2012 728,000
2013 881,000
2014 882,000
2015 859,000
2016 921,000

Healthcare traveller revenue and volume, 2011 -2019
• In 2019, Malaysia Healthcare achieved close to RM1.7 billion in revenue from hospital receipts.
However, according to the Departing Visitor Survey and Paid Accommodation report by Tourism
Malaysia, healthcare travel revenue which includes hospital, pharmaceutical, dental and clinic receipts
from tourists in 2019 was RM 2.93 billion.
• Healthcare travel brings in greater economic impact to the nation in out-of-hospital spending by the
patient and his/her accompanying travellers. Taking into account spending on wellness, transport,
accommodation, leisure and food, the healthcare travel industry has contributed a total of RM7 billion
to Malaysia’s economy in 2019.
▪ From 2011 – 2019, Malaysia Healthcare has experienced a nearly doubled growth in healthcare traveller volume.
▪ Malaysia Healthcare industry is growing at a CAGR of 16% between 2015 - 2019 against the APAC performance of 15% CAGR for the same period.
Malaysia has emerged as one of the top performing countries within the APAC region. The Global Market Report 2018 places Malaysia as the world’s top healthcare travel destination by volume. Note: The graph shows the number of healthcare travellers who have entered the country for medical reasons only, excluding wellness segment. Equally noteworthy is Malaysia’s emergence as a top 10 wellness destination. Malaysia’s ranking of eight outpaces many other famous locations and clearly affirms the country’s unique ability to attract travellers from around the world. Source: Global Wellness Institute
Aims for 2021 and Beyond
Our current target for 2021 is to earn more than RM520million in revenues, based on our expectation of some reopening of borders by second half of the next year and our amplification of marketing and promotions to our base markets.
For us to reach the RM1billion by 2022 and maintain our number 1 ranking, we need to see concerted effort from all players including investments, tourism, healthcare, airlines etc to come together to position Malaysia as a SAFE and TRUSTED destination.
MHTC will continue to brand and market Malaysia Healthcare to ensure that we are still top of mind and preferred and will welcome healthcare travellers as soon as we can. We also need to really look and consider how COVID-19 has affected the mindset of healthcare travellers and explore new catchments that accommodate this new way of doing things.
Top Treatments and Top Country of Arrivals
• The types of procedures sought after chiefly
depend on the profiles of the patients (i.e.
country of origin, age, gender etc.).
• Malaysia also caters to a high number of
international patients in urology,
ophthalmology and gastroenterology.
• Malaysia Healthcare have identified
Indonesia, Vietnam and China as core
markets based on the volume of healthcare
travellers, as well as growth potential of the
respective markets.
• Malaysia Healthcare plans to increase its
market penetration in those countries while
aggressively raising the country’s profile in
secondary markets like Bangladesh, Brunei,
and the Middle East.
