PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

Private Instruction is central to musical study for most stu-dents ages 6 and older. For beginners of any age to advanced stu-dents, Brookline Music School offers lessons on a wide array of orchestral, jazz, and folk instruments, as well as piano and voice:

Each student is matched with a teacher based on level, musical interests, and learning style. Our faculty strives to instill excellent technique and musicianship, and to inspire students to practice independently and grow artistically.

Private lessons take place at Kennard House, and throughout Brookline in multiple public school locations.

MUSIC THERAPY

Music Therapy provides children and adults with the opportunity to explore and create music in a supportive, individually tailored setting. Music-based tasks foster the development of motor, communication, cognitive, and social abilities. Individual and group sessions are available.

MUSICAL BEGINNINGS

Early Childhood Music classes provide children with a strong musical foundation in research-based, musically rich, developmentally appropriate, and fun environments.

• Music Play (newborn–3 years ) • Musical Adventures (3–4 years)

Discovering Instruments classes offer students the opportunity to explore instruments and musicianship with their peers in engaging and creative group settings.

• Music Moves for Piano (Pre-K–2nd grade)• Instrument Discovery (Kindergarten) • Introduction to Harmonica (1st–2nd grade)• Introduction to Ukulele (1st–2nd grade)• Introduction to Guitar (2nd–3rd grade)

Vocal Discovery classes introduce students to singing songs from a variety of genres, exploring harmony, and learning basic vocal anatomy. This program is designed for students in 1st through 5th grade as a precursor to private vocal instruction.

Suzuki Instruction for violin and flute students as young as age 4 combines weekly private lessons with regular group classes. Parents or caretakers attend all lessons and classes, actively supporting students’ learning and at-home practice. Dance classes for girls and boys explore kinesthetic creativity by using music, props, games, and play to develop and link students’ creative movement into more complex choreography and phrases. • Creative Dance (4–5 years)• Pre-Ballet (4–5 years)• Ballet (6–8 years)• Modern Dance (6–8 years)• Dance Ensembles (9–12 years)

PERFORMING ENSEMBLES

Performing Ensembles in a variety of genres are availableby placement audition for intermediate to advanced instrumentalists and vocalists. In classical chamber groups and jazz/rock bands, performers sharpen their listening and collaborative skills through weekly rehearsals, inspiring one another to new levels of performance. Instrument- and voice-specific groups explore participants’ common musical craft in greater depth, supplementing private study.

Musical Opportunities Beyond Lessons Students at BMS are part of a vibrant musical community, offering rich musical experiences including: • Performance Opportunities: Students enrolled in private

lessons participate in regular school-wide and studio recitals, as well as themed recitals centered around a composer or style, with staff accompanists provided at no additional cost.

• Workshop and Master Classes: Workshops, guest master classes, and other special events, including honors evaluations and festivals, are organized throughout the school year by department.

• Dynamic Duos: This program invites students enrolled in lessons to pair with a partner for a collaborative performance project and special concert each spring at no additional cost.

• Teen & Adult Salons: Salons are informal, students-only events, twice per semester, for supportive and informal sharing and discussion of works-in-progress.

• Discount on Weekly Ensembles and Classes: Students enrolled in a full semester of private lessons receive discounted tuition on weekly performing ensembles and other group classes, such as theory and musicianship.

Summer InstructionBrookline Music School is open year-round, and students may continue private instruction throughout summer with flexible scheduling. Students may also select from a variety of summer classes and workshops.
