1. INTRODUCTION

Jangir-Champa district was carved out from Bilaspur district as a separate district and

established in 25 may, 1998 with its headquarter at Janjgir. The district is situated at the

centre part of the Chhattisgarh state and so it is considered as Heart of Chhattisgarh. It is the

city of Maharaja JajawalyDev of Kalchury Dynasty. The Champa city stands on the banks of

river Hasdev. It is famous for its Vishnu Mandir which reflects the golden past of the district.

Vishnu Mandir is an ancient artistic sample of Vaishnav community. The district is a major

producer of food grains in the state.

It is situated between north latitude 210 39’54’’ to 22

15’55’’ to 830 22’17’’. It falls in Survof India Degree sheet No. 64K, 64O & 64J. It is

bounded by Korba district in the north, Baloda Bazar in the south, Raigarh in the east and

Bilaspur district in the west. It is situated on the National Highway No. 49 and is 175km

away from the state capital Raipur through road route and 152km through rail route. The area

of the district is about 4466.74 km2. The total population of the district is approximately

16,20,632 and has a population density of 421 inhabitants per square kilometer (as per census

2011).

The district consists of 10 tahsils namely Janjgir, Akaltara, Baloda, Nawagarh,

Champa, Pamgarh, Sakti, Jaijaipur, Malkharoda and Dabhara. There is 9 blocks and total

number of villages in the district is 915. It is a major hub for agricutural trade and a major

local market for fresh farm supplies. Janjgir-Champa is the most important fastest growing

district in the state aswell as in India as 52 power plants are being opened here.The district is

going to become the “Power Hub” of our country which will supply 15 to 20 thousand

megawatt electricity. Wardha Power Plant (6 X 600 MW) which is second biggest upcoming

priv thermal power plant of Asia is one of the major thermal power plant of the district.

Major tourist places and religious pilgrims of the district are Vishnu Mandir, Madanpurgarh,

Rishabhtirth, Shivarinarayan, Kaleshwarnath (Pithampur), Chandrahasani (Chandrapur),

Ashtabhuji (Adbhar), Laxmaneshwar (Kharod) etc.

Janjgir also carries an old world which is the essence of its existance. It has been the

residance of Annie Funk, a Christian Missionary who lost her life in Titanic. Her house still

lies deserted in the city and people often visit the ruins of her house. Further, the Nahariya

Baba temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman has always been a place of interest for the tuorists.

Manka DevMandir of Khokhra is also a peaceful and nice place of the district located

between two big ponds.

District Survey Report has been prepared as per the guidelines of the Gazette of India

notification no. S.O. 141(E) New Delhi, Dated 15th

January 2016 of Ministry of

Environment, Forest and Climate Change mentioned in Appendix-X.

District Environment Impact Assessment Authority (DEIAA) and District

Environment Assessment Committee (DEAC) are constituted to scrutinize and sanction the

environmental clearance for mining of minor minerals of lease area less than 5 hectare.

2.Overview of Mining Activity in the District:

Minerals of economic importance are found in Janjgir-Champa district mainly

Limestone, Dolomite etc. Building materials like aggregate, sand, murrom, ordinary stone,

brick clay are also found in enough quantity.

Three mines of Limestone has been allotted to Lafarge Cement Pvt Ltd. Beside these

09 quarries of Dolomite are operational in Jaijaipur, Akaltara and Sakti tahsil at villages

Chhitapadariya, Jhhalraunda, Khamhariya, Darri, Dumarpara etc.

175 Limestone quarries at Akaltara,Tarod, Kirari of Akaltara tahsil, Nawagarh,

Salkhan of Nawagarh, Khairhiti and Raipura of Jaijaipur, Lachhanpur, Devarha,

Kikirda,Darrabhata, Birgahani, Karmandi of Janjgir, Kurda of Champa, Kekrabhata of

Dabhara, Nawagaon, Jagdalli, Judaga, Ranigaon of Sakti, Jevra, Chorbhatthi, Chandipara,

Sukulpara, Bhuigaon, Jhulan, Khapri of Pamgarh, Nagjhar, Pirhid, Ghoghari of Malkharoda,

Auraikala, Mauhadih, Karmanda, Baijalpur of Baloda tahsil area have been leased out.

13 quarries have been sanctioned for mining of soil to prepare brick at villages Tanod,

Devri, Bhuigaon, Hadaha of Pamgarh, Nagaridih of Nawagarh, Pisaud, Devarha, Kudari,

Bhada of Janjgir, Girgira, Putidih of Dabhara, Choriya of Champa and Devari of Baloda

tahsil etc.

20 sand quarries have been leased out on the bank of river Hasdev, Mahanadi, Borai,

Mand and Son at different villages for sand mining and 22 sand quarries are send for

environment clearance.

