In the fall of 1998, after co-curat-ing the inaugural art exhibition at the National Steinbeck Center, I got an interesting phone call at our gallery in Pacific Grove. “This is Elaine Anderson Stein-beck calling from New York,’’ said a woman in a soft South-western accent, ``Would you do me a favor, please, Mr. Hauk? Would you look in a telephone book and tell me how many times you see my late husband John Steinbeck’s name connected to a business?’’ I found some half dozen businesses leading with the Steinbeck name. There was a dry cleaner, as I recall, a used car lot, even a dog kennel. I mentioned no business in Pacific Grove had appropriated the famous Steinbeck name and that seemed to please Mrs. Steinbeck. What she did with this informa-tion, I’m not sure.

Out of curiosity, I checked the 2014 telephone book and there were, again, a half dozen busi-nesses beginning with Steinbeck,

including, somewhat appropri-ately for a writer of agricultural labor issues, a produce market, but, again, none in Pacific Grove.

In fact, it is curious as to how few references there are noting his time in this city—a place that clearly inspired him.

Elaine Steinbeck, who was mar-ried to John from 1950 until until his death in 1968, spent time with John in the family’s Pacific Grove cottage and it was quite enough for her that he wrote some of his finest work in this town and that cottage, including ``Of Mice and Men.’’

Mrs. Steinbeck, was an actress and later made a name for her-self as one of the first women to become a successful stage manager, a field dominated by men. Mrs. Steinbeck became the executor and promoter of his work. She died in 2003 at the age of 88.

Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 as a Methodist church camp-ground. It was incorporated as a city on July 16, 1889 and became a Charter city on April 22,1927. Pacific Grove boasts over 1200 prop-erties in its Historic Inventory, more than any other city of its size in America. Sitting at the tip of the Peninsula, it is the only city to offer five miles of public shoreline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Bay. Pacific Grove is also one of the last remaining over-wintering locations for the Monarch Butterfly.

Growing up in Pacific Grove there was a legend of a Chinese village along our shores. Yet, as most legends go, the de-tails were hard to come by. In fact, so little was spoken about the village that its descendants have only recently be-come aware of their heritage—thanks to Gerry Low-Sabado, a 5th generation descendant of the village. Gerry was determined to awaken this sleeping history for her family and the entire community. In fact, it was in 1853 when Canton-ese Chinese fishermen established a fishing village in Pacific Grove. These brave families were among the very first to reach the new world from China. Their village once reached from the present site of the Hopkins Marine Station, to Point Alones, the present site of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. These Chinese fishermen were the first to commercialize the fishing industry in the Monterey Bay. Large Chinese junks/ships could be seen in the bay for more than fifty years. On May 16, 1906 the village was burned to the ground in a mysterious fire and the villagers were not allowed

to rebuild. Having lost their village and their livelihood many left the area. However, we are pleased to report descendents of the Village have flourished and have spread through-out the Monterey Peninsula, Califor-nia, and the United States.

Gerry Low-Sabado, Annie Holdren with the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, and local historic preservationist, Janet Cohen of Pa-cific Grove (pictured above), worked steadily for years to ensure the history of this village will be shared with the hundreds of thousands of people who travel the recreation trail, at its very site, along the Pacific Grove shoreline. Now, with the support of a number of local organizations, a large interpre-tive plaque marks the historical site of the Chinese Village.

Everyone has that pair of jeans they just can’t part with, some even have their mother’s fur in the back of the closet. Or how about that wedding dress from the 1980’s? You can’t throw it out! What do you do with these “treasures” when they don’t fit or are no longer in fashion? Refashion them! With the help of Golnesa and Pari your old duds can be fresh and new again!

These talented ladies are co-owners of Pari’s Boutique and Alterations, where the mother/daughter team have cre-ated an outlet for their talents. At Pari’s, you’ll find gently worn labels such as St. John and Jean Paul Gaultier, as well as fine jewelry and handbags. Mixed in with unique vintage finds are refashioned one-of-a-kind pieces designed by Golnesa herself.

What started as a passion for designing dance wear, blossomed when she went into partnership with her mother and expanded Pari’s alterations business to included vintage and de-signer resale.

Golnesa has since been invited to raid wealthy residents’ closets and mark their wares for resale. She has also become quite the talented stylist, helping women, young and not so young, edit their clos-ets for the 21st Century and beyond.

