Plenary Asylum seekers and other immigrants One of the dangers of the way asylum seekers are
portrayed in the media is that they can be dehumanised, and that the circumstances of the real people at the centre of the situation can be ignored or forgotten. We going to listen a song that presents the situation from the perspective of an asylum seeker.
Distant Shore YouTube - Karan Casey - Distant Shore
Everyone knows that there's no place like home But I'm just seeking refuge in a world full of storms Washed up on a distant shore, can't go home anymore The natives are hostile whatever I say The thing they feel most is that I might want to stay By their side on a distant shore can't go home anymore I escaped my tormentors by crossing the sea What I cannot escape is memory Washed up on a distant shore can't go home anymore
Identify the key elements of the asylum seekers’ situation as represented in the words of the song. Write these alongside the words from the typical media portrayal and compare the two lists. Do you think immigration and asylum seeking are problems in the UK. If so, what would they do about the problem?
