A word from the publisher…

The Gale Digital Collections program is all about the raw material of scholarship. Our purpose is to enable historical research and discovery. We make this happen by publishing essential materials that help students, teachers, professors, and scholars interpret the complexities of history.

This year Gale proudly celebrates ten years of digital publishing. We are grateful to our customers (over 1,000 institutions worldwide); to our library partners (we have sourced content from over 300 institutions); and mostly to the users of Gale Digital Collections, who continue to interpret history in ways that shed fresh light on our shared past. At Gale, we are excited about the future of digital publishing. In 2012 we will release the first archives of Nineteenth Century Collections Online, the single most ambitious undertaking ever in the world of digital scholarship. And we will support existing programs, too—in law; in newspapers; in cultural history; and in our visionary Archives Unbound program—with rich new offerings curated by leading scholars. I invite you to find out more about Gale Digital Collections here, in our 2012 catalog, and on our website, gdc.gale.com. Very truly yours,Jim DraperVP/Publisher, Gale

National Geographic magazine is the official journal of the National Geographic Society, one of the world’s largest nonprofit educational and scientific organizations . Recognized for some of the highest-quality photojournalism and cartography in the world, this award-winning, iconic magazine is famous for providing unparalleled, in-depth coverage of cultures, nature, science, technology and the environment .

Featuring the complete archive of the magazine to the mid-1990s, National Geographic Magazine Archive, 1888-1994, includes every page and every photograph, all fully searchable through an intuitive interface .

When the magazine debuted in 1888 as a scholarly, scientific journal, it reflected the interests of its small, mostly professional, readership . Between its conservative, brown covers, there were no photographs — only studious articles that discussed such topics as “Geographic Methods in Geologic Investigation” and “The Great Storm of March 11-14, 1888 .”

More than a century later, the now yellow bordered National Geographic brings the world of geography — in its broadest sense — to some 60 million readers around the globe each month . With comprehensive, timely articles and legendary photographs and maps, the magazine documents life on our planet and beyond, and interprets the world’s sweeping changes through the lens of personal experience . Through the decades, National Geographic has brought its readers gripping first-person accounts of epic exploration and discovery, from Hiram Bingham’s work at Machu Picchu to Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking research with chimpanzees to Robert Ballard’s discovery of the Titanic .

Every article, every photograph and every map of this vast knowledge base is faithfully reproduced in National Geographic Magazine Archive, 1888-1994 . This incomparable archive is an essential resource for researchers of all ages as well as a fascinating collection for general readers .
