2005-2006 Rensselaer Annual Fund REPORT Dear Friend, The transformation at Rensselaer continues to unfold at a dramatic pace. Without question, your commitment to this institution is the primary reason we have achieved so much. As we enter the third year of the most ambitious campaign in our history, Renaissance at Rensselaer: The Campaign for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Rensselaer Annual Fund will play a prominent role in our success. Last year you joined more than 17,200 Rensselaer alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff who con- tributed to the Rensselaer Annual Fund during the period of July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006. Let me express my gratitude and thanks to you for your commitment to Rensselaer during this critical time in our history. As the backbone of the Campaign, the Annual Fund ensures we will achieve our long-term vision for Rensselaer. With your support, you have demonstrated your belief in Rensselaer and our students, who will become the next leaders in science, engineering, and related fields in the 21st century. Throughout its history, Rensselaer has been at the forefront of many great achieve- ments. Today is no exception. Rensselaer and our students are poised to lead in solving the many challenges we face. The Annual Fund helps us to meet those challenges. It provides the fundamental resources necessary for every exceptional Rensselaer student, including support for scholarships, for essential student programs and activities, and other opportunities for learning. Students are the center of all we do at Rensselaer. With the flexibility that these unrestricted dollars provide to the university, we are able to shape the Institute to address the needs of our students, helping them to be the best they can be. Again, thank you for your support of the Rensselaer Annual Fund. The power to make a difference in the lives of our students lies with each of you, and I look forward to counting you among our donors in 2006-2007. “ As an engineering student,

I relied on the scholarships

I received for my Rensselaer

education—this would not

have happened without the

Rensselaer Annual Fund.

I’m happy to give back and

help in a way that benefits

our future engineers,

scientists, and leaders.”

When you speak to Diane Reineke’82 about her Rensselaer experience, she is fiercely positive about whatshe hopes to give back to her almamater. But then, Reineke has manyreasons for her loyalty: Diane is aRensselaer legacy and is married to a Rensselaer alumnus, SeanReineke ’82. Her twin sister, DebraPerkins ’82 and brothers JeromeOzovek ’79 and John Ozovek ’71 are also Rensselaer alumni!

Reineke reflects upon her time as a student at Rensselaer, and the significance of the support shereceived through the RensselaerAnnual Fund. Diane has a bachelor’sdegree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer.

With such a deeply held connec-tion to Rensselaer, it may come as no surprise that Diane has spent thepast eight years as a dedicated

volunteer for the Rensselaer AnnualFund. Currently, Reineke is serving asthe corporate match chair for theRensselaer Annual Fund, a positionshe has held for the past four years.Prior to this volunteer role, sheserved for five years as a corporateagent volunteer within LockheedMartin for Rensselaer.

While Diane is presently servingas vice president, business develop-ment at Thales Communications, Inc.in Clarksburg, Maryland, she makesthe time to provide support and guid-ance as a volunteer on the nationalRensselaer Annual Fund leadershipteam. Reineke says, “I enjoy being avolunteer because it keeps me con-nected to the Rensselaer community—it’s rewarding to be able to helpthe Annual Fund team meet its goalsand know that the results will benefitso many deserving students.”

Rensselaer parents continued the proud tradition of making a gift in honor of their son or daughter in 2005-2006. The current parents of graduating seniors listed below showed their support forRensselaer with a special gift to the Rensselaer Annual Fund, and we are grateful for their generosity.

A Message fromAndy Woo ’00 As a young alumnus looking backon my four years at Rensselaer, I remember being awarded afinancial aid package thatincluded an alumni scholarshipto help support my education. It was such a great feeling thatRensselaer could offer such anice reward to top students likeme based on both merit andneed. It made my parents sohappy that they sent my sisterhere also!

Knowing that there is such a need for alumni to support current students and their educa-tions, I have done so much tocontribute more to Rensselaerfinancially, even as a young alumnus. I really would like to seethe university continue to be theplace of greater diversity, talent, and knowledge. Together, we canmake sure that Rensselaer will beknown not just for its outstandingengineering programs, but for allit does to further improve oursociety and our quality of lifethrough technology andresearch.

Year after year, I feel inspiredto give back to the institution thatgave so much to me because Ibelieve in what Rensselaer hasdone for me, my fellow alumni, and all the students who will jointhe ranks as our newest alumni. I am proud to be part of the Rensselaer community, and knowI can continue to be a represen-tative for this change. Thank youfor joining me in this effort!

The Patroon Scholars Program, founded by former Rensselaer TrusteeEdward E. Hood Jr. in 1995, is essential for recruiting and retaining highlyqualified students from diverse intellectual, geographic, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. Recognizing that the quality of our studentsdepends in part on the availability of scholarship support, Rensselaerthanks its generous alumni and friends who have ensured that Rensselaerstudents have benefited from the Patroon Scholars Program.

Currently, 87 percent of our undergraduate student body receives someform of financial aid. Gifts to the Patroon Scholars Program will providetuition support for one or more undergraduate students throughout theirstay at Rensselaer, and is an excellent way to invest in the education andfuture of Rensselaer students.
