Maple Ridge and PittMeadows have much tooffer, as this guide will

outline, from powerboatingon Pitt Lake to mountainbiking on Blue Mountainor flightseeing over all of it. There are attractionslike the Meadows CornMaze and WildPlay tree-top course. The ACT has noshortage of events to takein, and Maple Ridge and

Pitt Meadows, together,offer a variety of golf courses to choose from.

But much of whatmakes the two communi-ties special, what makespeople move here or keepcoming back, are theirnatural surroundings.

Camping in Golden EarsProvincial Park is not onlyclose to home for many,but it is loaded with trails

for hiking and horse-back riding. The water atAlouette Lake is as cold

and clear as any, and thepicnic area is perfect forday trips, birthday BBQsand family get-togethers. The municipal dikes here

offer not only views of the majestic Golden EarsMountains, but wildlife,from eagles and hawks,herons and cranes, all set

amongst acres and acres of farmland and following thepath of the Alouette River. There are more trails in

the Malcom Knapp UBCResearch Forest, andamongst water falls atCliff Park and throughoutKanaka Creek Regional Park. Those who live here

know these trails well,because they are all soclose to home; what betterthan a Saturday morn-ing walk in the woods? The two communities

host many special eventsthroughout the year, as well- CountryFest, Pitt MeadowsDay and Ghost Ridge areamong the best. Puttingthem on requires many

Tourism Maple Ridge andPitt Meadows isn’t just for

visitors to the area. Theorganization offers plentyfor locals, too, and there area plethora of different waysfor people to get involved.

“We’re actually a re-source for locals,” ex-ecutive director KristinaGervais said. “We’ve gota lot of ideas that noteveryone knows about.”

Gervais said they canprovide information

on all sorts of local rec-reational activities.

“There’s canoeing, there’swalking on the dikes, andthere are no more parkingfees in Golden Ears park, sopeople can go experiencethe beauty there,” she said.

One local activity Gervaisparticularly recommendsis the self-guided CircleFarm Tour, which offers

residents a chance to check out local farms, winer-ies and greenhouses.

“It’s getting to knowthe people who makeit, bake it or grow it,”she said. “It’s a really fundrive around town.”

Gervais said anotherintriguing activity comesfrom the Red Hawk Survival

Training Institute.“They actually take

you out in the woodsand teach you how tosurvive,” she said.

Residents can find outmuch more of what thelocal area has to offer onthe organization’s web-site, www.mapleridge-pittmeadows.com, whichfeatures information oneverything from arts andculture events to maps

and information on almostevery conceivable out-door activity. Gervais saidthey’ve focused on making

the website accessible toresidents, and their commu-nity calendar in particularoffers an up-to-date listingof what’s going on in town.

“Our website, we’reconstantly updating it withnew ideas,” Gervais said.“We maintain a communitycalendar of events, andwe work really hard onkeeping that up to date.” The organization also

runs the Harris Road visitorcentre, and completeda substantial renovationthere earlier this year.

“We just finished doing acomplete overhaul on thevisitor centre,” Gervais said.“We look a lot differentthan the old tourism office.”

One of the features of the renovation is a com-pletely new gift shop.

“We just added it whenwe did our refresh in thespring,” Gervais said. That shop features a

wide variety of merchan-dise from local and B.C.companies. Gervais saidone particular highlightis their selection of FirstNations crafts and artwork.

“We have a really greatselection of First Nationsproducts,” she said.“Everything is made inB.C., and royalties arepaid to the artists.”

Other local products

they offer include GlobalCoffee, roasted in MapleRidge, and Hard BitePotato Chips, which havebeen featured on CBC’sDragon’s Den entrepre-neurship show. Gervais saidtheir offerings from localcompany Berry Boys havealso been a big hit so far.

“They have a hugeselection of dried blue-

berry products,” she said.“Their family has beenfarming in the commu-nity for a long time.”

The visitor centre also hasplenty of information forlocals preparing to headelsewhere in the province.

“We can help trip-plan forall of B.C.,” Gervais said.

