Visitors always welcome

With the current Rotary Year drawing to a close we start to reflect on our

years achievements, some inevitable disappointments, but at the end of the

day we are all volunteers with members contributing on a level that suits their

level of capability and or enthusiasm.

We acknowledge with great respect those members that contribute with

‘above and beyond’ energy that leaves a lot us for dead.

Unfortunately we are about to loose one of those people that undeniably falls

into that category, I am referring to Rtn PHF Michael Metcalf, Michael was

originally sponsored by PP Max Bird and joined our club in September 2013.

Michael established Long Term Self Storage located in Medina into a very

successful business. From the outset Michael was always going to be a ‘do-er’

he quickly established himself into the person the club asked if anything was to

fixed, made or organised. Michael has excelled at anything he has taken on.

He has recently completed the sale of his business and intends to move on with

partner Lee to to a small acre property in our South West.

While we are all very sorry to see Michael and Lee move away we send with

them our fondest regards and very best wishes in pursuit of their retirement

dreams. Michael wishes to continue his community work wherever he and Lee

settle, some Rotary Club or Community Organisation is about to inherit a gem.

Polio This Week: 5th June 2019

This week the world’s largest conference on gender equality and the

health, rights, and wellbeing of girls and women is happening in

Vancouver, Canada. Women are truly delivering a polio-free world.

The GPEI proudly recognizes women’s valuable contributions in the

fight against polio

In Papua New Guinea, a GPEI Outbreak Response Assessment

reviewed the impact of current outbreak response and concluded that

overall strong response had been implemented.

Commending national and subnational public health authorities and

health workers on their efforts, the Assessment team underscored the

need on now filling any residual subnational surveillance and

immunity gaps.

On 4 June, The Lancet published the results of the first in-human,

Phase 1 clinical trial for nOPV2 – a key first step toward

determining the potential for a novel type-2 oral polio vaccine that

would provide the same level of protection against type-2 poliovirus

as OPV without the same risk of reverting into cVDPV2 in under-

immunized populations.

These initial results are promising, and suggest the vaccine is safe

and immunogenic in adults; further clinical trial results will be

important to evaluate nOPV as a potential tool to sustain a world

free from all types of polioviruses.

The GPEI Semi-Annual Status Report covering the reporting period

July-December 2018 is available online, reporting against the major

objectives of the Polio Endgame Plan 2013-2018. The GPEI will

continue to publish its Semi-Annual Status Reports, to track

progress against the newly-launched Polio Endgame Strategy 2019-

2023.

Summary of new viruses this week:

Afghanistan – one new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case;

Pakistan – two new WPV1 cases and 16 WPV1-positive

environmental samples;

Niger – one cVDPV2 case; and, Nigeria – one cVDPV2-positive

environmental sample.

Happy Birthday Balay Mindanaw

Our long term partner the Balay Mindanaw Peace Foundation celebrates

its 23rd Birthday in May.

Operating from its base in Cagayan de Oro, on the Philippine island of

Mindanao, they have installed, and continue to monitor, 58 of Disaster Aid’

provided Skyhydrants across the Philippines.

At their meeting of 5th May the Board of Disaster Aid Australia have

agreed to supply a further 10 Skyhydrants to Balay Mindanaw this year,

together with a grant for the purchase of tanks, pipes and fittings for the

installations.

Rotary Club Of Somerset

Disaster Aid Australia are always happy to help other organisations

such as the Rotary Club of Somerset,Tasmania provide water to their

projects.

Rotary Club of Somerset support a school in Kampot, Cambodia and

installing a SkyHydrant to supply Safe Drinking Water was a high

priority.

We were able to supply them with a SkyHydrant and advice that

enabled them to complete the installation.

The SkyHydrant will mean the School can now provide 10,000 litres of

water a day to the pupils.

Acknowledgement of SkyHydrant Inventor

Rhett Butler has been recognised by Sydney University with an

Alumni Award for Service to Humanity.

To date over 6,000 SkyHydrants have been installed to provide safe

drinking water for communities and schools.

With the low cost, light weight, simple operation, and effective removal of

contamination; the units have become an important part of Disaster

Aid Australia’s ‘Smart Aid‘ and ‘Safe Water for Every Child‘ initiatives.

Each SkyHydrant is capable of providing safe water for more than 500

people which means that millions of people around the world are being

protected by Rhett’s invention.

Three Rotary Club members, all a little hard of hearing, were standing by the bowling green in the park.

One remarked to the other

"Windy isn't it?"

"No" the second man replied, "its Thursday". The third man nodded in agreement:

"So am I. Let’s have a cup of tea"

A doctor, lawyer, and a Rotarian in charge of fundraising all die and arrive at the Pearly Gates about the

same time. St. Peter tells them they may each have one thing to take with them to Heaven.

The doctor is first, and asks for $1 million. This is given and proceeds to enter Heaven. The lawyer, not

to be outdone, asks for $2 million. "Very well," say St. Peter and opens the gate to Heaven for the

lawyer.

Finally it is time for the Rotarian, who had just finished a fundraising project for The Rotary Foundation.

St. Peter asks him what he would like to take to Heaven. The fundraiser moves up very close to St. Peter,

and in a soft voice asks, "It it's not too much trouble, could I just have the names of those two people who

were ahead of me in line?"

After a morning fishing, a Rotarian left for a District meeting in the afternoon and his wife decided to

motor out into the lake, drop anchor and read her book.

A Game Warden pulls up alongside the woman in his boat. "'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you

doing?"

"Reading a book" she replies.

"You're in a Restricted Fishing Area" he informs her.

"I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing, I'm reading".

"Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you

in and write you up."

"If you do that, I'll have to charge you with Sexual assault" says the woman.

"But I haven't even touched you," says the game warden.

"That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment."

"Have a nice day ma'am" the warden said, and he left.
