Moreton Bay Region is now home to one of the most accessible beaches in South East Queensland.

Launched at Woorim Beach during Disability Action Week in September, a new accessible beach mat now paves the way across the sand for all ages and abilities to enjoy a day at the beach.

We’re incredibly proud to be working in partnership with the Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club on the accessible beaches trial.

With approximately 1 in every 5 people living with some form of disability, council is passionate about ensuring our services, infrastructure and programs are inclusive and accessible for everyone to participate.

Council has also been working closely with Centacare Moreton Bay, to provide two beach wheelchairs, which can be hired through the Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club for use on weekends and public holidays in safe weather conditions.

Since adopting our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan just over 12 months ago council has undertaken a number of projects to improve access and inclusion of people with disabilities in community life including new accessible toilets at Albany Creek and Redcliffe libraries.

In The Hills District, construction is currently under way on the largest purpose-built all-abilities recreation facility in the region. This follows the opening of the popular CREEC all-abilities playground at Burpengary last year.

We’ve also commenced design for a new pedestrian ramp at Redcliffe’s Suttons Beach, which will make way for the introduction of beach wheelchairs and matting at one of our most popular beaches.

A number of initiatives have also been delivered to improve the accessibility of council programs including introduction of a low sensory hour at the Redcliffe Museum and AUSLAN Storytime at libraries across Moreton Bay.

Things of interest for Div. 8

Swooping season Spring is prime time for native birds to begin swooping as a defensive behaviour to protect their young. While magpies are well-known for swooping, it’s estimated that only 9% of magpies swoop. Other swooping birds include plovers, butcherbirds, crows, noisy minors, pewees and noisy friarbirds.

NEW BOUNDARY for DIVISION 8 The next Council election is in March 2020. Before every election the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) asks Councils to report on their divisional boundaries with regard to the number of voters in each division and how many divisions are out of tolerance. Tolerance is plus or minus 10% above the average number of voters. MBRC had 4 out of the 12 divisions out of tolerance and one was very close.

As we had so many out of tolerance the ECQ called for public submissions as to how the boundaries could be realigned to achieve all divisions being in tolerance and, with an eye to the future, them still being so at the following election in 2024.

MBRC lodged a submission which had minor changes in most of the region but more significant changes to Divisions 10, 9, 8, 7 and 4.

There were submissions from members of the community as well. The ECQ did look at our submission and community comment then did their own reallocation which was even more futuristic.

I am very happy with the result which now sees the entire suburbs of Strathpine, Bray Park, Lawnton and Petrie in Division 8. This will make it very easy for voters on election day as all they have to know is the suburb in which they live. Pine Valley Estate from Joyner and a little bit of Kurwongbah up to Lakeside Raceway were also added in as they follow major road or rail boundaries.

These boundaries haven’t been officially announced as yet. (I’m writing this in late August) As soon as they are I will be sending all households a personal letter confirming the new boundaries.

It will be with regret that I farewell all the people in Warner, Joyner and Cashmere that I have got to know over the last 12 years but I look forward to the challenge of getting to know the new residents of the new division.

I am still the councillor on the old boundaries until the election so if you have any problems please still call me. The former areas of Division 8 in Warner, Cashmere and Joyner now go to Division 9.
