A Message from Our Board of Directors Liaison to the D&I Committee…

Mia FarberDiversity and Inclusion

Committee Liaison

I am very excited to report that the Office D&I Co-ordinators are off and running and already sharing a lot of exciting ideas. Soon we are going to be rolling out a training program on how to conduct structured behavioral interviews, which will help to weed out unconscious bias during the interview process.

Finally, and significantly, our Board unanimously recommended to the equity partners that we add a D&I seat to the Board of Directors. Specifically, we proposed a seat on the Board for attorneys who are traditionally under-represented both in the legal profession and within our firm.

Weldon H. LathamDiversity and Inclusion

Committee Chair

A Word from Our Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chair… At Jackson Lewis, we approach diversity and in-clusion from multiple angles, and seek to have our internal D&I activities support our external D&I and marketing activities, and vice versa. A good example of this is an event I recently hosted at my home for the County Executive of Prince George’s County, Maryland, Rushern Baker, who is running for Governor of Maryland. If elected, Mr. Baker will only be the third African American in United States history ever elected Governor of a state.

Special political guests included U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD), and County Executive of Montgomery County, MD, Ike Leggett, as well as other state and local elected officials.

In addition, attendees included CEOs and senior executives of both national and regional companies, as well as more local employers. Mike Hatcher (DC) served as a Co-Host for the event, which was also supported by John Bryson (DC), Courtney Malveaux (RICH), Gobriella Davis (DC), Brad Hammock (DC), Brooks Amiot (BAL), David Nagle (RICH), Emmett McGee (BAL), Steve Silvestri (BAL), Forrest Read (RAL), Donnie English (BAL), and John Remy (DC).

Diversity Manager’s Update...As you know from previous editions of this news-letter, our Chairman, Vincent Cino, has joined a network of CEOs throughout the country by signing the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion Pledge to advance diversity and inclusion in our workplace. By signing the Pledge, Vinny has committed himself and the firm to continuing to cultivate a workplace where diverse perspectives and experiences are welcomed and respected, and where employees feel encouraged to discuss

problems and suggestions in an open forum. As evidence of his—and the firm’s—commitment to diversity and inclusion, and as part of our participation in CEO Action, Vinny published a blog post on “How Corporate America Can Help Reinforce The Best Of America,” which was published on HuffPost. I encourage you to read it by clicking here.

Vinny also participated in a CEO-only Summit on November 10th, with more than 65 CEOs of major companies, non-profits, and colleges and universities.

On another note, I would like to welcome new principal, Rachel Muñoz, to the firm. Rachel is in the Boston of-fice and provides counsel and training to clients in various industries, including higher education, the public sector, transportation, waste management, and medical

technology. She is an active member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (“NACUA”). Welcome, Rachel!

Attorney Resource Group UpdatesThe Attorney Resource Group Chairs provided the following updates on behalf of their members. Please note that our diverse attorneys regularly receive accolades for their professional and community activities. They contribute articles and give presentations on a broad range of topics, and they attend a variety of conferences and meetings. The items below, however, specifically pertain to diversity-related activities.

African American ARG | Led by Maurice Jenkins (DET) and Marlo Johnson Roebuck (DET)

Donald English (BAL) is one of the founders of the Baltimore Diverse Partners Network, which had a recent event recognizing Toyja Kelley for his election as President of the Defense Research Institute, and Craig Thompson for his election as President of the International Association of Defense Counsel. The Baltimore Diverse Partners Network is also planning a holiday event that is well attended by local in-house counsel. Donald also attended the awards banquet for the Maryland Minority Contractors Association.

Julie Tong (BAL) attended the Legends of the Boardroom event.

Tracie Maurer (ATL) created and conducted a simulation seminar on “To Fire or Not to Fire—A Workplace Investigation into Transgender, Progressive Discipline, and Termination Issues.” It was informative, interactive, and overall fun. The “witnesses” included both attorneys from the Atlanta office and members of the audience who participat-ed based on scripts Traci prepared.

New Associate Sapna Jain (ATL) is a graduate of Emory Law School and clerked with the firm during the summer of 2016. Welcome Sapna!

Terri Freeman (MOR) and Tracey Wallace (DAL) attended the Corporate Counsel Women of Color’s 13th Annual Career Strategies Conference in New Orleans. CCWC’s mission is to foster diversity and empowerment. CCWC was formed in 2004 to provide a support network to in-house women attorneys of color and to promote the national and international advancement of women of color in the legal profession and workplace. This year’s sold out conference had ap-proximately 1,000 attendees, included numerous panel discussions, and featured speakers including Daymond John, Susan L. Taylor, Christy Haubegger and Suze Orman. Juliette Pryor, Senior Vice Pres-ident, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Cox Enterprises, Inc., was honored. The event was an excellent opportunity to connect with existing clients and make new connections.

Maurice Jenkins (DET) presented on the topic of JL D&I Coordi-nators, as well as on strategies to optimize personal / professional development and success by embracing and leveraging diversity, at the JL New Associates Academy (“NAA”) in Chicago.

Asian American ARG | Led by Tanya Bovée (HFD) and Monica Khetarpal (CHI)

On September 7th, Monica Khetarpal and James Botana (both CHI) attended the South Asian Bar Association’s Chicago Chapter annual gala. They were joined at their table by three Illinois trial and appellate court judges and the Chairman of the Board of Chicago’s Indo American Center (“IAC”). The IAC provides classes and services to Chicago’s low income South Asian immigrant community. James and Monica also donated an item for the SABA silent auction, which raised funds for various charitable causes benefiting the South Asian community.

