On Saturday, May 21st, LPSPS will kick off Safe Boa ng Week at
9:00 AM with Vessel Safety Checks ( VSC's) at Marina Del Ray
and Nunmakers. The Vessel Safety Examiners( VSE's ) are
scheduled to be in these loca ons. At approximately
2:00pm another LPSPS "team" will assemble at the
Marina Del Rey pool for the second part of the kick off,
The Ready, Set, Wear it (RSWI) life jacket (PFD)
demonstra on. This will be open to the public, and will
be adver sed in local media and area bulle n boards. It
will cover Laws requiring the use of PFD's, descrip on of
the various types of PFD's and a demonstra on of the
proper use of them. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's
office will be sending a knowledgeable deputy to
par cipate in this important, and informa ve event.
Please spread the word of these events, and also
comeout and support your Squadron. We need everyone
to pa cipate in order to ensure we accomplish our goal of
promo ng safety knowledge. And please bring your PFD
with you so we can set an example for all during this
important annual Safe Boa ng Week event.
Safe and fun boa ng to all!
Na onal Boa ng Safety week is from May 21-27, 2016. The purpose of the campaign is to spread the message of safe and responsible boa ng. " Wear It!" is the theme of this year’s campaign and the goal is to educate the boa ng community on the importance of wearing life jackets while on the water. We all are only too familiar with all the reasons for not
wearing life jackets, “I know how to swim”, “nothing is
going to happen to me”, “it’s too hot” are regularly
used excuses, but the fact remains that approximately
700 people drown each year from recrea onal boa ng
accidents. The vast majority of these deaths could have
been prevented if only the vic ms were wearing a life
jacket. We must encourage people who boat
frequently to wear the proper life jacket and take a safe
boa ng course.
Accidents can happen at an alarming speed anyplace or
any me you are on the water. Although many boaters
stow life jackets on their boat, very few choose to wear
them. There just isn’t me to grab a life jacket and put
it on properly before you are in the water. If you are
faced with a strong current or unfavorable weather
condi ons, you will not only have trouble making sure
you are safe and secure in your life jacket, but you may
find that you will be unable to help your friends, rela-
ves, children or passengers that have accompanied
you in your boat. Wearing your life jacket will allow you
to be safe in case of an accident and will also allow you
the ability to assist others that may be in danger.

Two of our members, Bob Johnson and Guy Robinson, just completed the ALL-Day American Boa ng Course (ABC) presented Saturday April 30th at the Mari me Museum. They were joined by two other students. All 4 passed both the USPS and Louisiana State test with fly-ing colors and will receive cer fica ons from both groups. Several of our talented and State cer fied in-structors helped out with the material presenta on and grading task. Many thanks to Cdr. Joey, John Gniady, Bill Dietrich, Lynn Haase and Glenn Roy for all the prepara-on needed to make this a great/fun learning experi-
ence. Many, many hats-off to Peg for doing most of the "heavy-li ing" associated with registra on, food services and examina on filing. Mr Dwight came through again. He electronically submi ed the registra on and final test grades for the students, this me, for both the USPS and the LAWLF examina ons. This is our first ABC class this year.
Final tes ng for the Coastal Naviga on Course (Pilo ng) is underway. The course began back in February with over 20 enthusias c students wan ng to learn more about plo ng and naviga on techniques on our coastal waterways. What a High-Intensity, exci ng and challenging learning experi-ence. Could not have happen without the leadership and talent of Lynn Haase, who spear-headed and taught most of the program. Lynn received assistance and support from Bill Dietrich, Chris Co rell (teaching one of the chapters), Jeff Williams, Glenn and Peg. It's great to know these students will now have the knowledge, skills and confidence to safely and accurately cruise our coastal waters. What a feeling of accomplishment! Arguably, one of the best courses USPS has to offer!
