is that? Homan asked o the scientists, religious

    leaders, politicians, social scientists, and students who attended the event, presented

    by the Frederick A. and Barbara M. Erb Institute or Global Sustainable Enterprise.

    Homan was joined by stv Pry, Mba 72, retired CEO o BP America and now

    director o Omnova Solutions Inc., who said the market seems to have accepted the reality

    o climate change, making the ongoing debate eel like old news. Its hard to fnd a major

    corporation now that doesnt have a program around climate change, he said.

    So why do other sectors in society remain unconvinced? Homan, director o the Erb Institute

    and the Holcim (U.S.) Proessor o Global Sustainable Enterprise, cites lack o knowledge about

    the scientifc process and a mistrust o science in general. Human nature plays a part as well.

    Most Michigan Ross MBAs say theyll

    never orget their Multidisciplinary ActionProject (MAP). But the Chicago and Los

    Angeles alumni clubs prove it. Both are using

    MAP principles to improve their communities

    through Chicagos Alumni MAP (A-MAP)

    and L.A.s MAP-in-a-Day.

    Since 2009 the Chicago club has partnered

    with the Taproot Foundation, a national orga-

    nization that matches business proessionals

    with nonprofts needing their expertise. It

    recently began its ourth Taproot collabora-

    tion, helping Ballet Chicago develop a brand

    strategy and marketing materials.Because Taproot requires a multi-month

    commitment, alumni gain a rich experience,

    says Hugh Jdw, Mba 04. He championed

    the clubs Nonproft Initiative (now A-MAP)

    rom its inception. Since then, more than

    a dozen alumni have participated.

    People want to have a bigger impact

    than just racking up man-hours at dierent

    projects, Jedwill says. This model lets us do

    the same deep dive we did or MAP and use

    our skills to better a nonproft cause.

    Alumni arent the only ones rolling up their

    sleeves at Ballet Chicago. This spring theorganization hosted its frst Michigan Ross

    student MAP team. Alumni acted as mentors

    or the students and also gave them a Windy

    City welcome.

    Getting the student MAP team makes a

    statement about the leadership o Ross in our

    community, Jedwill says. Additionally,

    students see the strength o our network,

    while alumni meet current students and reect

    on the value o their own time on campus.

    It osters deeper connections all around.

    Meanwhile, the L.A. club developed amodel to encourage members to volunteer

    despite their busy schedules. Our alumni

    wanted to do something tactical and brie,

    says presidentadrw buhmp, Mba 00.

    I am so proud o how this team persevered to

    fnd a partner that could beneft rom this vision.

    The L.A. team, led by R nrd, Mba 06,er Grhm, Mba 09, and Krmh

    (Mm) Kw, Mba 05, ultimately

    signed on with Schools on Wheels, a tutoring

    service or homeless children. Over the

    course o a day, the team recommended how

    to improve the nonprofts approach to donor

    solicitation and volunteer recruitment.

    It was classic Michigan teamwork in action,

    Knowles says. We immediately fgured out

    our specialties and divided into subteams

    to attack the problem.

    MAP-in-a-Day also provided a new way

    or club members to engage with each other.Theres something signifcant about getting

    your hands dirty and working through business

    challenges that bonds a group together in

    a way social events dont, says Graham.

    But Nordin stresses the end o the day

    wasnt the end o the story.

    We didnt want them to say, Thats

    wonderul, and be done, he says. We want

    to know the results and will ollow up to see

    the impact we made.

    Based on the success o the frst eort, the

    club is planning additional projects this year.And regardless o the approach, club MAP

    projects add value, says Chicago president