The Hartford office sponsored the South Asian Bar Association of Connecticut Annual Rewards Dinner on September 13th. The key-note speaker was Khizr Khan, the Gold Star parent who rose to prom-inence during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Mara Finkelstein, Alexa Farmer, and Tanya Bovée (all HFD) attended.

On September 25th, Monica Khetarpal (CHI) and Maurice Jenkins (DET) presented at the New Associate’s Academy about the firm’s diversity and inclusion initiatives. The team described the importance

of D&I to our firm’s culture and business. Monica described the goals and leadership of each Attorney Resource Group, including the Asian American ARG, and encouraged all new attorneys to get involved.

On September 29th, Victor Corpuz (DAL) moderated a fireside chat with A.B. Cruz III, Retired Navy Admiral and Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of the Shared Services organization of USAA, at the 10th Annual Dallas Asian American Bar Association Awards Night (“DAABA”). The event is the largest fundraiser for DAABA and typical-ly generates over $50,000 each year for scholarships and grants. The firm sponsored the event and has been a consistent sponsor over the past 10 years. Victor was the 2012 DAABA President and was on the Planning Committee for Awards Night for several years.

The Hartford office sponsored the Connecticut Asian Pacific Amer-ican Bar Association’s 17th Annual Dinner on October 5th. Sarah Skubas, Allison Dearington, Tanya Bovée (all HFD) attended.

Hispanic ARG | Led by James Botana (CHI) and Jason Gavejian (MOR)

The Hispanic ARG just wrapped up its busiest quarter to date having great success increasing the firm’s visibility as a leader in diversity and inclusion.

But first…Please join us in congratulating Pedro Torres-Díaz (MIA) who just concluded his term as President of the Hispanic National Bar Association (“HNBA”)! Through Pedro’s leadership, the HNBA had its most successful—and profitable—Corporate Counsel Conference ever. Pedro’s service as President provided the firm with outstanding opportunities to sponsor, host, moderate, and participate in numerous events throughout the country. Pedro guided the HNBA through some extremely difficult times—from policy directives of the new admin-istration which adversely affect the Hispanic community, to natural disasters in Houston, Miami, and Puerto Rico. Pedro’s calm and steady leadership through such difficult times will surely be missed by the HNBA. While Pedro’s term as President has come to an end, he will continue his active participation with the organization as Immediate Past-President.

Pedro has been appointed by ABA President Hilarie Bass to the ABA’s Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Legal Profession.

Speaking of the HNBA, its Annual Convention was held from Septem-ber 6th - September 9th. Our presence as a firm was second to none. In addition to Pedro serving as HNBA President, Jason Gavejian (MOR) served on the HNBA National Leadership Team as CLE Chair. Through Pedro and Jason’s efforts, the firm had 4 different speakers present at the Annual Convention:

• Amy Peck (OMA): The Immediate and Long-Term Impact of President Trump’s Executive Orders on Our Communities (PlenarySession);

• Greg Alvarez (MOR): Hot Topics in Employment Discrimination Litigation (CLE);

• Guillermo Escobedo (SD): Changing Workplaces – Changing Employment Laws (CLE);

• Jason Gavejian (MOR): How to Conduct a Cyber Investigation(CLE).

In addition to Pedro, Jason, and each of the speakers, the firm was represented at the Annual Convention by James Botana (CHI), Monica Khetarpal (CHI), Richard Greiffenstein (MIN), and Angela Quiles Nevarez (PHI).

The HNBA Annual Convention concluded with a gala on September 9th. At the gala, James delivered the remarks of our Chairman, Vinny Cino, and warmed up the crowd for Pedro’s daughter, Natalia, who spoke eloquently in introducing her father. As parents, we don’t want our children to follow in our footsteps, we want them to walk next to

us and go further than we ever dreamt possible—needless to say, Na-talia is well on her way. Pedro’s end-of-term speech was bittersweet, but put the finishing touches on an amazing term as HNBA President.

We continue to have a number of attorneys throughout the country taking positions of leadership with local and national bar associations. If you are interested in becoming more involved with HNBA or one of your local bar associations, feel free to reach out to James, Pedro, or Jason to find out what we can do individually or as a firm to support your efforts.

One of our objectives for the rest of 2017 and into 2018 will be to continue to coordinate with all other ARGs to identify, recruit, and retain minority attorneys. To help guide these efforts, we recently revised the Hispanic ARG mission statement, which we wanted to share with all of you:

The Jackson Lewis Hispanic-American Resource Group is an integral part of the firm’s goals for diversity and inclusion. Through collaboration, outreach and mentoring, the Hispanic ARG’s mission is to help the firm improve the recruitment and retention of Hispanic-American attorneys at all levels, including grass roots efforts to help increase the pipeline of aspiring Hispanic attorneys from every level of education. The Hispanic ARG’s mission is also to help create more opportunities for the firm’s Hispanic-American attorneys to fully participate in the professional and business opportunities offered by the firm, and to be included in all positions of leadership within the firm. The Hispanic ARG will work with all the firm’s attorneys and resource groups to ensure Jackson Lewis continues to be a leader in the areas of diversity and inclusion.

On September 15th, Jackson Lewis co-sponsored the National Association of Women Lawyers conference entitled “Meeting the Chal-lenge” in Boston, MA. The conference focused on identify-

ing ways in which institutions can increase the number of women in leadership roles and provided tips and strategies for female attorneys seeking to advance their careers.