Gervais said summer isthe busiest time for theorganization, and they canalways use more volunteers.No experience is required,and they’ll help you getaccustomed quickly.

“We have a really greattraining program.”

She said the tourismorganization’s work isimportant to promotingeverything Maple Ridgeand Pitt Meadows have tooffer to a wider audience.

“People want to know,‘Why should I come here?’”

Pitt Lake has turned intoone of the most popularboating destinations in

the Lower Mainland.According to BrianStefiuk, owner of PittMeadows Marine, one of the biggest attractionsof the lake is that there’sroom for everyone.

“It’s the size of the lake,”he said. “You can put1,000 boats up there andstill not be crowded.”

At 24 kilometres inlength, Pitt Lake is the

largest freshwater tidallake in North America.

“The local area attractsthe wakeboarders, thewaterskiers,” Stefiuk said.

For those who prefer ascenic boat voyage with

plenty of wildlife sight-ings, Pitt Lake has plentyto offer from that per-

spective as well, particu-larly with the many ospreyswho live in the area.

“We’ve got lots of wildliferight here,” Stefiuk said. The lake also connects to

a wide variety of trails thatcan let visitors explore thearea outside of a boat.

“There’s a dock at the farend of the lake, with bikingand hiking,” he said. “Thereare also natural hot tubs.”

Stefiuk said those andother off-water activitiescan be a great alternativeif the weather turns toougly for powerboating.

“If it’s too bad of a dayfor boating, you can walk,”

he said. “There’s a lodge atthe far end where they dorafting and fly-fishing.” The lake has plenty of

sandy beaches, islands andmarine campsites that areonly accessible by boat toexplore. The shore ranges

from mountainsides tosmall streams and coves,so there are a wide varietyof scenic views to check out. Conditions on thelake can be quite vari-able, though, so those

days that aren’t great forboating do happen.

“Seas can be quite largeat times. I recommend 16feet and up,” Stefiuk said.“It’s more stable becausethe weather can change.”

Stefiuk also recommends

bringing a full comple-ment of safety gear if you’re going out on thelake, including an anchor,flares and life jackets.

“It’s better to besafe than sorry.”

GOLDEN EARS

PROVINCIAL PARK

Golden Ears park hasthe province’s busiestpark and most popu-lar campgrounds. The park has three

vehicle-accessible camp-grounds: Alouette has

205 sites; Gold Creek has 148 sites; and NorthBeach has 55 sites. There are also two group

campgrounds and walk-inback country camping.

Alouette and GoldCreek have hot show-ers and flushing and pittoilets, while the morerustic North Beach has noshowers and pit toilets.

Campfires are allowed

in the provided fire ringsonly, unless there is afire ban, and firewoodcan be purchased.

Camping fees in theregular season are $30for Alouette, $30 for

Gold Creek and $21for North Beach. To avoid disappointment,

use the reservation sys-tem. Between 40 and 62per cent of the campsitesare dedicated for reserva-tions, with the remainderoffered throughout the

season on a first-come,first-served basis. The first-come sites fill

ZsaZsa Stiasny of EquuTrails said her organi-zation, which offers guidedhorseback tours through-out the Lower Mainland,does a lot of riding on theGolden Ears ProvincialPark trails, in particular.

“The ones we use are pri-marily close to the Golden

Ears park,” she said. “InGolden Ears park, there’squite an extensive trail net-work. Most of the trails startat the main horse corral;there’s good parking ac-cess, good staging access.”

Stiasny said there’s aplethora of trails to ex-plore in the park, andmost are interconnected.

“If you wanted to ride

for a couple of days,you could,” she said.Not all trails are created

equal, though, and whichone to take dependson your horse as well asyour own riding skill. There’s a wide enough

variety of trails in the areathat everyone can findsomething, though.

“It’s all different rangesthroughout the whole

Maple Ridge area,” Stiasnysaid. “There’s something forpeople of all skill levels.”

In Golden Ears, EquuTrailsoffers everything fromtwo-hour trips to MikeLake or Lookout Point, ahalf-day trip up AlouetteMountain and full-day tours to AlouetteLake or Gold Creek.

