If It Ain’t Got A Name, It Ain’t In The Game

For a great many consumers name recognition means everything! Mass marketing via television, radio, and printed matter and even the Internet all seem to lend credibility to a product and that and the fact that it is manufactured by a well known parent company is what establishes brand loyalty. There is a presumption that the product(s) is safe to use and that the labels plastered on the containers reveal all of the ingredients or components. In the case of air fresheners nothing could be further from the truth. Manufacturers avoid product transparence by allowing many of the toxic ingredients to fall into the category of “proprietary information” or “trade secrets”.

The History of Air Freshening Products

When the first “modern” air freshener was introduced in the late 1940’s environmental sustainability was never a consideration. The design and formula was based on the military model using chlorofluorocarbons for delivering pesticides via a pressured fine mist that would remain suspended in the air for a prolonged amount of time. In the 1950’s air freshener manufacturers began adding chemicals to neutralize and destroy odors.

Today the basic ingredients in air fresheners typically include volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, aerosol propellant, petroleum distillates, and  p-dichlorobenzene. Air freshener preparations often also include terpenes such as limonene, aldehydes, ketones, esters, alcohol and synthetic fragrances.

The Skinny On Car FreshenersPage 1

Little Trees leads the market share when it comes to car freshening units. The little pine tree shaped fragrance accessory hanging from the rearview mirrors of millions of cars are made of compressed paper that is treated with an oil that releases chemicals into the air. The chemicals mask odors, such as cigarette smoke, food, dirt and other items that can make the cramped interior of an automobile smell bad.

The chemicals used to treat these air fresheners can cause health problems when used by a smoker to mask the smell inside a car. The chemicals emitted from the cardboard version can cling to dust particles floating in the air. These dust particles then bond with the chemicals found in cigarette smoke. When inhaled in closed confinement, these bonded chemicals can cause irritation of the mouth, esophagus and lungs.

In recent years, these chemicals have been analyzed as potentially dangerous to humans. The most common chemical, phthalates, has been known to cause reproductive problems, hormonal abnormalities and birth defects. Other known ingredients that cause serious health issues are formaldehyde, acetone and terpenes. These chemicals contain pollutants that, when mixed with ozone, cigarette smoke or dust can cause breathing complications, headaches and damage the central nervous system.

According the MSDS sheet for Little Trees THE SPECIFIC CHEMICAL IDENTITIES OF THE INGREDIENTS OF THIS MIXTURE ARE CONSIDERED AS PROPRIETARY INFORMATION AND TRADE SECRETS.  The information on this MSDS was obtained from current and reliable sources. However, the data is provided without warranty, expressed or implied, regarding its correctness or accuracy. It is the user’s responsibility to determine safe conditions for use, and to assume liability for loss, injury, damage, or expense resulting from improper use of this product.

The Skinny On Car FreshenersPage 3

In January, 2012 Proctor and Gamble decided to toss its car freshening product in the ring with the launch of Febreze Car Vent Clips. The trouble is P&G like almost all other freshening product manufactures disclosed virtually nothing about what the chemical components of the fresheners were. The following information is listed on the product MSDS sheet:

SECTION III - COMPOSITION AND INGREDIENTSThe fragrance contains one or more components at greater than 1% concentration (in the fragrance) which are considered hazardous per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 (See Section VII for applicable exposure limits) and/or WHMIS under HPA. The Real Skinny On Room Air Fresheners- Plug-Ins

There is little doubt that most consumers of air freshening products haven’t heard the slogan “Plug it in, plug it in”. But maybe now is to the time to rethink that purchase, that is according to The Endowment for Medical Research who has suggested "air fresheners" should be called "air pollutants." Many brands contain known toxic chemicals. A 2002 EPA study testing plug-in air fresheners found that the fragrance chemicals in these products react with common indoor air pollutants to produce serious health hazards. Air freshener chemicals have been implicated in cancer, neurological damage, reproductive and developmental disorders. They can also aggravate or trigger asthma attacks.

A study released by The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) evaluated 14 air fresheners and found that 12 contained substances called phthalates, a group of chemicals that are used to dissolve and carry fragrances, soften plastics, and are also sealants and adhesives. The FDA has no regulations on the use of phthalate content on products and does not consider the quantities to which people are exposed to be harmful. Studies have shown that phthalates can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive system, especially the developing testes.

One of the chlorinated hydrocarbons that is long-lasting in the environment and stored in body fat. Banned in California."•Ethanol: "derived from petroleum and is carcinogenic ... toxic to the skin, respiratory, cardiovascular, developmental, endocrine, neurological and gastrointestinal systems."•Formaldehyde: "toxic if inhaled, poisonous if swallowed. skin and eye irritant.
