What do our librarians think?
•Really depends on the discipline
•Most don’t teach it
•They see improvement since launch
•They think it’s better than Federated
Search
![Page 7: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
What do our users think?
![Page 8: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
I found Summon easy to use
![Page 9: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
I was able to find relevant information on my research topic
![Page 10: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
I would recommend this search service to a friend or colleague
![Page 11: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
If it was available in the future, I would start my research with Summon
![Page 12: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Are you…
![Page 13: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Getting local records into Summon•Things to think about.
![Page 14: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Kinds of loading•MARC records•Harvesting via OAI-PMH•XML files
![Page 15: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
MARC Records•Unique record key
▫Linking back to Catalogue▫Updating or deleting records
•Local data not in Bibliographic record▫Call number▫Branch▫Holdings
![Page 16: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Handling Additions and Deletions
![Page 17: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
OAI-PMH•Better handling of additions and deletions•Is the meaning of the metatdata clear
outside of its context?•How complete is harvested metadata?
![Page 18: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Web-Scale Discovery
Problematic
Yet Enticing
![Page 19: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
University of Calgary’s metadata record counts in Summon:
• Over 2,270,000 MARC records• Just under 16,000 simple Dublin Core records from its
institutional repository (DSpace)• Over 79,000 simple Dublin Core records from its local
digitized collections (CONTENTdm and an in-house developed system)
• 3,931 records describing cultural objects from its museum collection
• 268 RAD-compliant xml records representing archival holdings
![Page 20: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
The Problem: An Unbalanced Scale
Full text vendor xml records
Local collection metadata records: MARC, DC, EAD, etc.
![Page 21: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Solution?
Through considering what the user-oriented goals of unified discovery services are:
• Facets met through leveraging available metadata?
• Increased access points with more detailed information on individual search results met through merging metadata records for the same resource, i.e., normalization?
![Page 22: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
The Importance of Facets?
•‘...facets help end users refine searches, navigate, browse and manage large results sets’ (Calhoun, Online Catalogs, v)
• ‘More Intuitive Searching: less complicated initial searches, less pre-limiting, more post-limits via faceting...’ (Harper, 11)
• ‘Improved search of catalog and local resources: keyword, facets, visualization’ (Burke, 28)
![Page 23: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
MARC Mapping:
![Page 24: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Enhanced MARC Mapping:
![Page 25: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Eg., Content Type Facet
![Page 26: Discovering the Next Generation of Library Search](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/5681684c550346895dde4632/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Increased Access Points and ClarityMORE:• hypertext links to resources and
supplementary information,•subject information, •tables of contents, •abstracts and summaries, •and any other details available