“It’s a pretty steep incline

at the start,” she said. “If you go straight up anddown, it’s two hours.” The Golden Ears trails

also connect to othernetworks, including thetrails around Allco Park,which can expand po-tential riding options.

“You can ride down toAllco Park and loop back around,” Stiasny said. There are more trails

MAPLE RIDGE MUSEUM

The museum is located ina well-maintained heritagehome built in 1907 for themanager of the HaneyBrick and Tile company.

Learn how the community’spioneers dressed, cooked,worked and played. The museum is stocked

with furniture, householditems, native artifacts, aminiature railway dioramaand Canadian PacificRailway caboose in thefront yard. It also housesthe community archives. This year, the museum

is dragging out someof its older items to cre-ate a few new displays.

With a combination of grant money, the museumpurchased new displaycases, said Allison White,curator for the MapleRidge Historical Society.

Most of the currentdisplay themes are beingrevamped, with new itemson display for the history

logging and farming inthe district, as well as theJapanese settlement.

“Only eight per cent of our collection is on dis-play,” White said, so thenew display cases willallow for more of it to betaken out of storage. The museum will also

have a new Finnish settle-ment display and one called

“Modern Convenience,”as well as a temporaryone featuring the his-tory of the Maple Ridgeuniversity women’s club,which performed puppet

shows and workshops atthe local library and at artscentres around the FraserValley, starting in the 1970s.

The club wrote A Historyof Settlement in MapleRidge. Some of the pup-pets will be on display. The museum’s largest

event of the year is itsCanada Day Carnival, onJuly 1, from 1-4 p.m. It will

again feature old costumesfor children to dress up in,heritage games like beanbag toss and croquet, aswell as face painting andrefreshments like cottoncandy, popcorn and fruit. The museum is lo-

cated at 22520 116th Ave.,open Wednesdays andSundays from 1-4 p.m.year-round, with ex-tended summer hours.

HANEY HOUSE

The Haney family – MapleRidge’s most well-knownpioneers and the name-sake of the downtown area

– donated this heritagehome to the District of Maple Ridge in the 1970s,with the museum open-ing to the public in 1978.

Completed in 1878, it is

furnished with householditems, photographs, furni-ture and memorabilia fromthat and subsequent eras.

The Bell-Irving KanakaCreek Fish Hatchery was es-tablished almost three de-cades ago in Kanaka Creek Regional Park, its historydates back much further.

The land it sits on wasoriginally inhabited bythe Kwantlen people.During the 19th century,it was settled by nativeHawaiians who worked forthe Hudson’s Bay Company,

which led to the originof the creek’s name. The name of the creek

comes from the practice of hiring labourers, or Kanakas,from the Hawaiian Islands.

Later on, the land be-came a working farm. The property it sits on

and the creek was farmedby the Cuthbert fam-ily in the ‘20s and ‘30s.

After a couple of own-

ership transitions, theproperty was sold toMetro Vancouver andturned into a hatchery.

It was dedicated byLieutenant GovernorBell-Irving in 1983. The hatchery is oper-

ated by Metro Vancouver

Parks, the habitat enhance-ment branch of the federalDepartment of Fisheriesand Oceans, the fisheriesbranch of the provincialMinistry of the Environmentand the Kanaka Educationand EnvironmentalPartnership Society. Overits decades of operation,it’s raised millions of fish. The hatchery has put

close to eight million fish

through. It focusses onchum and coho salmonand raises pink salmonevery second year. Onaverage, the hatcheryreleases 200,000 chum and200,000 coho every year.

That doesn’t mean eachyear is the same, though.

The numbers vary consider-ably depending on weatherand water conditions. The hatchery is located

at the north end of thepark, near several hikingtrails featuring picturesque

views. McClain said theywelcome drop-in visitsfrom hikers and tourists. The hatchery is open

seven days a week. Moreformal tours are offeredSaturday afternoons from1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Grouptours can also be bookedfor other times by calling604-530-4983. The hatch-ery welcomes volunteersas well. More information

The mountain bikingscene in Maple Ridge andPitt Meadows has explodedlately, and Maple RidgeCycle owner /operator TroyScott said it isn’t hard tofind good trails locally.

