A Theology of Kids

A blessing & gift from God-

Ps 127:3-4

Precious for they are God’s image- Ge 1:27

Full of potential

Able to learn- Dt 6:4-6

Trusting & vulnerable-

Easily believe in God and His existence

Capable of understanding spiritual truth- Ps 78:1-8

Need instruction & guidance- Pr 13:1, Pr 29:15, Eph 6:4, Col 3:20

Need discipline & correction- Pr 3:11-12, Pr 22:15, Pr 29:15, 17

Live what they see modeled for them- Dt 6:6-8

Are born with a sin nature-Ro 5:18, Jer 17:9

God uses children to accomplish His purposes

Jesus’ Perspective on Kids

Welcomed them as they came to Him -Mt 19:13-15; Lu 18:15-17

Laid hands on & blessed them

Many of Jesus’ miracles involved children

Used children as object lessons to illustrate spiritual truths

Children were in the crowds where Jesus taught

Jesus had harsh words for people that led children astray

Mt 18:5-6; Mk 9:42-48

Jesus rebuked the disciples for keeping kids from Him

Mt 19:13; Mk 10:13-16

We welcome Jesus when we welcome children-

Mk 9:33-37, 42

Jesus accepted the praise of children! Mt 21:12-17

Summer 2013

-The names of God

-Made ID cards, chose spy agent names, put clues in mystery code in the bulletins for solving

-Big prize: detective books or books on the names of God

Summer 2014

-Looking at Genesis 1-2

-Archaeology theme

-Sunday mornings are lessons in foundations= Truths from Ge 1-2 that are foundational to our lives as believers

-Out big prize will be an archaeology kit

Weekly Structure for D4Y

1. Welcome & opening prayer

2. Review of workbooks, saying memory verses etc-

3. We give points/ prizes for bringing Bibles and workbooks, memorizing verses and completing their homework for the week.

4. Review of the key concepts from the week of homework.

5. Depending on the time, I may start to work on the next day’s homework with the kids.

6. Rewarding kids for their hard work in completing the work books.

Strengths of D4Y

1. We are in the Word;

Weaknesses of D4Y

1. Assumes an ability to read.

2. Would not work as a weekly SS curriculum

3. May be challenging to find a teacher if they are not familiar with inductive Bible study.

4. Some people would say that having homework is a weakness

5. Can be a challenge to convince parents to help their kids in doing their homework-

6. Lack of teacher resources.

7. The weekly meetings are a struggle for kids who attend inconsistently.

“I like that we can learn about God and about Paul & Timothy. I like that you can do lots of activities in the book, and you can draw and there’s even a mini Bible in the back and there are answers in the back. (don’t cheat! Look only because it’s too hard for you!)”
