Our next unit will be covering the Civil Rights movement.

While Mrs Kellum’s Economic class is studying the basic concepts of Economics such as scarcity, opportunity costs, trade offs and factors of production. • PERKINS MIDDLE SCHOOL: This Week’s Average Daily Attendance: 96.11 Average Daily Attendance: 95.62 Total Enrollment: 176

From The Principal’s Desk It’s always a great day to be a Cubcat. Not much to report this week. We are so excited to be starting the 2nd semester. This also means that testing season is coming up soon. We know that our students are working hard and will do well. This week we had some exciting girls’ basketball. All games were close. As we get our first semester grades completed, we are now in the process of scheduling parent conferences as well as truancy meetings. In any school year, but especially one such as this, it is so vitally important for all students to be at school each day in order to learn.

In the Classroom From Coach Swanner: 7th grade Texas History: This week in Coach Swanner’s class, students are learning about The Lone Star State. We first covered how Texas gained its statehood and became part of the United States. Next, we went over the Early State Government System and learned how there were many issues in Politics with Texas joining the United States. To wrap up the chapter, students got a better understanding of The U.S.-Mexican War. They got to see how Texas and The United States helped each other to claim territories from Mexico, west of Texas all the way to the Pacific Ocean. From Mrs Stovall: ELAR----After reading several argumentative passages and essays the last few weeks, students had to brainstorm and come up with a topic

  • of their own. They began the writing process of an outline, rough draft, revising and editing, and finally a final copy typed up for their argumentative essays. Social Studies--This week the focus was on Asia as we looked at Ancient China and India. Students paired up to classify groups in the Caste System, read articles on The Silk Road and The Great Wall as well as taking a virtual tour of The Great Wall. Lastly, students have been working on IXL skills this week that pertain to The Silk Road and Hinduism of India. They will end the week with a review on a new website, Blooket.com, of all they have learned the last couple of weeks.

    Pre-K/Head Start

This week in Pre-K and Head Start we learned through the wonderful world of

Nursery Rhymes! On Itsy Bitsy Spider day we learned about spiders and story

sequencing, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star helped us out with alphabet recognition,

and so much more! We also had a special visitor come and visit us for Dental

Health Month, Mackenzie Jordan. She taught us the importance of brushing our

teeth, and going to the dentist twice a year.

  • Kindergarten

Kindergarten students celebrated Groundhog Day! We predicted if the groundhog

would see his shadow. He did and we will have 6 more weeks of winter! Students

explored and made shadows. In ELAR, students made inferences and identified

the problem and solution in a story. We are identifying coins in math...pennies,

    nickels, dimes and quarters!

  • 1st

    Grade

This week during social studies, 1st grade students learned how people traded

goods with one another to get the things they needed and wanted. They learned

how the invention of money changed how people exchanged goods and services.

Students worked in small groups and brainstormed different things that they

  • could trade today with others. They also discussed what needs and wants their

    families may have.

    2nd

    Grade

This week in second grade students enjoyed reading a book titled, Going Places.

  • When reading, students were able to identify the character’s internal and external

traits throughout the story. Students worked in groups to describe their

classmates internal and external character traits. In math, we started our time

unit and students were super excited to be working with their very own clocks to

learn how to tell time. In social studies students learned about our American

celebrations, community celebrations, and state celebrations. Students read how

these celebrations originated throughout history. In Science, students completed

their Natural Resource review and did very well on their science test.

    3rd Grade

As third grade prepares for Valentine’s Day next week, we have been reading

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch. In the book, Mr. Hatch accidentally receives a

Valentine’s gift that the postman mistakenly delivered to him. As Mr. Hatch

thought he had a “secret admirer” his attitude completely changed. He became

helpful, happy, and pleasant as he thought someone loved him. After a couple of

days, the postman realized his mistake and told Mr. Hatch what happened. This

devastated Mr. Hatch, and he went back to the grumpy, unpleasant man he was

before. To help students understand the importance of being kind and showing

love, we used sentence starters to write letters to make someone feel special.

Students wrote to anyone from their bus drivers, the custodial staff, to family

members. We also worked on “heart maps'' where students wrote sentences

about their favorite things. These works of art are displayed in the third grade

    hallway.

  • 4th Grade

We have enjoyed reading A Paradise Called Texas and following Mina and her

family as they searched for a new life. The journey was filled with hardship,

tragedy, and adventure. Students have worked very hard analyzing the text and

looking at different scenarios that the characters faced. Some students are even

looking forward to reading the next book in the series to continue Minas

  • journey. In social studies, we have read about the colonization of Texas by

establishing Spanish missions and the positive and negative effects it had on

    Texas.

    5th Grade

Fifth grade students began the week investigating fractions. Students compared

the fraction strips to find fractions with equal denominators so they could add or

subtract. We also practiced simplifying fractions to the simplest form using the

greatest common factor and finding equivalent fractions using the least common

denominator. We ended the week adding and subtracting fractions using the four

square model. This model helps students to take all the steps needed to perform

the addition and subtraction of fractions with common denominators and

    simplifying.
