Every Land Rover model range ever made has been developed and improved continuouslyduring its life cycle – and the Discovery has been the epitome of this philosophy. Development

has always focussed on upgrading the technical specification to enhance off-road capabilitiesand performance and to broaden the vehicle’s appeal.

The Discovery model range, launched in 1989, was designed to compete in theburgeoning leisure segment of the 4x4 market. Initially only available in 3 door configurationyet it competed well in the family car market with its comfortable ride and an interior designedby Sir Terence Conran. But just a year after launch the 5 door model became available andfuel injection replaced carburettors.

The Discovery utilised a Range Rover chassis and featured coil sprung live axles at thefront and rear. Both diesel and petrol versions were available – a turbocharged four cylinder2.5 litre, 200Tdi diesel engine and the tried and trusted 3.5 litre V8i petrol engine. Thedriveline consisted of the LT77 5-speed manual gearbox and an LT230T transfer gearbox.

1994 saw more noticeable improvements with a redesigned exterior, including newheadlamps, and design enhancements to the interior. The 300TDi engine was introduced andABS was now available. The R380 gearbox was introduced and automatic transmission wasavailable with the diesel engined models.

As the 90s wore on competition got stiffer but Land Rover had “Project Tempest”underway – this culminated in 1998 with theintroduction of “New Discovery” – now knownas Series 2. The new car kept its strongestelements like the distinctive bodyshape but vitalimprovements in handling and build qualitywere addressed.

However, it was the all new TD5 enginethat epitomised the quality of the Series II andthe petrol V8 version was just as revolutionary.Hill Descent Control was fitted as standard andoptions included Active CorneringEnhancement and Self-Levelling Suspension.

The biggest leap in technology yet tookplace in 2004 with the launch of the

Discovery 3 – but that’s another story…

BUMPER WITH INTEGRATEDWINCH MOUNTMade of 6mm steel folded plate and polyester coated. No drilling ormodification required other than the removal of the front spoiler. Theintegrated bumper is fully compatible with the Bearmach aluminium sumpguard (BA 083A).

FRONT LAMP GUARDS (Discovery Facelift Version)

Made of steel and nylon coated, all brackets are nylon coated, all bolts arestainless. The front light guards incorporate a power wash cut out designed toensure the vehicle’s headlamp washers are not impeded.
