Fit Testing and Disposable RespiratorsIf respiratory protection is required, OSHA requires a written Respiratory Protection Program and fi t testing even for employees who wear disposable respirators (a.k.a. fi ltering facepieces, dust mask) [29 CFR 1910.134(c)(1)]. Respiratory protection is required when: - An employee’s exposure to a chemical exceeds the allowable limit - An OSHA chemical specifi c regulation requires respiratory protection - The employer mandates respiratory protection

If an employee voluntarily wears a disposable respirator, fi t testing is not required. An employee can voluntarily wear a disposable respirator for comfort or for nuisance levels of contaminants if the employer determines that such respirator use will not in itself create a hazard [29 CFR 1910.134 (c)(2)].

Cylinders

Choose duration and cylinder type. Aluminum cylinders have an unlimited life expectancy, are built around DOT specifi cation and are rated fro 30 minutes in duration. Carbon cylinders have a 15 year life expectancy, are built around DOT specifi cations and can be ordered in either 30, 45, or 60 minute durations. Both cylinder types need to be hydrostatic tested every 5 years.