“Off pretty much every

road from Dewdney Trunk up to Mission, there’s some-thing going on,” he said.

Scott said there’s some-thing for every mountainbiker, from those who pre-fer serene flat rides to thosewho love steep downhilltracks with lots of jumps.

“It’s anything from rid-ing on the dikes to experttrails to jumping,” he said.

“There are a lot of bal-anced trails, jump trails,all that sort of thing.” The trails in Golden Ears

Provincial Park in particularoffer a wide range of op-tions for people of all skilllevels. The park features ev-

erything from singletrack todoubletrack to wide pavedor gravel roads. There aresteep paths that will chal-lenge experienced riders,but there are also easyways down for those whoare just getting started orprefer watching the sceneryto speeding down hills.

Scott said mountain bik-

ing can be a pretty easysport to learn, and ourwide variety of beginner-friendly trails helps to makeit even simpler to pick up.

“The biggest thingis just getting expo-

sure to it,” he said.Scott said one of the top

ways to get going is justto drop into one of thelocal bike shops and talk with the staff to see whatequipment and trails arebest suited to your needs.

“Get into the shop and

talk to the people,” hesaid. “They’ll put youin the type of bike forwhat you want to do.”

He said the area’s widevariety of trails makes iteasy to start slow, gradu-ally gain skill and experi-ence and work your wayup to the toughest ones if that’s what you want to do,but there are also enougheasy trails to keep those

who prefer a simpler ridehappy for a long time.

“There’s something foreveryone,” Scott said.“The sky’s the limit.”

“As a guide, you have toknow what’s available onwhat river and what lake,”Simms said. “You haveto be licensed with theprovincial government;there’s a test to write.”

Keeping current on thefishing conditions on the

Lower Mainland’s wa-terways can be a prettycomprehensive task forguides like Simms whocover a vast swathe of areaon their fishing expeditions.

“I go all the way from theFraser River to the Pitt River,from the Harrison River toAlouette Lake,” Simms said.

Each of those areas hasits own hotspots and typesof fish to target, which canmean that each fishing tripis a unique experience.

“We do sockeye on theFraser,” Simms said. “Wedo dry flyfishing on theAlouette River in the sum-mer, that’s very elegant.”

Some fish, like sockeye,are only available in specific

years when they come back in strong enough numbers,but there are always sometypes of fish available.

“My season startsaround April and goesto November,” Simms

said. “There are pink every second year, cohoand chum every year.”

Simms said each fishingspot has its own uniquecharms, but his favouriteis the Harrison River.

“The Harrison is myhome stream,” he said.“I really enjoy it.”

Fishing with a guidedoesn’t have to be allthat expensive, and youdon’t have to be expe-rienced. Simms charges$250 for at least five hoursof fishing for up to threepeople, including rods,reels, lines, flies and life

jackets, lunch and freecasting lessons if desired.

“The tackle’s all sup-

plied, the lunch is sup-plied,” he said.

Simms said the chief advantage of hiring a guideis the knowledge theycan provide, though. Hetries to be as generous as

possible in that area withwhat he’s learned from hiseight years as a guide.

“You’re paying for theknowledge,” he said. “I haveno problem giving lots of knowledge to people.”

Simms said he’s workedwith everyone from begin-ning fishermen to experts.

“I’ve had a wide range,”he said. “I’ve had expertfishermen from Englandwho just wanted a guide,I’ve had a guy from Chinawho had never cast afly before. He hauled ina 20-pound salmon.”

For Simms, guided flyfish-ing is a chance to do whathe loves and make newcontacts along the way.

“It’s fun to meet people,”he said. “It’s an enjoy-able experience for me.”

