Hormones› ProlactinHormone produced to help the mother’s body produce milk. The more the infant nurses, the more milk is produced
› Let Down ReflexCauses the muscle cells around the milk glands to contract
and eject the milk into the ducts and out the nipple.Triggered by just hearing an infant cry and is difficult to control.
Colostrum› The first milk produced by the mother’s body.› Thick , watery premilk fluid› Produced by the breast the first few days of breast feeding
before the milk “comes in”› High in protein, vitamins, and minerals and has a large amount of
antibodies, and white blood cells.› Low in fat and lactose.
Breast milk contains the right proportions of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water that the baby needs.
It is easy for the baby to digest. Always ready; no mixing, sterilizing, warming. Parents are not temped to overfeed the baby. Babies are seldom constipated. Fewer digestive upsets and disorders, skin disorders and
respiratory infections Sucking required for breast feeding promotes good
development of facial structures. Mother’s immunities to certain diseases are passed to the
baby through the colostrum Nursing stimulates hormones to be released that help the
uterus contract to normal size.
Illness and stresses of the mother can limit milk supply.
Other caregivers may not assist with feeding the infant as often.
The mother may feel reluctant to feed a hungry infant if others are present.
Mother’s diet affects milk and therefore must be watched closely.
Mother’s milk lacks iron and fluoride. Iron-fortified foods must be added to the baby’s diet after the baby triples their birth weight.
Breast feeding is
possible for working
mothers
› Use of a breast pump
› Storage of the milk
Good way to involve the father in the feeding process Some women have medical problems that prevent them from breast
feeding a baby. Other women make a conscious choice to bottle feed a baby. Advantages
› Similar to breast milk› Have iron› Easier to be away from home› Weight is easier to maintain for the mother› No nursing pads or special bras are needed› No worries about an inadequate milk supply› Formula is not affected by the mother’s diet, illness or medication› Anyone can help feed the baby.
Disadvantages› Formula may be more difficult for some infants to digest› Preparation time to sterilize and prepare the formula and equipment is
required› Formula feeding is more expensive
Never leave an infant with a bottle propped up on a pillow or blanket. Feeding time is a vital time in which one-on-one interaction and bonding take place, and can lead to tooth decay.
Hold the infant gently in your arms while feeding.
Clean the bottle and nipple with HOT, soapy water after each use
Mix formula correctly.
During feeding an infant takes in a certain amount of air. This air turns to bubbles in the stomach, which can cause pain in the infant.
Breast fed infants should be burped twice, once after nursing from each breast.
Bottle fed infants should be burped after every 2 ounces. To burp the infant, gently rub and pat it’s back. Infant can be
placed over your shoulder, lying across your lap with stomach down, or sitting in your lap facing one side with one of your hands supporting its chest and the other rubbing or patting its back.
Spitting Up› The contents of the stomach drizzle out of their mouths.› To lessen the problem…
Feed the infant more slowlyBurp the infant more frequently Feed the infant in a more restful and relaxing setting, or hold the
infant in a more upright position.
Infants have a strong desire and need to suck. Primary means by which they are fed for the
first 6 months of life. Most babies have a need to suck even
beyond the bottle or breast. Pacifiers and thumb or finger sucking is not
harmful as long as they do not replace or delay meals.
Do not put an infant to sleep with a pacifier as they may become dependent upon it.
Pacifiers should be one piece, have a ring that is 1 ½ inches across, have ventilation holes and be dishwasher safe.
