St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church
From Our Pastor, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler
Dear Friends, This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week! I want to thank everyone who participates in the life of our par-ish school, especially, of course, our Teachers, our Staff, and our Principal, Miss Nora Bucaj. They would all say that we should thank our parents and students for choos-ing St. Anthony of Padua. And all of us at our school want to thank the parish for your support over the years—and, we hope, into the future. St. Anthony of Padua School is a blessing to all of us. We are still growing accustomed to calling it St. An-thony’s again, after the many blessed years as Corpus Christi School. In some ways this year has been a tran-sitional year. We have been striving, as a school com-munity, to focus on having “Hearts for Jesus” as our pa-tron, Saint Anthony, so beautifully did. Our school motto is: “Discover. Live. Proclaim.” It guides us as well. It is my sincere hope and constant prayer that our young people will inspire us by the way they discover the Lord’s presence, live in real friendship with Him, and proclaim these realities by the joy that is theirs. The special moment found in this Sunday’s Gospel text has been a favorite one of mine since my own child-hood. I do not know why it has always stood out in my memory more than others. I do know that it has been fixed in my memory from the moment I heard it pro-claimed at Mass one Sunday “back in the day” and “back in Texas”. That in itself is worth our attention. In the years of being at Mass every Sunday there are cer-tain things which reach me and help me more than oth-ers. Maybe I wasn’t and maybe I am not as attentive as other people might be to things. I would be missing out, though, if I hadn’t been at Mass that “random” Sunday years ago. I would not have the attentiveness and focus on Jesus that hearing this passage gave me: Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the atten-dant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." I invite everyone to make the most of every opportunity we have to focus on Jesus—