Named for the twin peaks

It extends north throughuntouched mountainareas to the wall of mountain peaks and val-leys which divide it andGaribaldi Provincial Park. The park houses one of

the largest campgroundsin the province with 353vehicle/tent campsiteswelcoming visitors to twolocations inside the park,at Alouette Lake and GoldCreek campgrounds, back-country or walk-in campingat Alder Flats on the WestCanyon Trail and PanoramaRidge on the Golden Earstrail, with advisories that

some of the more outof the way sites do nothave facilities provided.

Fifty-five campsites alsoadorn sandy North Beach,an open beach in front of the forested sites, and agreat place to watch meteorshowers in early August.

Underneath a canopy of second growth western

hemlock, western red cedarand Douglas fir trees, camp-ers and day trippers can befound exploring the park on foot, by boat, on theirbikes and on horseback.

Campers can swim at allcampgrounds and day-use areas and canoeing ispopular on Alouette Lakewith rentals available inthe Alouette day-use area.

Freshwater fishing is also

available at Alouette Lake,Mike Lake and Gold Creek.

A four-lane cementsurface boat launch atthe south end of AlouetteLake has overnightparking available forvehicles and trailers.

Boaters should note,there is no nearby marinato moor boats overnight. The highlight of the

park is the scenery andthe highlight of GoldenEars is the camper’s abilityto enjoy the exposure toso much of what makesBritish Columbia famous.

An extensive network of trails through whichcampers can enjoy thescenery and explorethe area makes up over

20-kilometres of gravel/dirt paved adventure.Hiking, cycling and

horseback riding can bedone on any one of a seriesof trails which make up theweb throughout the park.

Golden Ears has themost available hiking trailsthis close to Vancouver.Over a dozen trails leadto various destinationsthroughout the park,

including the 8-mile/12-kmone-way journey to theGolden Ears themselves.

Near the park headquar-ters, small Mike Lake isthe starting point for theAlouette Mountain Hiking

Trail – 12-miles/20-kmreturn – to the summitof Alouette Mountain.Once finished, you canenjoy a panoramic view

opened its doors in May2003, following morethan 13 years of lobbyingby the arts community. The 43,000-square-foot

building was the district’sfirst multi-purpose artscentre, incorporatingfacilities for both per-forming and visual arts.

Mike Lake Trail: Main Corralto Mike Lake. Horse and hikingtrail (4.2 kilometres; suggestedhiking time: 2 hours; eleva-tion change: 100 metres).

Incline Trail: Mike Lake to

Alouette Mountain Fire Access Trail. Horse and hiking trail (1.2 ki-lometres; suggested hiking time:1 hour; elevation change: 150metres). This steep trail followsthe “Incline” that was once usedby loggers as a route to skylinehuge logs down to Mike Lakefrom the trailhead. This shortcuteliminated 5 kilometres of therailroad haul down the mountain.

Alouette Mountain HikingTrail: Top of Incline Trail viaAlouette Mountain Fire Access Trail (10 kilometres; suggestedtime: 5 hours; elevation change:1,000 metres). The panoramicview from Alouette Mountain isspectacular. For many hikers thehighlight of the trail is the virginstands of mountain hemlock andyellow cedar. The return trip toAlouette Mountain can take up

to 9 or 10 hours. Be sure to carrywater in dry weather and expectsnow well into June. This trail is astrenuous hike requiring experi-ence and proper equipment.

Alouette Mountain Fire AccessTrail: Top of Incline Trail to desti-

nation northeast of Lake Beautiful(7.3 kilometres; elevation change:400 metres). The trail followsthe old fire access road throughsubalpine forest and eventu-ally through a “blowdown” areacaused by Typhoon Freda in 1962.

Menzies Trail: Park headquar-ters to Gold Creek parking lot.Horse, bicycling and hikingtrail (9 kilometres; suggestedhiking time: 4 1/2 hours;elevation change: minimal).

Lookout and Loop Trails:

West Canyon Trail (Golden EarsTrail): West Canyon parking lotto Alder Flats. Hiking trail only(5 kilometres; suggested time: 21/2 hours; elevation change: 250

metres). Trail follows an old log-ging grade for 3.2 kilometres thenswings uphill. At this point a shorttrail drops downhill to Lower Falls.