The mining activity in the district is mainly concentrated in Akaltara, Janjgir,

Champa, Jaijaipur, Malkharoda, Dabhara, Pamgarh and Sakti block.

Approximately 1555.7896 lakh rupees royalty is earned from major minerals and

4212.509 lakh from minor minerals in the district in 2015-16.

6.Process of Deposition of Sediments in the rivers of the District:

There are some important factors which are responsible for the process of

sedimentation in a river basin. These are the stage of river development (the infant, youth,

mature or old stage), lithology and structures of the upstream region or provenance from where

sediments eroded/migrated/travelled, geomorphology and gradient of provenance,

anthropogenic activities such as mining, industrialization and mega engineering projects such

as Dam also affects the process of sedimentation and the thickness of the sequence is

determined by the depth of the stream channel during flood stage and is related to the size of

river itself. The major river of the district is Hasdev, Mahanadi, Borai, Mand and Son. The

Hasdev-Bango project has been considered as life supporting canal for the district. Under this

project 3/4th

area of the district will be covered for irrigation. Hasdev River originates in Hills

of Sonhat Tahsil of Koriya district and is the largest river in the district and is about 176 km

long. Hasdev river divides the district into two parts as it flows through the centre part. It is the

life line for the district. Farmers take double crop, irrigated through Hasdev-Bango canal. It

carries load of sand as it flows through the Gondwana terrain and enters to Chhattisgarh

maidan where it deposit its load. It is shallow in depth but sometimes it creates havoc during

rain. Other major rivers of the district are Borai, Mand and Mahanadi. Mahanadi, the major

river of the Chhattisgarh bordering the south of the district separates the Janjgir-Champa from

Baloda bazar district. Hasdev, Borai, Son, Mand rivers are the tributaries of Mahanadi.

9.Physiography of the district:

Geomorphologically, the areato the north of Mahanadi River exhibits landforms of

low-level structural plateaux, structural plains, pediment/ pediplain, denudational hillsand

valleys. Flood plains are restricted along the course of Mahanadi River and its tributaries like

Hasdev, Kanji, Son, Borai, Bangan and Kutri. The maximum elevation observed in the area is

376m above sea level, as seen in the north-eastern part of the district and the minimum

elevation is less than 240m abovesea level along the Mahanadi River in te southern most part

of the district. Mahanadi River flows from west to east in the southern most margin of the

district and all the tributaries debouch from north to south.

11. Geology and Mineral wealth:

Geologically, Janjgir-Champa district represents rock formations ranging in age from

Archean to Neo Proterozoic period. The Chhota Nagpur Gneissic complex of Archean to

palaeo Proterozoic age occupies the northern most part of the district. It comprises of

unclassified granite gneiss and granitoids with enclaves of meta sedimentary and meta

igneous suites like biotite chlorite schist, Quartzite, ampibolites, dolomite marble etc. Meta

basic dykes and quartz and pegmatite veins intrude these rocks.

The Chhattisgarh Super group of the rocks of Meso to Neo Proterozoic age (2000-

900my) represented by Chandarpur and Raipur groups occupy almost 90% of the total area of

the district. The Chandarpur Group comprises sandstone and conglomerate. The sandstone is

coarse to medium grained, pinkish white to brownish in colour, mainly arenitic with arkosic

gritty wacke and conglomerate at the base.The Raipur group is unclassified in the north

central part but in the rest of the area, it has been classified into three formations-

Gunderdehi, Formation, Chandi Formation and Tarenga Formation. Gunderdehi Formation

occupies the eastern part of the district. It is represented by thinly to thickly laminated, fine

grained, grey to dark grey shale with occasional intercalations of stromatolitic limestone.

Chandi Formation occupies the western and east central part of the district. It comprises

brownish to dark grey, fine to medium grained stromatolitic limestone and dolomite. Tarenga

Formation occupies the central part of the district. Massive, hard and compact grey to dirty

brown shale and greenish grey, hard and compact chert and clay represent this formation.

Unclassified Raipur group is represented by shale, limestone and dolomite.

The Chhattisgarh Super group of the rocks show bedding trending in NW-SE to N-S

direction with low to moderate north easterly to westerly dips. The granite gneiss and older

metamorphic show foliation trending in NNW-SSE to WNW-ESE direction with vertical to

steep dips due east. A number of small faults trending in N-S, NNE-SSW and NNW-SSE

direction are observed mostly in the south-eastern part of the district.

Mineral wealth of Bilaspur district:

The Janjgir-Champa district has number of significant mineral deposits. Most of the

areas of district are furnished with Limestone and Dolomite. Cement and blast furnace grade

limestone is reported from Akaltara and Arasmeta. Blast furnace and SMS(Steel Melting

Shop) grade dolomite were reported from Deragarh, Belhadih and Akalsara.These occur as

small bands.
