TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2015 KHALEEJ TIMES [1092975] T o increase energy effi- ciency and save the envi- ronment, the concept of district cooling is being widely appreciated. In- volving the distribution of cool air generated in a centralised location for residential and commercial cooling requirements, the system can deliver more efficient heating and cooling for users, providing there is density of development. A district cooling system can reach five times higher efficiencies than traditional electricity-driven chill- ers. Ever since district cooling be- came widespread, it has resulted in less environmental emissions, air pollution, the greenhouse gas (GHG) carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and ozone-destroying refrigerants. In a typical residential unit, district-cooling systems can cut energy usage by 40 to 50 per cent, compared to traditional climate control systems. Besides cutting the annual CO 2 emissions by about one tonne for every tonne of district cooling refrigeration demand served, the system is likely to replace the traditional systems with new environmen- tally friendly technologies. While reducing the total power consumption compared to tradi- tional systems, district cooling also supports the rising power demand in Dubai. Recently the 6th IDEA International District Cooling Conference organised by the In- ternational District Energy Asso- ciation (IDEA) and hosted by Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) was held BY SADIQ SHABAN KHALEEJ TIMES | ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT PAL Technology District Cooling Department was established in year 2006. Emirates Central Cooling Sys- tems Corporation (Empower), the leading district cooling service provider in the region (a joint ven- ture between Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone (TECOM) Investments has recently connected its services to the prestigious development of Emirates Towers which consist of the Emirates Office Tower and Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel that are connected with a two- storey retail complex (The Boule- vard).