Golden Ears Trail: West Canyonparking lot to summit of NorthEar. Hiking trail only (12 kilome-tres; suggested time: 7 hours;elevation change: 1,500 metres).Follow the West Canyon Trailfrom the parking lot to AlderFlats. Beyond Alder Flats the trailswitchbacks upward on an oldlogging road then heads steeplyuphill to Panorama Ridge. Most

of the elevation gain is made inthis stretch. Listen for the nasalsqueak of pikas in the rock slides.Impressive view of Pitt Lake tothe west and mountains to theeast and north are possible fromPanorama Ridge. The ascent of the North Ear is made from theleft (east) side across a permanentsnowfield. Extreme caution isadvised and proper equipmentis recommended. Drinking watermay be scarce in dry weather be-tween Alder Flats and the snow-field. The round trip to Golden

Ears is an overnight expedition forall but the fittest hikers. Overnightcamping areas are located atAlder Flats and on PanoramaRidge around the mountain shel-ter which, itself, can accommo-date up to 8 people. Expect snowon Panorama Ridge into July. This trail is long and strenuousand should only be attempted byexperienced, well-equipped back-country travellers. No open firesare permitted in the backcountry.

Lower Falls Trail: Gold Creek parking lot to Lower Falls. Hiking

trail only (2.7 kilometres; sug-gested time: 1 hour; elevationchange: minimal). A very popular,easy walk along Gold Creek tothe 10-metre high Lower Falls. Abeach area halfway to the falls isa good spot for a picnic or a sun-bathe. Some of the best sceneryin the park is visible just beyond.

Rolley Lake There are two short walkingtrails in the park. Lakeside Loopis approximately 40 minutes

return and Rolley Falls is ap-proximately 10 minutes. For yourown safety and the preservationof the park, obey posted signsand keep to designated trails.Shortcutting trails destroysplant life and soil structure.

Kanaka Creek Kanaka Creek Regional Park of-fers beautiful walking trails off

of 256th Street. Rainbow Bridgeand marshes are located at thesouth end, Cliff Falls at the north.

This linear park is in severaldistinct units. The best trails areat the Riverfront and Cliff Fallssections of the park. First timevisitors are recommended tovisit Riverfront. Take LougheedHighway to the traffic lights at240th Street in Maple Ridge. Turn south towards the river andfollow River Road west 3 km tothe park entrance on your left.

Cliff falls The focal point of Kanaka Creek Regional Park is the falls, a spec-tacular water canyon popular asa picnic spot. The Canyon Trailoffers a treasure trove of naturalwonders in a short distance.Nursery logs, sword ferns, tower-ing Cedar, Hemlock and DouglasFir trees serve as a backdrop forthe tumbling and cascading creek.Unusual tailed frogs and the dip-per bird will be found along thecreek. Intriguing water-sculptedrock and sandstone formations

are visible on both branchesof the creek. Because of theprecipitous cliffs, it is absolutelyessential to follow the directionalsigns and not to stray beyondmarked boundaries on any partof the Cliff Falls trail system. The park entrance is located at25100 116 Avenue, Maple Ridge.

Hayward LakeA trail encircling the HaywardLake Reservoir offers a scenicday hike. The east side trail is10 km long, but there are otherinteresting stops on either end. There is a slight downhill ad-vantage to hiking the east sidetrail north to south, but if youplan to hike the entire length,consider using two vehiclesand parking one at each end.

Park at the Railroad Trail park-ing lot west of the Ruskindam. Travel east on Dewdney Trunk Road, then turn southafter Stave Falls dam.

Whether it’s security,

marketing the downtownor even power washingthe streets or scrubbingoff graffiti, the DowntownMaple Ridge BusinessImprovement Associationis the eyes and ears of theshop owners and operatorsin central Maple Ridge, foranother five years at least.

Maple Ridge council hasgiven preliminary approvalto a bylaw that will provide

funding to allow the BIA tocarry on from 2012 to 2017. That will create the

framework to allow ahigher levy, raising thetotal take next year fromits 1,000 or so members to

$193,500 from $163,500.

