Science Soil Mini Lab 1.Fill a Mason Jar half full with soil. 2.Wet the soil until muddy and tap the jar to settle the soil. 3.Mark the level of soil on the jar with a permanent marker or whiteout. 4.Optional: put a teaspoon of calgon in the jar. 5.Let the soil sit for 40 seconds, mark the level of soil in the jar. This is the sand portion. 6.Wait six more hours and mark the level of soil in the jar. The difference between the bottom mark (the sand) and the second mark is the silt portion of the soil. The total sand plus silt is the distance from the bottom of the jar to the second mark.
