attending his problem.

According to The Adoption of Some Counselling Techniques in Teaching Practice

Supervision Journal by Obazee G. E. & Obaseki F. N. , “counselling is basically a

process in which a counsellor either assist one individual to explore his personal

issues or problems and to find solutions to them.” Egbochuku (2009) cited

Egbochuku (2002) defined counselling “as a “face to face” situation in which a

counsellor, by virtue of her training and skills, helps the client to face, perceive,

clarify, solve and resolve his adjustment problems/issues the counselling process is

thus a relationship because it involves interaction between the counsellor and the

counselee or an interaction in a group where the counsellor is an expert. It is a

helping relationship the outcome of which is self-growth for the counselee. The self-

growth may be realized in the form of a new awareness of an aspect of one’s

behaviour or a concrete change from an undesirable one.”

In order to assist Hassan in attending his problem, some counselling techniques

need to be applied. There are various counselling techniques such as listening skills,

focusing, acceptance, feedback, engagement, encouragement, reflection of feelings,

paraphrasing, congruence, and trustworthiness. The most suitable counselling

techniques which can assist Hassan in attending his problem are acceptance and

feedback.

Acceptance is perceiving or tolerating an individual with a positive regard by

treating him as a worthwhile person. Corey, (1990) is of the view that “acceptance is

a means of respect for an individual without discrimination.“ Regarding Hassan case,

the counselling techniques of acceptance can be used in attending his problem.

Here, acceptance implies an unconditional regard and care for Hassan given by the

counsellor no matter what his personality attributes are, acceptance is demonstrated

through listening attentively with understanding and communicating warmth. It is very

important to build good rapport between the counsellor and the client. Besides, it is

also important that these responses are expressed genuinely in order for Hassan to

understand that the counselling session is genuine. Apart from that, Kolo (1997)

stated that “we can disapprove of an individual’s behaviour and yet communicate to

him that we have regard, care and respect for his person.” Back to Hassan case, in

counselling, the counsellor’s acceptance of Hassan is important for creating a warm,

nonthreatening welcoming atmosphere. This means, that the counsellor listens,

responds genuinely and shows warmth and likeness. This will make Hassan

perceive the counsellor as someone who genuinely respects and cares for him. By

doing this, Hassan will feels relaxed and freely to express himself.
