District Governor‘s D9670
Message from the DG Don writes
October is the month where we focus on Vocational Service, one of our Four Avenues
of Service. Through Vocational Service Rotary fosters and supports the application of
the ideal of service in the pursuit of vocations. The dimensions of vocational service
are limited only by the imagination and ingenuity of clubs and Rotarians. Because Ro-
tarians are classified in their clubs on the basis of their vocations, vocational service is
an essential in the execution of all Rotary programs. We have great examples in this
district of vocational skills being used to build communities in New Guinea, East
Timor, Solomon islands and of course in our own district.
I would like to mention here the great work of Dr Bill Walker of The Newcastle Sun-
rise Club who has just returned from expeditions to China and Vietnam. Bill, despite
being past eighty has performed and supervised cleft lip operations on hundreds of
young people in those countries. Bill has had the support of many other Rotarians of
this and other districts.
Big thank you to PDG Tony Mackenzie and Peter English (Dubbo Macquarie) who
have organized and just completed visits to eight smaller western towns with the
MERV van. As a result almost 300 males had the opportunity to check out their gen-
eral health and wellbeing. Funding from Lorraine Bevan‘s Partners program in 2009-
10 made the trip possible.
Group Study Exchange (GSE) team members and leader are being selected this month.
This is a Vocational Service Program supported by the Rotary Foundation. We will
bring you the names of the successful candidates after 24th October.
Other dates for the diary this month are: Sunday 17th, Sleepout For The Homeless.
Has your club made a donation ($200). District target $6,000.
Friday 29th Presidents and AGs meeting, Maitland
Saturday 30th Committee Chairs Meeting, Maitland
Sunday 31st Presidents and AGs at Narromine
November is Foundation Month. This year the Foundation Committee made money
boxes available to clubs for the collection small change from businesses and individu-
als. If your club is participating feel free to send off the collected money to PDG Alex
McHarg at any time. Tax receipts are available on request for individuals.
District 9670 has many active and resourceful committees doing some wonderful work
supporting clubs in their Rotary Service. We are always looking for new members for
these committees. If you would like to take on a new challenge beyond the club level
this is the chance for you. All committees are listed in the District Directory. Contact
the committee leader or myself if you are interested in making that extra contribution
in building BIGGER,BETTER,BOLDER clubs in our
district.

NEWS UPDATE ....ROMAC …..the dream to reality
The Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children's Mission Statement" to provide medical treat-
ment for children from developing countries and/or dignity restoring surgery not accessible to
them in their home country "was full filled here at the John Hunter Hospital Newcastle in Sep-
tember.
A team of surgeons and medical staff from the John Hunter Hospital provided surgical treat-
ment for Inosensia Abuk (17) and Martin Martin (15) free of charge to remove life threatening
tumours in both their jaws. ROMAC‘s Director Bob Richards organised airfares, visas and lo-
gistics while the John Hunter Hospital waived all costs.
The 10 hour procedures were very successful. Bone was grafted from their fibulas
(leg) to replace bone and tumour excised from their mandibles and fixed into posi-
tion with plates supplied Synthes at no cost.
The girls have been recuperating at Ronald McDonald House after a 2 week stay in
hospital. Both girls have had a sister accompany them for support and a Timorese
Dentist who has been very helpful with translating and follow up treatment which is
needed after discharge in West Timor.
Inosensia and Martin are very grateful for the generosity shown towards them from
Novocastrians. They will be returning home this week after their life changing pro-
cedures and will be able to resume their education. Both have said that they hope to
take a career in nursing so that they will be able to serve their communities.
All the girls come from a very poor and remote region in West Timor and have en-
joyed the surroundings and hospitality in Newcastle and Port Stephens.
A Big Thanks to ROMAC Rotary District 9670 and all volunteers who have made a
difference to 2 beautiful girls from West Timor.