Ineke Boekhorst, execu-tive director with the BIA,said before requesting arenewal of the bylaw, theassociation asked its mem-bers earlier this year if itwanted the BIA to continue.

Of the 10 per cent whoreplied, all wanted theassociation to keep doingthe work it’s been do-ing the past five years.

When the BIA was first cre-

ated in 2006 the focus wason crime and safety. That’simproved in the down-town, thanks to a $50,000budget this year for that,provided by Maple Ridge.

And thanks to the

$50,000 annual facade-improvement program,the place is looking good.

“Now we feel that thedowntown looks a lotbetter, we feel that thecrime rate looks a lot

better. Now we feel it’stime to do marketing.” That will be directed

outside of Maple Ridge toencourage newcomers,but also aim at convincingMaple Ridge residents of

the merits of the core area.Boekhorst considers the

facade improvement pro-gram one of the highlightsof the past five years. This year, the asso-

ciation will dole out

$50,000 to eight busi-nesses to help them intheir spruce-up efforts. That, in turn, will gener-

ate renovations worth$3 million as businessesuse the free money to

But it’s now up to the

BIA to ensure that busi-nesses keep up theirpride in their premises,Boekhorst pointed out.

In a report to council,economic developmentmanager Sandy Blue saidthe BIA wants to broadenits focus and follow thedistrict’s strategic plan.

So far, the municipalityhas spent nearly $60 mil-lion on a new library, arts

centre, youth centre andMemorial Peace Park overthe past several years.

Combined with the SmartGrowth on the Ground-based plan, which calls foran eco-friendly downtown,

more than 1,500 newcondos have been builtin the downtown area.

“There’s lots goingon,” said Boekhorst.

Every spring there’sSparkle Week, a five-dayblitz complemented by aBIA-funded power-washing

of downtown sidewalks,which eventually willcover every pedestrianpath in the downtown.

Two other tasks taken onby the BIA are the muralprogram, and the speak-ers series, where memberscan network and learn.

As well, downtown MapleRidge’s old “Spirit” streetbanners got a second life asreusable shopping bags.

About three years ago theDowntown Maple RidgeBIA, in partnership withMeadowRidge and HaneyRotary Clubs, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Arts Council,District of Maple Ridge, City

of Pitt Meadows and SchoolDistrict No. 42 producedabout 85 nylon streetbanners which helpedcreate a festive, colourfulatmosphere for downtown,leading up to and duringthe 2010 Games. The ban-ners were all individually

hand-painted by schoolchildren throughout theschool district. Eventuallythese unique designs hadto be retired, so ratherthan sending them to thelandfill, with the help of the Alouette CorrectionalCentre for Women, theywere transformed into reus-able nylon shopping bags.

Avoided making 21,600•plastic bags each year.Avoided sending 301•kg (663 lb) of ny-lon to the landfill.

Saved up to 363•gallons of oil.Freed up 80 trees to•capture and store CO2from other sourcesfor a full year.

All proceeds from thesale of the shopping bagsgoes to the development

of new green spaces indowntown Maple Ridge. The shopping bags

Maze in Pitt Meadows.Being one of the largestcorn mazes in the PacificNorthwest, this year’stheme willbe com-prised of twomazes with6.3 kilome-tres of pathsdesigned tochallengethe most

directionally adept.Every year the Hopcott

family’s 17-acre fieldis turned into anotherdistinct design using aglobal positioning system(GPS). A tractor carves the

maze when the corn is stillsmall. It is estimated thateach maze takes one and

a half hours to complete.In addition to the maze,there are lots of fun activi-ties for children, including

a pettingzoo, a beeobservatory,hay wagonrides, or abarrel trainride throughthe maze

for those

who don’t want to get lost. This year the maze won’t

be open until August13th due to the spring’scold and wet weather.

variety of aerial sightsee-ing (or flightseeing) trips.Some of their prominent

trips include one fromPemberton to Whistler,one from Sechelt toPowell River, one over toNanaimo and one up theFraser Valley to Hope.

