Energy in Central Asia Program (ECAP)ecAP examines central Asia’s energy industry, the poli-
tics of oil and gas, energy commodities, and the potential
environmental impact of rapid growth. it concludes with a
weeklong series of meetings with industry executives, ana-
lysts, activists, and policy-makers in the energy field.
ProgrAm SnAPShot � ProgrAm FoCuS: energy policy, central Asian business culture
� ProgrAm PEriod: summer, 4 weeks (3 weeks of class and 1-week practicum)
� loCAtion: KiMeP University in Almaty, Kazakhstan
� Eligibility: open to undergraduate and graduate students; no prior knowledge of russian or Kazakh is necessary. Must be 18 to apply.
The AcAdemic ProgrAmParticipants complete 60 hours (3 weeks) of in-class instruction on such topics as energy commodities, the global energy market, and Kazakhstan’s oil and gas industry. Students also receive daily language instruction in Russian or Kazakh, with no prior language study required. Content courses are taught in English by expert faculty and yield 6 - 7 U.S. credits in Area Studies and Economics through Bryn Mawr College.
TrAvel/Business PrAcTicumUpon conclusion of the three-week course, participants take part in insightful meetings in Almaty and Astana with key players in the energy industry. Past participants have met with Chevron, Halyk Finance, and USAID.
housing And meAlsParticipants live in dormitory housing with other program participants and are responsible for all meals. Dorms include
communal kitchen access and are located near on-campus dining facilities.
suPPorT servicesAmerican Councils conducts comprehensive pre-departure and on-site orientations. Full- time in-country staff oversee all aspects of the program, assist participants in personal and administrative matters, and provide 24-hour emergency aid. All participants are enrolled in comprehensive health and accident insurance during the program.