we give, but how much love we put in the giving‖ Mother Teresa

MUNA Canberra
(Model United Nations Assembly)
On the 13th to 15th of August, Dean Pike and Sanuji Koswanage travelled to Canberra to participate in National Model United Nations
Assembly, representing the Republic of India.
After a long train and bus ride, we finally arrived and began work forging allinaces with teams from all overAfter a long train and bus
ride, we finally arrived and began work forging allinaces with teams from all overAfter a long train and bus ride, we finally arrived and
began work forging alliances with other teams from all across Australia. Later that night we listened to a guest speaker, Ramon ―Chico‖
Negron, talk about his experiences as a foreign diplomat. His speech was inspiring and gave us new perspectives on different issues
around the world. Afterwards, we worked on our speeches late into the night and gained a few hours sleep before waking up to the first
day of debate.
We arrived at Old Parliament House early in the morning and were immediately overwhelmed to think that so many decisions had been
made right where we were sitting, about to argue for the benefit of our nation, India. We began soon after and debated for over five
hours on the issues of nuclear non-proliferation, the situation in Afghanistan, international financial development and desertification. A
variety of unique speeches were made throughout the day and it was interesting to see the opinions of other nations around the world on
the different resolutions, as well as our own country. We found ourselves disagreeing with our own beliefs on nuclear disarmament and
desertification, in order to represent the people of India and what would benefit them the most. At the end of an exhausting day of argu-
ing we were pleased that MUNA 2010 had become the first year to have a tie in support and opposition of a resolution, which indicated
the strength of debate from both sides.
That night, we attended the MUNA dinner hosted by the Australian National University. The food was amazing and we had the opportu-
nity to listen to a second guest speaker, Professor Kent Anderson, who spoke of his experiences in Asia, and the importance of multicul-
turalism and the acceptance of foreign values. At the conclusion of this, we travelled back to our hotel and fell into our beds, weary, but
excited for our final day of debate.
We arrived at Old Parliament House early in the morning for a politically orientated day of debate. India spoke for Palestinian sover-
eignty and against the sovereignty of Kosovo, two very interesting and different stances. After another three hours, the Model United
Nations Assembly was concluded, and the winners were announced as our allies and friends North Korea, with Afghanistan coming in
second place. Although we did not win, we were pleased with our efforts, and believe that the strength of arguments put forward by the
North Korean Delegates truly made them deserving of first place.
Overall, it was a very challenging and valuable experience. Not only were we able to enhance our speaking skills but also meet other
Australians with similar interests to ours, who will remain as close friends for a long time. We would like to thank our teacher and coun-
sellor Mr Berry, for assisting us with our resolutions, and giving up his weekend to come with us to Canberra. Another huge thanks to
Adamstown-New Lambton and Rotary District 9670 for their sponsorship and the amazing organisation by Canberra Rotary for coordi-
nating such an unforgettable event.
Many thanks
Pam Wellham

From: Norm and Helen Michener [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 01 October, 2010 10:01 AM Cc: Pam Fayle Subject: Take Care to Get There District Governor Rotary International Greetings We emailed this information to your predecessor back in June. We feel it might be worthwhile to send it out to the current District Governors. Our daughter, Camille, died in a road accident in July last year. Camille worked as a doctor in Perth, training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Somehow she found time to work as a volunteer: in the Red Cross Family Support Program, as a Lifeline counsellor, as a medic in Vanuatu for 6 weeks, and in Aceh after the Boxing Day tsunami. In addition, Camille spoke on women‘s health issues to groups of indigenous women, chaired the AMA Doctors in Training Committee (WA), and was in-volved in a national campaign against unsafe working hours for young doctors. Many Australians have lost someone close in a road accident. Perhaps someone in your Rotary Club is in that position. In support of those people, and in an effort to reduce the road toll, Take Care to Get There (www.camillesticker.net) has been adopted as a road safety awareness project of the Rotary Club of Woolgoolga, NSW. I have been a member of the club for five years (and President Elect for 2011-2012). The Woolgoolga Rotary Club has paid for the printing of 10 000 stickers. These include the RI Wheel and ‗ROTARY CLUB OF WOOL-GOOLGA‘. The club has decided to charge $1 per sticker (plus 55 cents postage for each 10 stickers ordered) in order to cover costs. Payment details are in the letter attached. If the money received eventually exceeds costs the surplus will be used in Woolgoolga Rotary RYDA projects. None of the money will go to Helen or myself. We would like to make each DG and every Rotary Club in Australia aware of our club‘s project. Would you be prepared to make each of your Clubs aware of this project via your Newsletter? I am confident that a number of the clubs would be prepared to make the stickers available to people in their local community, particularly local senior High School students (via RYDA or other road safety awareness programs). Please find time in your busy schedule to read the letter attached and visit www.camillesticker.net in order to find out more about Camille and the work she was doing. Our hearts go out to all of those grieving a lost one. Thanks for your support. Sincerely Norm Michener (Helen) 0418 484 512

.From the Editor’s Keyboard Welcome to the 4th (October) edition of the District Governor's Newsletter for 2010—2011. This month has an even larger amount of content from the last. DG Don Stephens has been extremely busy travelling to the various clubs. He has included into this edition a number of articles, one of which I wish to draw your attention to concerning the wonderful efforts and work done by PDG Bruce Allen. The article on page 6 reflects the work being done to Building Communities and Bridging Continents. Bruce by the way is one of the guest speakers at the Annual Conference early next year. To hear about this amazing and truly inspirational story it is urged that you hear this first hand at the Annual Conference, in Dubbo on the 18th to the 20th of March 2011. In closing, please accept my humble apologies for the tardiness of the newsletter. Please enjoy the articles and I hope you get to attend some of the great functions that have been advertised. Peter Judd Editor RC of Dubbo West [email protected] Mob 0437 847 263 If you have any articles or reports for publishing, they make a more interesting read if there are photos or sketches included.