“We fly around the localuniverse here,” Georgassaid. “On an averageflight, we go for about

one and a half hours.”Georgas said the com-

“We’ve been doing thisfor over eight years andhad great response,” hesaid. “We do dozens of flights per month.”

Georgas said a flightsee-ing trip has proven quite

a popular attraction fortourists, as it provides adifferent perspective onB.C.’s spectacular vistas.

“It’s a great way for peoplefrom other countries tosee the Lower Mainland,”he said. “We have peoplefrom all over the world.”

trips for foreign visitorsheads downtown, providingan aerial view of Vancouverand its surroundings.

“We orbit the down-town core, then go toSeymour, Grouse, usuallyout to Barnston Island,”Georgas said. “It’s great

for overseas visitors.”Flightseeing isn’t just fortourists, though. Georgassaid plenty of locals havecaught the flightseeing bugas well, and the Golden EarsBridge has made it easierfor many to check it out.

“We have a lot of peoplethat come from theother side of the Fraser;Langley, White Rock,Abbotsford,” he said.

“White Rock, it’s only abouta 30-minute drive now.” The wide variety of trips

offered mean if you likewhat you see on your firstflightseeing expedition,there are plenty of otherareas you can try. The PittMeadows airport’s facili-ties, including the RunwayCafé restaurant, can alsohelp turn a flightseeing

trip into the anchor pointof an enjoyable day.“You can spend the

morning on the deck sip-ping coffee and watchingairplanes take off and land,”Georgas said. “We have alot of repeat business.”

suspended “surprises”. The skill level and height

Play is an active methodof learning, which is whychildren naturally excel atclimbing and scramblingacross our cleverly de-

signed obstacles. WildPlay’scourse elements combineoutdoor fun and chal-lenge in a way that allowschildren to explore theirlimits, feel empowered, andhone their physical skills. The Monkido Kids course

is lower than where the “bigkids” play. Our special de-sign ensures kids can reach

safety lines while movingfreely through their oneand a half hour adventure.

Chaperones use the widewalking trails beneath thecourse to observe theirchildren. Private guides areavailable with advance no-tice, additional fees apply. The business is run on a

reservation basis. Peopleusing the course have tobook ahead, limiting the

number of adventure-seekers on site. However,there will still be somewalk-in business.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to7 p.m. during peak seasonand 6 p.m. in off season. The park is open

COPA Flight 16 – Aero Club of B.C. will host anOpen House and a COPA For Kids Flight Programat Pitt Meadows Airport, starting at 10 a.m. on

June 26 – Airport Day.Folks attending the breakfast at Langley willhave time to fly over to Pitt Meadows for theevents. Three cadet groups will be in attendancein Second World War uniforms and will paradewith a band in front of a reviewing stand.Vintage Wings of Canada and The CanadianMuseum of Flight will each fly their aircraft overfor static display.Some of the COPA Flight 72 – B.C. FloatplaneAssociation aircraft are based at Pitt Meadows

The Pitt Meadows Arenais currently undergoing

a $7.5 million renovationthat will breathe new lifeinto the aging facility. The three-rink arena will

get a completely renovatedinterior, with a new conces-sion, office and skate shop,

as well as washroom anddressing room upgrades.

Much of the work beingperformed will be behindthe scenes. The piles thefacility sits on need to beupgraded to provide betterprotection from earth-quakes. Like much of lower

Pitt Meadows, the landthe arena sits on is made

up of unstable river sand. The arena’s heating and

air conditioning system willalso be updated, as will theice-making equipment.

And the ever-leaking roof? That will be fixed, too.

Nustadia RecreationInc. took over operationfor the arena in May. The company, which

operates seven facilitiesacross Canada, hired RayBoogaards as the arena’snew general managerand is negotiating with amajor franchise to oper-

ate the concession.Service interruptions

are expected as con-struction continuesthroughout the year.

Work on the sanitarysewer line has also startedand dressing rooms will beshutting down during thesummer months as crewsinstall new plumbing. The Red Rink will

also close from July toSeptember to speed upthe pace of construction.

If construction crewsdon’t run into surprises, theproject will be completedbefore the end of the year.
