PRESSURE ULCER PREVENTION PROGRAM


Medline’s Pressure Ulcer Prevention ProgramIt is estimated that 2.5 million patients are treated each year in U.S. acute-care facilities for pressure ulcers.2

Incidence rates vary by clinical settings, ranging from 0.4 percent to 38 percent in acute care and 2.2 percentto 23.9 percent in long-term care.2,3 In FY2007, there were 257,412 reported cases of Medicare patientswith pressure ulcers as a secondary diagnosis.4 The additional average charge for the hospital stay (per case)was $43,180. It is estimated that 60,000 patients die each year as a result of pressure ulcer complications.4

The main challenges to having an effective pressure ulcer prevention program are lack of resources, lack ofstaff education, behavioral challenges and lack of patient and family education. Medline’s comprehensivePressure Ulcer Prevention Program offers solutions to these challenges and promotes the reduction ofpressure ulcers with clinical and educational resources, assessment tools and a product line designedto work along with your existing program.

Education and trainingThe Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program includes self-paced workbooks for nurses and nursing assistants plusan instructor’s manual to assist the course administrator. There are also pamphlets to educate patients and theirfamilies and a rewards program to acknowledge participants who successfully complete the program. You’ll alsoreceive an administrative brochure and cost tracker CD to determine pressure ulcer prevalence and incidenceand compare the cost of implementing a pressure ulcer prevention program versus treating a pressure ulcer.

Disposable Absorbent ProductIdentification SystemNo two individuals experience incontinence in exactly the same way – so why should they all use the sameincontinence management product?

Guidelines from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) require individualized care plansfor each incontinent resident. Concerns about dignity and privacy mean these plans need to be discreet.

Shown below is an example of an easy, discreet system for selecting and distributing appropriate incontinencemanagement products. The system uses a variety of stickers to match products to residents. These stickerscan be placed outside the door to the resident’s room, inside the room or in a closet. A legend indicatingthe product each sticker represents can be kept at the nursing station.

In this system, a sticker with a blue fish on it designates a large-sized brief. All employees – delivery staff,nurses and nursing assistants – should be able to identify the blue fish and know which product it represents.

continence self-control (section H.1)Step 2: Assess resident’s status regarding mobility, contractures, chronic diarrhea,

Step 6: Place sticker next to resident’s nametag or designated locationStep 7: Instruct staff to use proper product and size for each resident
