1. Values

• Discussion points:– Different cultures and belief systems do not

detract from common value systems– Lecturers largely determine the campus/college

culture– They set acceptable norms within the first seconds

of the first class– Outside factors have an impact (social/home)– Institutional differences influence value systems

• The college vision and value statement set the tone

• Develop respect for individuals along with accountability for individual’s actions

• RESOLUTIONS:– Lecturer attitudes and values sets the tone and

establishes values– Lecturer has a nurturing role– Values must be clearly Communicated, Consistently,

with clear Consequences

– Communication of values must be consistently re-inforced, buy-in assured

– Not negotiated– Orientation programme plays a vital role– Induction programme for new staff

2. Trust

• Resolutions:– Give responsibility– Delegate responsibly– Reward Competence– Capacitate and state your expectations– No favouritism and be truthful and transparent– Complement a job well-done– Affirm and show respect– Encourage initiative

3. Time on Task

• Resolutions:– Finish what you start– Inculcate good time management habits– Make time management a value– Positive re-inforcement• Ie reward good behaviour rather than spend too much

time and energy on punitive measures example: reward attendance rather than punish absence

4. Job Descriptions

• Resolutions:– Must be clarity on expected roles and functions– Regular review of roles and responsibilities

(Perhaps through performance review?)– Understand your professional role as an educator– Display empathy– Find within yourself intrinsic motivators– Have absolute clarity on your goals
