AWARDS SUBMISSION FORM

2013-2014

International Service –

TMF GG #1412364 - Grahamstown South Africa education facilities upgrade. This project, approved by the

Rotary Foundation on 9 Dec 2013, was originated by the lead international partner, the Rotary Club of Kona

Mauka, and the Host Partner, the Rotary Club of Grahamstown. The RC of Kona provided a $1000 cash

contribution, with matching funds, toward the ~$75K project designed to help replace computer and other

equipment previously provided to the Victoria Girls School in Grahamstown. The earlier donated computers

and facilities were destroyed in a fire. The project funding, including contributions from 25 D5000 clubs,

arrived in Grahamstown in late February and the procurement bids for the project were expected on 28 March.

Polio Plus Giving: Held special Denny’s Project Compassion fundraiser to raise funds for Polio Plus. We

welcomed participation from other West Hawaii clubs for the event, which raised over $2,900 that was

forwarded to TRF as a Polio Plus contribution.

Special Polio Meeting: Held a special club meeting to educate members about Polio and past-president Alan

Clark’s experiences at a 2013 Indian NID.

Through our club foundation, we solicited funds from Rotarians and visitors to support victims of the

Philippine typhoon and preceding earthquake. We raised $3000, which was donated to ShelterBoxUSA on 29

November, less than 3 weeks after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the eastern Philippines.

The -sponsored Interact Club at Kealakehe High School continued its 17 year tradition of raising

money for and writing letters to orphans at two orphanages near Chennai (Madras) in southeastern India. This

year, the students raised $5000 for this ongoing humanitarian project. The Interact Club also independently

raised funds for Polio Plus ($500) and “Smile Train” (Like Rotoplast - $500).

We are coordinating the hosting and activities for the West Hawaii visit of the Australian Rotary Friendship

Exchange group from 26-29 April this year.

District 5000, Hawaii AWARDS SUBMISSION FORM 2013-2014 • Designed and obtained approval of Global Grant 1412364, which is, to our understanding, the first Global

Grant in District 5000 under the “new system. We recruited financial support from many other clubs. The project involved providing and installing computers in a girls’ school in a poor area in Victoria, South Africa. This project involved the Rotary Club of Grahamston, South Africa, and is the third project we have done with them.

• The mechanical cows in Ecuador meet a need for nutrition for school children in Ecuador and a source of income for the schools.

• The Shelterbox was sent to provide help to the victims of the hurricane in the Philippines. • The educational visit of four fisheries students from Japan to our area was co-ordinated by our sister club

in Mizusawa, Japan and co-incidented with the third anniversary of the tsunami in Japan. Some of the students had witnessed some buildings of their fisheries school get swept away. One of the accompanying Rotarians lost members of his family. We had four days of events, including social ones and ones releated to fisheries.
