Synopsis

Viola has been shipwrecked in a violent storm off the coast of Illyria; in the process she has lost her twin brother, Sebastian. She disguises herself as a boy and assumes the name Cesario for protection. Thus disguised, Viola becomes a page in the service of Orsino, the Duke. It seems that Orsino is having little luck courting Olivia, who is in mourning for the deaths of her father and brother. As Orsino's proxy, Viola is sent to Olivia with love letters. Viola refuses to budge until she is let in to see Olivia; Olivia, intrigued by the impudent young "boy," contrives to get "Cesario" to return by sending her steward, Malvolio, after her with one of Olivia's rings. Viola realizes to her dismay that Olivia has fallen for Cesario rather than Duke Orsino—further complicated by the fact that Viola has had stirrings herself for Orsino.

From the Director

Thank you for attending this year’s All School production Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays for good reason. When we laugh at these characters, we laugh at ourselves and the very things that make us human – our ability for self-deception, our knack for getting back up when we’ve been knocked down, and our relentless pursuit of love, requited or otherwise.

Directing Shakespeare’s work is always a profoundly satisfying one as I get to watch 30+ teenagers fall in love with Shakespeare and become fascinated at the way he uses language and intrigued by the way he understood what it was like to experience love and heartbreak across the centuries. I was the same age when I first fell under his spell and it has been a lifelong love affair for me. Now I get to watch a new generation make him their own. Author, Emma Yates-Bradley recently wrote, “While there’s not yet an app for everything we experience, there is a Shakespeare play”. I love that this dead Elizabethan poet speaks to these kids in such a primal manner.

While directing a play about love, I , of course , must reflect on my own love. I am fortunate to be married to a man who never fails to let me know how much he loves me and our son. Brad Vincent, my love for you is “as hungry as the sea, And can digest as much”. I love you, my heart. All of my art is for you.