For this story Golnesa shows us the transformation of an outdated wedding dress into her modern masterpiece with removable train. For more information on how you can take advantage of her talents stop by Pari’s Boutique at 510 Lighthouse Avenue, #4, Pacific Grove.

Its chilly outside, even a little misty. Yet, that hasn’t stopped people from taking advantage of the new outdoor dining areas popping up around Pacific Grove. We see locals, eating pizza, talk with passersby, while their dog has laid comfortably under their table. These little gather-ing places have added a big dose of atmosphere to the Historic Down-town and Central Avenue business districts.

The individuality of each business also shines through in the design of their outdoor spaces. While Faval-oro’s gated patio invokes visions of the little cafes on the Italian Riviera, Happy Girl Kitchen’s new parklet is an expression of their environ-mental responsibility and all-natural sensibilities.

“The new outdoor space has at-tracted people to the restaurant. In fact, for a visitor, it may be the first reason the decision is made to eat here,” confirms Marie Favaloro, one of the first to be invited by the city to explore this concept with her restaurant Favoloro’s Big Night Bistro, “Both locals and visitors

enjoy the interaction with the street activity and weather doesn’t seem to discourage them. I’m very pleased the city has moved forward to make our downtown area more commu-nity friendly.”

It’s all about the community. Todd & Jordan Champagne, owners of Happy Girl Kitchen say, “It’s all about the community.” In fact, their parklet (made entirely of recycled materials) was paid for by dona-tions from the community through a brilliant KickStarter campaign, and bares the names of the contributors on its walls.

As of this writing, we have spotted a half-dozen businesses taking ad-vantage of this new opportunity and “dressing up” their entry ways with these inviting gathering places.

With low impact, safety measured designs, these additions will pro-vide a “welcome mat” inviting us back out into the community to communicate with our neighbors and remind ourselves of how very special our little town is.

Butch Adams of Kailee Creamery, makes organic ice cream in the American Tin Cannery with flavors like Ginger Honey, Lemon Pie, and his Famous Caramel. He also serves a mean root beer float (made with Sparky’s Root Beer).

Joe Rombi now has his famous sauces and sides from la piccola casa available for home kitchens.

Red House Cafe Chef, Chris D’Amelio has a real hit on his plate with his Signature Oatmeal-Apricot-Pecan Cookies, which are beautifully packaged for gift giving.

Shop local— It just tastes better!

Pacific Grove is a collector’s gold mine full of thrift stores, consign-ment stores and antique shops. It is a certain fascination for me to lurk around the thrift stores for sources of inspiration that can be found among the hidden treasures. Naturally, when an additional thrift store opened up on the corner of Eardley and Central Avenues, I went to take a look. At Second Chance, I quickly got acquainted with the team running the store, who I learned are all a part of a rehabilitation program. They were a solid group of men from various age groups (recently a female program has joined the team). I liked their bright spirits and the conversations we had. One would always ask me questions about ancient Egypt—“What source of light do you think the Pharos used to paint their un-derground-dark corridor ceilings?”Although I’m Egyptian I probably don’t know as much as he does sim-ply from watching documentaries! These shopping experiences were so enjoyable that I was encouraged to commit one day a week to volunteer-ing at the store.

At the time I didn’t have a job, and I looked forward to my Fridays at Second Chance. Once I found a job I had to give up my volunteer schedule at the store, but I continue to pop in every so often to see my old friends and check out the merchandise. Once in a while, I get a chance to converse with the team and learn a little about their lives. I like it when I bump into them in different parts of the city and discover that they have graduated from the program and found opportunities elsewhere. Second Chance Thrift Store, part of The Bridge Ministry, takes donated merchandise and restores it to useful-ness in the hands of its new owner. The staff is made up of volunteers, employ-ees, and Bridge residents.

The Bridge Restoration Ministry Recov-ery Program is a 12-month residence program designed to help men and women with substance abuse problems.

Writer, John Ehab has worked as a journalist reporting from Cairo, Beirut, Gaza, Syria and Sudan over the last ten years. John and his family moved to Pacific Grove in 2012.

Made in Pacific GroveIn the age of sustainability, when we’re all watch-ing our food miles and trying to eat local, we want to remind you of these delicious choices:

Sparky’s Root Beer was created in the garage of Kevin Knox’s Pacific Grove home back in 2000 and can now be found in grocery stores and restaurants across the country. We love the fact it says Pacific Grove right on the bottle!

PACIFIC GROVE

Page 63: Discover 2014bss
